It is learned from the news coverage of April 16, 2020 that 3 HPG militants died in the air operation of Turkish Armed Forces to Qandil area of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on April 15, 2020.

(04/120) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 16, 2020 that prisoners in Maraş Türkoğlu L Type Prison No 1 were not given cleaning supplies, disinfectants and face masks to be protected from Covid-19 pandemic. It is also stated in the news reports that prisoners were subjected to physical violence of the wardens during roll-calls.

(04/121) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1255 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on April 16, 2020 at 13.30, and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

Ministry of Interior declared on April 16, 2020 that within last month 5603 social media accounts have been investigated for social media posts about Covid-19 pandemic, and 303 of 765 people related to these accounts are detained.

(04/123) Co-Mayor on Trial…

The trial of the case against Cemal Özdemir, HDP co-mayor of Sur district of Diyarbakır, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 on April 16, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for Cemal Özdemir on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, ‘possession of hazardous substances without permission’ and ‘selling, purchasing, carrying and owning weapons and/or bullets which are severe in terms of quality’.

After defence hearings the court decided to release Cemal Özdemir and adjourned the trial to July 7, 2020.

Cemal Özdemir was detained on December 20, 2019 and was arrested on December 23, 2019. Ministry of Interior appointed Sur district sub-governor Abdullah Çiftçi as a trustee to Sur Municipality on December 22, 2019.

(04/124) Request for Release of Journalists…

It is learned that on April 16, 2020, Istanbul Penal Court of Peace rejected the request for release of arrested journalists Mehmet Ferhat Çelik (managing editor of Yeni Yaşam newspaper), Aydın Keser (executive editor of Yeni Yaşam newspaper), Murat Ağırel (Yeniçağ newspaper writer), Barış Pehlivan (managing editor of Oda TV), Barış Terkoğlu (chief news editor of Oda TV) and reporter Hülya Kılınç, as per the law on criminal enforcement that has been accepted by Grand National Assembly and entered into force as of April 14, 2020.

It is stated in the court order that “release requests are separately rejected on the grounds that when taken together with the current state of evidence in the file, the quality and nature of the offense charged, records of statement, the sentence foreseen by the law and the file in its entirety, the measure of arrest has been found moderate, there is no matter that necessitates their release and their reasons for objection are not proper.”

(04/125) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) declared on April 17, 2020 that between March 11, 2020 and April 10, 2020, at least 855 workers form 159 workplaces tested positive for Covid-19 and at least 52 workers died due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Ministry of Health declared that 125 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 4,801 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on April 16, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 1,643 and total number of confirmed cases is 74,193 as of April 16, 2020.
