On February 15, 2024, Pirha Dersim Reporter Nuray Atmaca, who was detained at Tuncel Provincial Security Directorate where she was called to give her statement, was released the same day after statement procedures.

The final hearing of the case against journalist Zafer Arapkirli, upon the complaint of former Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu and Gendarmerie General Commander Arif Çetin, for a social media post he made, was held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 21 on February 15, 2024. After the defenses, the court sentenced Zafer Arapkirli to a fine of 8,840 TL.

The trial of the case against journalist Bülent Kılıç, who was detained by physical violence and handcuffed behind his back while he was following the ‘Pride March’ in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on June 26, 2021; was held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 19 on February 15, 2024.
The indictment demands Bülent Kılıç be sentenced for ‘resisting to prevent the execution of duty’ and ‘publicly insulting a public officer because of their duty’.
It is learned that an expert report stating that Bülent Kılıç was subjected to torture and ill-treatment during detention was submitted to the court. After defenses and witness statements, the court adjourned the trial to September 19, 2024.

The first trial of the case against journalist Selahattin Kaygusuz started on February 15, 2024, at Batman Heavy Penal Court No 2. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. After defenses, the court released Selahattin Kaygusuz and adjourned the trial to a later date.

It is learned that the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against Artı TV presenter Şükran Ekinci on the grounds of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ for her social media post about the landslide in the gold mine in İliç district of Erzincan, where 9 workers were reported to be trapped, and that the journalist gave her official statement to the prosecutor’s office on February 15, 2024.
(02/161) Lawyer on Trial in Diyarbakır…
The first trial of the case against lawyer Süleyman Şahin started on February 15, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5.
The indictment demands a sentence for Süleyman Şahin on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.
During the hearing, defense lawyers demanded a stay of proceedings on the grounds of obtaining permission from the Ministry of Justice for the trial. The court did not rule on this request and decided to hear the defenses. After defenses, the court decided to continue judicial control condition and ban on leaving the country for Süleyman Şahin and adjourned the trial to May 21, 2024.

The first trial of the case against Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Party Assembly (PM) member Ali Gültepe, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) member Cüneyt Yeşilyurt, HDP Ereğli district co-chair Rıdvan Ulaşman and HDP Çerkezköy executive Niyazi Artu, started on February 15, 2024 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 25.
The indictment demands a sentence for 4 people on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.
4 people attended the hearing via SEGBİS and made their defenses. After defenses, the court released 4 people on judicial control condition and adjourned the trial to May 7, 2024.
Ali Gültepe, Cüneyt Yeşilyurt, Rıdvan Ulaşman, and Niyazi Artu were detained through an Istanbul-based investigation on October 23, 2023, and were arrested by the criminal peace judgeship on October 25, 2023.

The Governorate of Sivas announced on February 14, 2024, that following the landslide in the gold mine in the İliç district of Erzincan, where 9 workers were trapped, the people who are considered to be going to Erzincan to organize protests and events related to the incident are banned from leaving Sivas for 7 days until February 20, 2024.
