(03/137) Refugees Who Lost Their Lives in Çanakkale…

On March 15, 2024, at least 22 refugees, including 5 children, lost their lives when a boat sank off the coast of Eceabat district of Çanakkale.

On March 17, 2024, 50 people were detained while shouting slogans about the violations they experienced during their internship and apprenticeship periods before AKP’s rally in Konya, which was also attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The Governorate of Urfa announced on March 17, 2024, that A. K. lost his life, H. K. and T. D. were wounded in a quarrel between two groups in the Ortakonacık neighborhood of Harran district of Urfa, and the mukhtar of the neighborhood, M. K., A. K. and H. K. were detained in connection with the incident.

(03/139) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 16, 2024, that prisoners on hunger strike demanding an end to the isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue in Samsun Kavak S Type High Security Prison were not provided with vitamins by the prison administration, some prisoners on hunger strike were subjected to physical violence of the correction officers and they were not informed whether their petitions to the Execution Judge and the relevant prosecutor’s office were forwarded or not.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 16, 2024, that Mehdi Boz, an ill prisoner in Elazığ High-Security Prison No 2 was forced to be examined in handcuffs at the hospital where he was transferred.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 16, 2024, that Eren Odabaş, an ill prisoner who was arrested on February 9, 2024, and taken to Marmara (Silivri) Closed Prison, was transferred to Ankara Sincan High-Security Prison No 1 against his will.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 17, 2024, that letters of Feyaz Tahsuk and İslam Erdoğan, prisoners in Antalya S Type Prison, to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) about rights violations in prisons were censored by the prison administration.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 18, 2024, that İsmail Tüzün, a prisoner in Kırşehir High-Security Prison was subjected to physical violence by the correction officers on the grounds of rejecting strip search and mouth search and has been kept in a single room for 10 days.

(03/140) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 16, 2024, that the transfer of Mahmut Başyiğit, an ill prisoner in Aydın E Type Prison, to hospital for his health problems was delayed, and the necessary tests were not performed during the transfer to the hospital emergency room on February 4, 2024. It is learned that the prisoner who was diagnosed with cancer was informed only by his family, that he was not allowed to stay with his family and relatives as a companion after the operation, and that the prisoner’s family was not informed that the prisoner was discharged and taken back to Aydın E Type Prison.

On March 17, 2024, at least 70 people, including 9 children, were detained by the police using physical violence during the police intervention at the Newroz event at the Yenikapı Meeting Area in the Fatih district of Istanbul. It is learned that Bianet reporters Tuğçe Yılmaz and Ali Dinç were prevented from covering the news during the police intervention and were subjected to physical violence while the police tried to detain journalist Aren Yıldırım. It is also learned that some lawyers from the Lawyers’ Association for Freedom (ÖHD) were also prevented from following the detentions and were subjected to physical violence by the police. It is learned that during the event, a group calling themselves Nationalists used phobic and sexist expressions and committed verbal violence against LGBTI+ and women in the area.

It is learned that on March 17, 2024, during Newroz celebrations in the Darıca district of Kocaeli, the police prevented people from wearing yellow, red, and green clothes and confiscated an Amedspor jersey worn by a child.

It is learned that on March 17, 2024, during the Newroz event in the Gündoğdu Square in the Konak district of Izmir, the police prevented yellow, red, and green clothes and items from entering the area, and a group calling themselves Nationalists used phobic and hateful expressions and committed verbal and physical violence against LGBTI+’s in the area.

(03/142) Police Intervention against a Peaceful Demonstration in Bursa…

On March 17, 2024, two people were detained while chanting slogans calling for an end to trade relations with Israel during an event in the Mudanya district for the promotion of the Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) candidate for Bursa. The names of the detainees could not be learned.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 17, 2024, that Dicle Municipality did not permit the mevlit dinner of the DEM Party to be held at Çelebi Yasevi, which belongs to the municipality, in Çelebi neighborhood of Diyarbakır’s Dicle district.

(03/144) People Arrested in Mardin…

3 of 7 people, including 1 child, who were detained through an investigation by the Osmaniye Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on March 15, 2024, on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’, were arrested by the criminal peace judgeship on the same day. The other 4 people were released on judicial control condition. The names of the detained and arrested people could not be learned.

On March 18, 2024, at least 7 people (Ayşegül Ceylan, Yakup Durak, Reşit Umut Çağlı, Agit Şerifoğlu, Ayşe Soysal, Rojhat Karaviş and an unidentified person) were detained in house raids in Şırnak. The reason for the detentions could not be learned.

On March 18, 2024, at least 32 people, including DEM Party Izmir Çiğli Co-Chair Leyla Tufan, were detained in house raids in Izmir. The reason for the detentions could not be learned.

(03/147) People Detained in Batman…

On March 18, 2024, 5 people (Yusuf İslam Demir, Halil Ölmez, Zeynep Aslan, Ayşe Akıncı and Mahsum İnci) were detained in house raids in Batman on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’.

(03/148) People Detained in Istanbul…

10 people, including Tevgera Jinên Azad (TJA) activists, DEM Party Women’s Assembly members, and members of Jineolojî Workshop who were detained in Istanbul on March 12, 2024, were released by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 9 on judicial control conditions on March 15, 2024.

(03/149) Gendarmerie Personnel on Trial in Tokat…

The trial of the case against 2 gendarmerie personnel (Ö. and S. A.) on torture and ill-treatment of Osman Kale continued on March 15, 2024, at Tokat Erbağ Penal Court of First Instance No 1. The indictment demands a sentence for gendarmerie personnel on the charge of ‘intentional injury’. The prosecutor declared his final opinion on the case and demanded the acquittal of the gendarmerie personnel. The court adjourned the trial to April 19, 2024.

(03/150) The Case of the Şenyaşars…

On March 15, 2024, the case against 30 people including 4 arrestees, about the deaths of 4 people, including 3 members of the Şenyaşar family, during and after the incidents in the Suruç district of Urfa on June 14, 2018, when AKP MP Halil İbrahim Yılmaz was visiting shopkeepers, was held on Malatya Heavy Penal Court No 3. The court decided to continue the detention of Fadıl Şenyaşar and other arrested defendants Celal Yıldız, Enver Yıldız, and Mekail Şimşek and adjourned the trial to June 7, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 16, 2024, that 1 content on https://www.sozcu.com.tr related to the Mayor of Hilal town of Uludere district of Şırnak was banned from access by Uludere Criminal Peace Judgeship on March 15, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights.

(03/152) People Detained and Arrested in Relation with the Coup Attempt…

A person with a finalized prison sentence of 6 years and 3 months was arrested in Ankara on 15 March 2024 and sent to prison.
