It is learned from the news coverage of April 16, 2024, that Adnan Özer, a specialist sergeant was found wounded in a park in the Birecik district of Urfa and died in hospital. It is reported that Adnan Özer committed suicide, many bullet casings were found at the scene and an investigation was initiated.
(04/092) People Subjected to Physical Violence by Gendarmerie in Tekirdağ…
It is learned from the news coverage of April 15, 2024, that during a quarrel in an ambulance between gendarmerie personnel and 112 emergency medical teams responding to a traffic accident in the Hayrabolu district of Tekirdağ on April 12, 2024, gendarmerie personnel inflicted physical violence on E.A.A., a health worker, and on C.U., a health worker whom he met again at Hayrabolu State Hospital on the same day. The Governorate of Tekirdağ announced on its social media account on April 15, 2024, that a disciplinary investigation was initiated and the gendarmerie personnel was suspended.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 15, 2024, that in the Şemdinli district of Hakkari, a minibus carrying people between the city center and villages was stopped by special operations police officers for General Information Search (GBT). It is learned that special operations police officers wanted to body search the passengers in the minibus, threatened the passengers who refused to do so with death and a special operations police officer opened fire randomly with a gun after an argument. It is reported that no one was injured in the incident.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 15, 2024, that some prisoners in Edirne L Type Prison could not find a place to sleep due to overcapacity in some wards and that the wards of some prisoners who complained to the Presidential Communication Center (CIMER) about this situation were changed.

It is learned that the appeal made on April 16, 2024, by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded to by Bursa Public Prosecutor’s Office.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 15, 2024, that following the strike of workers at a factory in the Kemalpaşa district of Izmir starting on March 7, 2024, Denizli Labour Court No 2 decided to make a strike-breaking determination about the recruitment of 483 workers to the factory, lawyers and officials from Kemalpaşa Execution Directorate were prevented by the factory management and gendarmerie intervened with pepper spray, batons and shields to those who reacted to the situation and injured people. It is not known how many people were injured in total.

On April 16, 2024, 6 people including members of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) were detained in house raids in the Gaziosmanpaşa district of Istanbul. The reason for the detention is not known. Names of detained people are Mehmet Sıdık Mertoğlu, Ahmet Korkmaz, Resul Kaytaz, Besim Semerci, Murat Arslan, and Mustafa Kara.

On April 15, 2024, the trial of the case against 36 people including 10 arrestees, for the bombing attack on Istiklal Street in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on November 13, 2022, in which 6 people lost their lives, was held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13. The court adjourned the trial to April 26, 2024.

The trial of the case against journalists Pınar Gayıp, Eylem Nazlıer, Esra Soybir, Serpil Ünal, Serpil Ünal, Yadigar Aygün and Zeynep Kuray, who were detained during the police intervention against the press declaration held on April 29, 2023, in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul to protest detentions and arrests of journalists in Diyarbakır and Ankara based investigations, continued on April 16, 2024, at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 22. The court adjourned the hearing to June 18, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 16, 2024, that an investigation was initiated against journalist Oktay Candemir on the grounds of ‘insulting a public officer’ upon the complaint of Abdulahat Arvas, mayoral candidate of Justice and Development Party (AKP) for Van Metropolitan Municipality in the elections held on March 31, 2024; and that the journalist gave his official statement at Van İpekyolu District Security Directorate.
(04/101) Court of Cassation Decision on the Case of Deniz Poyraz…
It is learned from the news coverage of April 15, 2024, that the appeal of lawyers of Deniz Poyraz’s family against the verdict of Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 6, against Onur Gencer, who committed an armed assault on Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Izmir provincial office on June 17, 2021, and killed Deniz Poyraz, a party worker whom he held hostage, on the grounds of not collecting evidence and not conducting an effective investigation and prosecution, was rejected by Penal Department No 1 of the Supreme Court.
The final hearing of the case against Onur Gencer at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 6 was held on December 27, 2022, and the court sentenced Onur Gencer to aggravated life imprisonment for ‘premeditated intentional killing’ and 9 years of imprisonment for ‘violation of residential inviolability’, ‘damage to property’ and ‘opposition to the law on firearms’. The decision was appealed to the Court of Appeal by the lawyers of Deniz Poyraz’s family, and the lawyers appealed to the Court of Cassation after the 1st Criminal Chamber of Izmir Regional Court of Appeals decided to reject the appeal on October 19, 2023.

According to the news coverage of April 16, 2024, Bolu Mayor Tanju Özcan made a speech at a press conference held at the municipality building about the increase in the number of students at Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University who are not citizens of Turkey, stating the following “We will make an astronomical increase in the bus tickets of the students who have arrived in this way. Apart from that, we are discussing among ourselves what we can do. It is not clear whether they are students or not. It is not clear if they are involved in crime there, it is not clear who they are.”
