(02/130) Earthquakes in Antep and Maraş…

According to the information recorded by Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, on February 6, 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 in Şehitkamil district of Antep which struck at 04:17 local time and an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 in Ekinözü district of Maraş which struck at 13:24 local time killed at least 36,187 people and injured 106,068 people in Adana, Adıyaman, Antep, Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Maraş, Osmaniye, Urfa provinces as of February 16, 2023.

It is learned that the vehicle of Tele1 TV channel reporter Hazal Güven and cameraman Umutcan Yitik was stopped by unidentified persons in Armutlu district of Hatay on February 15, 2023. It is reported that the journalists could get away from the area without any injuries.

(02/132) Prevention of Relief Activities in Earthquake Region…

It is learned that the police detained 10 members of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) at the solidarity center in Osmaniye on February 15, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 15, 2023 that, the truck carrying the relief materials collected by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) to Nurdağı district of Antep was seized by the AFAD teams at the entrance of city.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 15, 2023 that, the warehouse containing the relief materials collected by HDP and labour and professional organizations in Hasankoca Neighbourhood Solidarity Association in Pazarcık district of Maraş was seized by the decision of the district governor.

(02/133) Prosecutions and Detentions for Social Media Posts…

The General Directorate of Security announced that prosecutions were initiated against 330 people and 110 people were detained, 21 people were arrested for their social media posts about the earthquakes in Antep and Maraş, as of February 16, 2023.

(02/134) Armed Attack on Foundation Members Collecting Earthquake Aid in Istanbul…

It is learned that on February 15, 2023, an armed attack was carried out on a truck carrying relief materials collected for earthquake survivors by the branch of the Şahkulu Sultan Foundation in Pendik district of Istanbul, and 1 person named M. E. was injured as a result of the attack.

Hasan Şahin, chair of Şahkulu Sultan Foundation, stated the following to the press: “They wanted to seize one of the trucks. We understood that there was a situation like extortion. The members here resisted not to give. And fire was opened at that moment and one of our friends was injured. It looks like extortion.”

Istanbul Governorate’s Office, announced that a person named Ö. A. was detained in relation to the attack and was arrested by the court on the same day.

(02/135) Person Arrested for Social Media Posts in Şırnak…

It is learned that a person named Asya Doru, who was detained on the grounds of social media posts about the allegations regarding Maraş Türkoğlu L Type Prison after the earthquake and was later released on judicial control conditions by the court, was arrested on February 15, 2023, upon the objection of the prosecutor’s office.

5 people who were detained on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in Yüksekova district of Hakkari on February 15, 2023 are released on the same day provided that 2 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

(02/137) Lawyer on Trial in Izmir…

The first trial of the case against lawyer Aryen Turan, a member of the Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD) is held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No. 18 on February 16, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Aryen Turan from 2 years and 6 months to 10 years on the charge of ‘knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organisation’, over her expressions regarding the allegations of the use of chemical weapons during the Claw-Lock military operation of the Turkish Armed Forces in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government and for the slogan “Jin jiyan azadi” in her speech at the Bar Association Congress.

The court decided to lift judicial control conditions for Aryen Turan, to reject the intervention demand of the Ministry of National Defence and to send the case to the prosecutor for legal opinion and adjourned the trial to June 7, 2023.

Aryen Turan was detained on November 3, 2022 through the investigation against her and was released by the court with a ban on leaving the country and on judicial control conditions on November 4, 2022.
