(02/138) Earthquakes in Antep and Maraş…

According to the information recorded by Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, on February 6, 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 in Şehitkamil district of Antep which struck at 04:17 local time and an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 in Ekinözü district of Maraş which struck at 13:24 local time killed at least 38,044 people and injured 108,068 people in Adana, Adıyaman, Antep, Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Maraş, Osmaniye, Urfa provinces as of February 17, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 16, 2023 that the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) announced that 6,100 Syrian refugees died in the earthquakes in Antep and Maraş, and the bodies of 1,745 were sent to Syria.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 17, 2023 that, FOX TV channel reporter who wanted to ask questions to the mayor in Maraş was prevented by the guards of the mayor.

The Future Party chair Ahmet Davutoğlu stated on February 17, 2023 that, 100 trucks sent to the earthquake region by his party were seized.

(02/141) Investigation Against Revolutionary Party Executive…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 16, 2023 that, an investigation was launched against the Revolutionary Party deputy chair Gamze Taşçı who has lost her relatives in the earthquakes. It is learned that the investigation was about her statements to the press and social media posts about the rescue activities in the earthquake region, and that the police went to her home through the investigation.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 17, 2023 that, a prisoner named Serhat Aksu who was transferred from Urfa Siverek T Type Prison to Ankara Sincan High Security Prison No. 1 was being kept in solitary cell and the stuff sent to him by his family was not given.

It is learned that the appeal made on February 16, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(02/144) Detained HDP Executive and Other People in Hakkari…

3 people who were detained in house raids in Şemdinli district of Hakkari, on the grounds of social media posts on February 15, 2023 are released by the court on judicial control conditions on February 16, 2023. Detained people were: The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Şemdinli district former co-chair Cabbar Taş, Habil Aloğlu and Ergin Avcı.

The trial of the case against journalist Sultan Eylem Keleş, who was detained as she was reporting on the protest of BIMEKS workers on September 17, 2022, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 56 on February 16, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Sultan Eylem Keleş on the charge of ‘insulting the police’. It is learned that two police officers heard as the complainants at the trial stated that they have no complaints. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to May 23, 2023.

(02/146) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against co-executive editors Eren Keskin and Hüseyin Aykol and managing editor Reyhan Çapan and journalist Hasan Başak from Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 13 on February 16, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to May 2, 2023.

(02/147) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against 57 people who were detained by the police intervening in the press declaration held in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on October 26, 2022, to protest detention of the Turkish Medical Association chair Şebnem Korur Fincancı and 11 journalists in Ankara; is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No. 15 on February 15, 2023. The court acquitted 57 people.

(02/148) People on Trial in Eskişehir…

The first trial of the case against 8 people who were detained by the police intervening in the Pride March in Eskişehir on July 3, 2022, is held at Eskişehir Penal Court of First Instance No. 4 on February 16, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 8 people on the charge of violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations. The court adjourned the trial to June 8, 2023.

(02/149) Person on Trial in Ankara for Social Media Posts…

The final trial of the case against a person named Fahriye Malatyalı, 70, for a social media post about the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chair, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 23 on February 17, 2023. The court sentenced Fahriye Malatyalı to a penalty fine of 8,840 Turkish Liras and deferred the announcement of the verdict.
