It is learned from the news coverage of April 16, 2024, that 1 person was subjected to physical violence by the police during police intervention in a fight between two groups in the Izmit district of Kocaeli. The Governorate of Kocaeli announced on April 16, 2024, that a judicial and administrative investigation is initiated and 3 police officers are suspended from duty.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 17, 2024, that Sedanur Uğur and Sibel Örkmez, two prisoners in Izmir Şakran Prison were threatened by correction officers saying “If you stay with political prisoners, you will never get out of there. If you make a scene, we will give you to the rapists”.

On April 16, 2024, gendarmerie intervened against the strike of factory workers in the Kemalpaşa district of Izmir, which started on March 7, 2024, on the grounds of not getting their rights at the factory where they work, and detained 18 people including Öz Gıda-İş Organizing Department Head Göksel Şengün, Organizing Expert Hüseyin Zorlu and Administrative Affairs Manager Tufan Acar. It is learned that 8 workers were injured due to the intervention.

5 of 6 people (Mizgin Dağ, Serhat Sarı, Abdulmenav Karataş, Muhammet Mert, Uğur Elban) who were arrested on March 19, 2024, on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ after the Newroz rally held in Gündoğdu Square in Izmir, were released by the court after the arrest review.
6 of 36 people who were detained on March 17, 2024, during the Newroz rally in Gündoğdu Square in Izmir and in house raids on March 18, 2024, were arrested on March 19, 2024, on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. 30 people were released on judicial control conditions.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 17, 2024, that the appeal made to Urfa Administrative Court No 2 for annulment of the ban on the play “Bêrû” staged by theatre group Teatra Jiyana Nû, which was banned indefinitely in Urfa in 2020 by the Governorate of Urfa, was rejected by the court on the grounds of ‘threat to the unity and integrity of the state’, and Gaziantep Regional Administrative Court Administrative Case Department No 4 lifted the ban, ruling that the ban was against freedom of expression and thought.

Ahmet Karatay, Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Ağrı Diyadin District Co-Chair was detained in a house raid on April 17, 2024, through an investigation conducted by Ağrı Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and was taken to Ağrı Provincial Security Directorate. The reason for the detention could not be learned.

The final trial of the case against Leyla Güven, former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MP and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair, for a speech she made in 2016, was held at Batman Penal Court of First Instance No 4 on April 16, 2024. The court acquitted Leyla Güven on the charge of ‘inciting hatred and hostility among the public’ and sentenced her to 5 months on the charge of ‘publicly degrading the Turkish nation, state, parliament, government, and judicial bodies’.

The retrial of journalist Geşbun Ayşe Kara, on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’, was held on April 16, 2024, after the acquittal verdict of Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on November 9, 2021, was reversed by Penal Department No 2 of Diyarbakır Regional Court of Appeals. The court adjourned the trial to July 16, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 17, 2024, that in Bursa, Kilis, and Konak district of Izmir, workplaces with Arabic signboards were inspected upon the instruction of mayors, and Arabic signboards were removed by local police officers.

The Governorate of Şırnak announced on April 16, 2024, that Altındağları Region in Beytüşşebap District of Şırnak Province was declared as a temporary special security zone for 15 days from April 17, 2024, to May 1, 2024 and access to the region was banned.
The Governorate of Hakkari announced on April 17, 2024, that areas in Kuş, Kuştiyan, and Belkız rural areas of the Central District of Hakkari Province have been declared as temporary special security zones for 5 days between April 17, 2024, and April 21, 2024.
