It is learned from the news coverage of September 15, 2023 that, the tap water in the wards of Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) L Type Prison No. 9 was muddy, and the food given to the prisoners was inadequate and of poor quality.

It is learned that the appeal made on September 15, 2023 to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, in order to visit them was not responded.

The indictment of Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office against the Republican People’s Party (CHP) chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, for a speech he gave in 2014, is accepted by Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 21 on September 14, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu on the charge of ‘publicly degrading a public official’. The first trial will be held on March 7, 2024.

The trial of the case against 8 people including the Health and Social Service Employees’ Union (SES) branch co-chairs Figen Çolakoğlu and Zeki Seven and HRFT physician and Van-Hakkari Medical Chamber secretary Ayfer Bostan, HRFT physician and Van-Hakkari Medical Chamber chair Hüseyin Yaviç, who were detained by the police intervening in the press declaration held on February 8, 2022 in front of Van Research and Training Hospital on February 8, 2022, as a part of one-day-strike of health employees organized by the Turkish Medical Association, is held at Van Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 on September 15, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 8 people on the charge of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 8, 2024.

The trial of the case against 9 people including the Socialist Youth Associations’ Federation (SGDF), the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) and the Socialist Women’s Assembly (SKM) members and executives is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 27 on September 14, 2023. After defence hearings the court decided to release the SGDF co-chairs Yaren Tuncer and Okan Danacı and adjourned the trial to January 16, 2024.

The trial of the case filed against Yavuz Saltık, Head of Local Authority Affairs Department of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 14 on September 14, 2023. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for Yavuz Saltık on the charge of “knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organization”. The court adjourned the trial to September 22, 2023.

The first trial of the case against journalist Mehmet Şah Oruç is held at Bitlis Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on September 14, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of Mehmet Şah Oruç and adjourned the trial to October 31, 2023. Mehmet Şah Oruç was arrested on April 27, 2023.

The trial of the case against Yeniçağ newspaper’s editor-in-chief Erdem Avşar, upon the complaint of Turkuvaz Media Group Vice President of the Executive Board Serhat Albayrak over a news report, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on September 14, 2023. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to January 23, 2024.

The trial of the case against Hüseyin Aykol and Zana Kaya, executive editor İnan Kızılkaya, editor in chief of Özgür Gündem newspaper and politician Hatip Dicle, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 22 on September 14, 2023. The court decided to continue detention warrant for Hatip Dicle and adjourned the trial to January 4, 2024.

The final trial of the case against Yeni Yaşam newspaper employee Rojin Altay is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 22 on September 14, 2023. The court sentenced Rojin Altay to 1 year and 3 months on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

The final trial against Emine Şenyaşar, on the grounds of insulting the Interior Minister in her statements at the “Justice Watch” protests that she holds in front of the Urfa Courthouse, is held at Urfa Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on September 14, 2023. The court sentenced Emine Şenyaşar to a penalty fine of 5,800 Turkish Liras on the charge of ‘insult’. On June 14, 2018, Justice and Development Party Urfa MP candidate İbrahim Halil Yıldız and his personal guards had a quarrel with shopkeepers in Suruç district of Urfa which resulted in death of Emine Şenyaşar’s husband Hacı Esved Şenyaşar and her sons Adil and Celal Şenyaşar.

The indictment of Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor’s Office against 7 members of the organisation committee of the Newroz celebration held in Diyarbakır in 2021 is accepted by Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No. 5. The indictment demands sentence for 7 people on the charge of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The first trial will be held on February 17, 2024.

On October 9, 2009, a 16-month-old baby Mehmet Uytun, has been shot by a gas bomb shell which was used by the security officers intervening a protest, while he was on the balcony of his house in Cizre district of Şırnak. The final trial of the case against specialized sergeant H. A. is held at Cizre Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 on September 14, 2023. The court sentenced the defendant to 3 years to 4 months on the charge of ‘reckless killing’.

The trial of the case against police officer E. G. and bodyguard Y. B. regarding the attack on journalist Sinan Aygül in Tatvan district of Bitlis on June 17, 2023 is held at Tatvan Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on September 14, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 2 people on the charge of ‘intentional injury’. The court decided to release the 2 arrested defendants and adjourned the trial to December 14, 2023.

The trial of the 3 fugitive defendants (Eren Ceylan, Murat Sonkur and Murat Karataş) whose files were separated in the Sivas Massacre case is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 1 on September 14, 2023. The court decided to dismiss the case on the grounds of statute of limitations.

Şırnak Governorate’s Office made a declaration on September 14, 2023 and banned the entrance to and exit from 5 zones in Güçlükonak district between 15-29 September 2023.

On September 15, 2023, 20 people were detained in Edirne an alleged attempt to illegally flee abroad.
