(05/117) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

According to news reports published on May 15, 2025, it was learned that Çetin Tutkun, a prisoner taransferred from Tekirdağ F Type High Security Prison to Çorlu Kartepe High Security Closed Prison on May 9, 2025, was subjected to physical violence by prison guards on the grounds that he objected to being strip-searched upon entering the prison. The report also stated that no medical report documenting the torture and other ill-treatment suffered by Çetin Tutkun at the hospital where he was transferred was provided.

(05/118) Trial of a Journalist in Diyarbakır…

The trial of İsmail Çoban, former editor-in-chief of the Kurdish-language newspaper Azadiya Welat, which was closed by a decree law, continued on May 15, 2025, at the Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 5. The indictment seeks the journalist’s punishment for “membership in an organization,” “propaganda for an organization,” and “violation of the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911.” The court postponed the hearing until September 30, 2025.

The trial of Dilara Su, a member of the General Assembly of the Socialist Women’s Assemblies (SKM), continued on May 15, 2025, at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 26. The indictment seeks Dilara Su’s punishment for “being a member of an organization.” The court decided to release Dilara Su and postponed the hearing to October 14, 2025.

Dilara Su was arrested on January 24, 2025.

(05/120) TTB Executive Dismissed from Public Service…

According to news reports on May 15, 2025, Dr. Ayşe Uğurlu, a member of the Executive Board of the Human Rights Committee of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB), was dismissed from her civil service position as part of a disciplinary investigation into allegations that she had insulted the President in a statement read at a press conference she attended.

(05/121) TV Channels Penalized by the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK)…

According to news reports on May 15, 2025, the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) imposed separate administrative fines on SZC TV and Halk TV channels for news reports related to a physical attack on the General Chairman of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), and on Tele 1 channel for statements made during the “Journalists’ Table” program.

(05/122) Individuals Detained Across Turkey…

The Ministry of Interior announced that 101 individuals were detained in operations conducted in 27 provinces on May 16, 2025, on charges of “participating in the current structure of the organization,” “providing financial support to the organization,” and “conducting propaganda for the organization.”
