(06/210) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 16, 2020 that, 2 militants died in an air operation of Turkish Armed Forces to Avasin region of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on June 4, 2020.

(06/211) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 16, 2020 that, petitions of prisoners addressing Ministry of Justice, Presidency and right defender organisations about right violations they were subjected to in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison were not sent by prison administration. It is also stated in the news reports that prisoners were not given cleaning supplies despite of Covid-19 pandemic and cleaning supplies were sold at high prices in prison commissary.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 16, 2020 that, disciplinary proceedings are initiated against F. A., a prisoner in Istanbul Silivri L Type Prison No 7, for the letter about right violations that he wrote addressing Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Kocaeli MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu.

(06/212) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1316 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on June 16, 2020 at 13.30 and 18.00 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(06/213) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Düzce…

On June 16, 2020, the police intervened the press declaration of Alev Şahin in order to regain her job from which she was dismissed by a state of emergency decree, in front of Düzce Governorate and detained her. Alev Şahin was released on the same day.

(06/214) Police Intervention to a Protest in Hatay…

The police intervened the press declaration at Abdullah Cömert Park in Samandağ district of Hatay on June 15, 2020, about Edibe Özçelik who had a heart attack when her house was raided by the police in Samandağ district of Hatay and who died on January 20, 2020; and detained 1 person (Ümit Özçelik) by using physical violence. Detained person was released on the same day.

The police intervened the press declaration on June 16, 200 at the same place for the same reason, and detained 3 people (Ümit Özçelik and 2 more people) by using physical violence. Detained people were released on the same day.

(06/215) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Ankara…

On June 16, 2020, Ankara Directorate of Security made a declaration on police intervention to the protest on June 15, 2020 in front of Justice and Development Party (AKP) headquarters in Ankara, of people who were injured during July 15 coup attempt, claiming that the donations collected for them did not reach them and they did not get what they have been promised. It is stated in the declaration that there was no physical intervention to the group and nobody was detained.

One of the protestors, U. Y., has a statement covered by news reports and claims that 2 people have rib fractures because of the intervention.

Voice of America reporter Arif Aslan is detained on June 16, 2020 in Van, on the grounds of a court sentence. Arif Aslan is arrested by the court on the same day.

(06/217) Detained People in Adana…

5 of 7 people who were detained on June 14, 2020, on the grounds of participating in ‘illegal demonstrations in Adana between 2011 and 2014’; are arrested by the court on June 16, 2020. 2 people are released on judicial control conditions. 7 people have been arrested for the same reason previously while 3 people have been released on judicial control conditions. It is learned from the news coverage that arrested people were children at the time of aforesaid demonstrations.

5 people who were detained in Mersin on June 13, 2020; are released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on June 16, 2020.

(06/219) Detained BDSP Members in Kocaeli…

On June 16, 2020, 4 people (Vural Uzal, Zeynel Kızılarslan, Elif Alçınkaya and Sabit Yıldırım) are detained in house raids in Kocaeli, through an investigation against Independent Revolutionary Class Platform (BDSP).

(06/220) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The case against co-executive editors Eren Keskin and Hüseyin Aykol, and managing editor Reyhan Çapan and journalist Hasan Başak, from Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 is held on June 16, 2020. The court adjourned the trial to October 1, 2020.

(06/221) TUHAY-DER Member on Trial…

The first trial of the case against Selma Altan (71), founder member of Aegean Association of Families of Prisoners (EGE TUHAY-DER) is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26 on June 16, 2020.

Selma Altan joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court released Selma Altan on judicial control conditions and adjourned the trial.

Selma Altan was arrested on November 16, 2019.

(06/222) Kemal Kurkut Case…

The trial of the case at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 7, against police officer Y. Ş., for killing university student Kemal Kurkut by shooting him behind his back during Newroz celebrations in Diyarbakır in 2017, is held on June 16, 2020. Police officer Y. Ş. is charged with ‘killing on probable intention’ and the indictment demands life imprisonment for this charge.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded jail sentence from 3 years up to 9 years for the police officer, on the charge of ‘killing with conscious negligence’. The court adjourned the trial to September 22, 2020.

(06/223) Ban of Events in Mersin…

Mersin Governorate made a declaration on June 16, 2020 and banned all open-door events except for press declarations in political party offices with less than 50 people; and entrance of supporters of these events into the city and exit of people to support events in other cities apart from parliamentary members are restricted for 15 days as of June 16, 2020, according to Provincial Health and Hygiene Board decision.

(06/224) Ban of Access to a Website…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 16, 2020 that, access to www.ozguruzbiz20.org website and to Ozguruz Radio which broadcasts on this website is banned by court verdict upon Supreme Board of Radio and Television (RTUK) demand.

(06/225) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On June 16, 2020, 138 people including military members on active duty are detained in operations covering 56 cities through an Izmir based investigation; 44 people including military members on active duty are detained in operations covering 35 cities through an Istanbul based investigation; and 13 people are detained through an Ankara based investigation.

It is learned that detention warrants are issued for 30 people including military members on active duty and retired members, and that operations are initiated in 16 cities.

2 of 21 people including former police officers dismissed by state of emergency decrees, who were detained through a Balıkesir based investigation are arrested by the court on June 15, 2020. 19 people are released on judicial control conditions.

(06/226) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 17 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,467 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on June 16, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 4,842 and total number of confirmed cases is 181,298 as of June 16, 2020.
