The Ministry of National Defence declared that 3 soldiers (Can Softa, Yılmaz Tuncer, Cengizhan Kaplan) died and 2 soldiers got wounded in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on August 15, 2021.
It is learned from the news coverage of August 16, 2021 that, 2 YBŞ militants died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces units and militants in Sincar area of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) declared that the flood hitting several provinces in Western Black Sea region on August 11, 2021 killed 77 people as of August 17, 2021. The number of deceased people is 62 in Kastamonu, 14 in Sinop and 1 in Bartın.
(08/152) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Istanbul…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 16, 2021 that, 3 people in Sancaktepe district of Istanbul who have been forcibly taken into an armoured police vehicle without any warrant, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment and were forced to be police informants on August 13, 2021.
One of these people stated the following to the press: “I went to Sancaktepe with 2 friends. An armoured police vehicle stopped us and asked for identity cards, at around 11 p.m. We were forcibly put in the vehicle before the identity control was done. We were forced to face down on the ground in the vehicle. And we were subjected to insults and curses at that moment. We were beaten with clubs and kicks. The vehicle then went into a forestland in Sarıgazi. We were tormented there too. After that, they forced us to be police informants as a so-called ‘tea offer’. They kept us waiting in the car for 25 minutes in the forestland, and then we were released.”

It is learned that the appeal made on August 16, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was not responded.

The police intervened the sit-in protest in Bakırköy Square of Istanbul on August 16, 2021, organized by public employees to demand their jobs back from which they had been dismissed by state of emergency decrees, and detained 1 person (Nursel Tanrıverdi). Nursel Tanrıverdi is released after statement procedures on the same day.

28 people who have been detained in house raids in Adana on August 13, 2021 are released by the court on August 16, 2021, provided that 18 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

5 people who have been detained in Silopi district of Şırnak on August 14, 2021 are released by the court on judicial control conditions on August 16, 2021.

On August 13, 2021, 15 people have been detained for social media posts, in house raids in Van. 3 of them (Ferhat Azan, Çetin Temel and Rojin Varhan) are arrested by the court while 12 people are released on judicial control conditions on August 16, 2021.

7 people including the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Kozluk district co-chair Berjin Altan and Kozluk district council member İmadeddin Dinler who have been detained in house raids in Batman on August 15, 2021, are released by the court on judicial control conditions on August 16, 2021.

6 people including HDP Derik district co-chair Selma Özcan and Assyrian Union Association chair Yuhanna Aktaş who have been detained in house raids in Kızıltepe, Midyat, Derik, Mazıdağı and Ömerli districts of Mardin on August 15, 2021; are released by the coırt on judicial control conditions on August 16, 2021. Assyrian Women’s Association chair Teodora Özdemir Hobel who has been detained through the same investigation was released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on August 15, 2021.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 16, 2021 that, HDP demanded 30 days of additional time from the Court of Cassation, to examine the case file and digital data through the closure case.

On August 16, 2021, 7 people are detained in Edirne an alleged attempt to illegally cross to Greece.

The Ministry of Health declared that 165 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 18,163 as of August 16, 2021.
The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 53,322 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 6,096,816 as of August 16, 2021.
