The Ministry of National Defence announced that 1 soldier (Kadir Kemik) died in an attack on June 16, 2022, during the Claw-Lock military operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government.

(06/188) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 16, 2022 that, the prisoners who did not accept the imposition of remorse in İzmir Şakran Women’s Prison were subjected to torture and other ill-treatment and were threatened with death by saying, “Why shouldn’t the state kill you?”. The mother of Esma Ayaz, one of the prisoners, stated the following in her statements in the press: “They were forced to remorse. Then, one by one, they were subjected to strip search in solitary cells. They were handcuffed and tortured for hours.”

It is learned that the appeal made on June 16, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on June 15, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Ankara on June 15, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(06/192) Detained Journalists and Other Person in Diyarbakır…

22 people including 21 journalists who were detained in Diyarbakır on June 8, 2022, were referred to the court on June 15, 2022. The court ruled to arrest 16 people and to release 6 people on judicial control conditions.

Arrested journalists are: Mezopotamya News Agency editor Aziz Oruç, Jinnews editor Safiye Alagaş, Dicle Fırat Journalists’ Association (DFGD) co-chair Serdar Altan, Xwebün newspaper editor in chief Mehmet Ali Ertaş, Ömer Çelik, Neşe Toprak, Mehmet Şahin, Zeynel Abidin Bulut, Elif Üngör, Remziye Temel, Suat Doğuhan, Lezgin Akdeniz, İbrahim Koyuncu, Abdurrahman Öncü, Ramazan Geciken and Mazlum Güler.

People released on judicial control conditions: Journalists Gülşen Koçuk, Kadir Bayram, Mehmet Yalçın, Esmer Tunç, Feynaz Koçuk and İhsan Ergünlü.

(06/193) Detained HDP Executives and Members in Istanbul…

On June 16, 2022, 12 people including members and executives of HDP are detained in house raids in Istanbul; on the grounds of the demonstration in Kadıköy district of Istanbul held on June 12, 2022 as a part of the “Gemlik March” about isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Detained people are: HDP organisation co-spokesperson Besra İşsever, HDP executives Bayram Aktimur and Erkan Tarım, HDP Üsküdar district co-chair Aysel Özbey, Mümin Odabaş, Harun Bağatur, Enes Özdaş, Ercan Özer, Saliha Aras, Adalet Aktimur, Ahmet Tato and Gülbahar Baran.

Journalist İnci Hekimoğlu is detained on the grounds of social media posts, in Izmir on June 16, 2022.

(06/195) Detained People in Istanbul…

It is learned that 10 people who were detained for wearing yellow, red and green coloured scarfs during a wedding ceremony in Esenyurt district of Istanbul, are arrested by the court on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ on June 15, 2022. 10 people have been arrested through the investigation.

Arrested people are: Cahit Karçık, Şefik Karçık, Tahsin Karçık, Mesut Karçık, Savaş Karçık, Aydın Kaplan, İbrahim Kaplan, Umut Kaplan, İbrahim Baran and Burhan Topçu.

(06/196) Detained People Through Balıkesir Based Investigation…

It is learned that 27 poeple are detained on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘financing an illegal organisation’, in operations covering 12 cities through a Balıkesir based investigation on June 15, 2022.

(06/197) Detained People in Van…

It is learned that 2 people were detained in Van on the grounds that they were wearing a t-shirt with the picture of the former co-chair of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Selahattin Demirtaş. It is also stated in the news reports that 6 people were also detained on the grounds that they reacted to the detention of these 2 people.

(06/198) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against journalist İsmail Saymaz, for his expressions in a television programme, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 35 on June 15, 2022. The court sentenced İsmail Saymaz to a penalty fine of 3,480 Turkish Liras.

(06/199) Journalist on Trial in Erzurum…

The final trial of the case against Mehmet Arslan, a reporter of Dicle News Agency which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Erzurum Heavy Penal Court No 3 on June 16, 2022. The court sentenced Mehmet Arslan to 1 year and 6 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

(06/200) Academics Dismissed in Ankara…

It is learned that the Middle East Technical University (METU) Rectorate dismissed Sibel Bekiroğlu, a research assistant at the Department of Sociology, and Mehmet Mutlu, a research assistant at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, on 15 June 2022, without giving any reason.

(06/201) Proposal to Amend the Press Law…

The Draft Law Amending the Press Law and Some Laws was accepted by the Justice Committee of the Grand National Assembly on June 15, 2022. The bill proposes that those who “disseminate false information publicly in a way that may disturb the public peace” will be punished with imprisonment from one year to three years, internet news sites are also included in the scope of periodicals, and the declarations for broadcast ban decisions are submitted to the Press Announcement Agency instead of the Chief Public Prosecutor Offices. It is also stated in the bill that the Press Advertisement Agency would apply to the court “to determine that it does not qualify as a news website” about the websites that do not comply with the publication bans, in case the application to the court is accepted, official announcements rights and press card rights for employees of these websites will be revoked. In addition, the press cards will be issued by a 9-member commission, 2 of which represents the Directorate of Communications, and will be given in five types as duty-bound, temporary, temporary, free and permanent. It is also proposed in the amendment in question, press cards will be given to applicants on the condition that “they have not been convicted of crimes against national defence, crimes against state secrets, espionage crimes and terrorism crimes”.
