It is learned that the number of refugees who died due to the sinking of a rubber boat carrying refugees off the Çeşme district of Izmir is 6 as of November 13, 2023, and 1 refugee is still missing.

It is learned from the news coverage of November 15, 2023, that Sedat Yamuktu, a prisoner in Urfa T Type Prison, lost his life in hospital for dental treatment on November 7, 2023.

It is learned that the appeal made on November 14, 2023, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of the PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, to visit him was not responded to.
(11/127) Armed Attack on a Journalist’s Car in Bursa…
It is learned that an anonymous person or persons organized an armed attack on Başka Gazete Editor-in-Chief Yaman Kaya’s car in Bursa on November 13, 2023. Yaman Kaya was not injured and the attack caused material damage to the vehicle.
(11/128) Person Subjected to Physical Violence by the Police in Urfa…
It is learned that on November 14, 2023, in the Eyyübiye district of Urfa, Aziz Beyaztaş and Dilber Beyaztaş were subjected to physical violence by a police officer with whom they had a quarrel, and Aziz Beyaztaş was injured after being hit on his head with a gun handle. It is also reported that the police officer threatened 2 people, saying, “I will skin you.” It is learned that 2 people who were subjected to physical violence by the police officer were detained on the charges of ‘degrading the Turkish Nation, the state of the Republic of Turkey, the bodies and institutions of the state’ and ‘resisting to prevent public duty.’ Urfa Governorate declared that an administrative investigation was initiated against the police officer.
(11/129) Journalists on Trial in Diyarbakır…
The trial of the case against the United States of America (USA) Vice News reporter Jacob Philip John Gingell Hanrahan, cameraman Philip John Pendlebury, interpreter Mohamed İsmael Rasool and driver Abdurrahman Direkçi continued on November 14, 2023, at the Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8. The court adjourned the hearing to February 21, 2024.
Vice News reporter Jacob Philip John Gingell Hanrahan, cameraman Philip John Pendlebury, interpreter Mohamed İsmael Rasool, and driver Abdurrahman Direkçi were detained on 28 August 2015 when the hotel they were staying in was raided. The British journalists and the translator were arrested on the allegations of “aiding an illegal organization,” while the driver was released pending trial. The British journalists were released on September 3, 2015, and subsequently deported. The Iraqi interpreter was released on January 4, 2016.

The final hearing of the case against 7 people, including journalist Şehriban Alkış, who were detained in the police intervention in the protest of Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, in front of Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Family Labour and Social Services on July 7, 2020, was held at the Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No.23 on November 14, 2023. The court sentenced 7 people to 8 months and 10 days each on the charge of ‘resisting to prevent public duty’. The court deferred the announcement of the verdict for 2 people and converted the sentences of 8 months and 10 days each for 5 people into 5,000 TL judicial fines. The court acquitted 7 people on the charges of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’ and ‘damaging public property’.

The final hearing of the case against journalist Merdan Yanardağ, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ in his columns in the BirGün newspaper, was held at the Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No.2 on November 14, 2023. The court acquitted Merdan Yanardağ.
(11/132) Former Bar Association Chair on Trial in Diyarbakır…
On November 14, 2023, Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No.5 continued to hear the case against lawyer Mehmet Emin Aktar, former chair of Diyarbakır Bar Association, on the grounds of sharing the report of the search conducted in his office. The indictment demands a sentence for Mehmet Emin Aktar on the charge of ‘targeting officials who took part in the fight against terrorism’. The court adjourned the hearing to February 29, 2024.
(11/133) DBP Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…
The indictment prepared by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against Zekiye İlbasan, former Deputy Co-Chair of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), was accepted on November 15, 2023. The indictment demands a sentence for Zekiye İlbasan on the charges of ‘participating in unlawful meetings and demonstrations without arms and not dispersing despite the warning’, ‘resisting to prevent the execution of duty’, ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The first hearing of the case will be held on January 25, 2024. Zekiye İlbasan was detained on October 9, 2023, and arrested by the court on October 10, 2023.
