(07/150) Flood in Rize…

On July 14, 2021, flood and landslide swept Rize province. It is reported that 5 people have lost their lives while 2 people are still missing.

(07/151) Suspicious Death of a Child in Muş…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 14, 2021 that, a 12-year-old child (M. H.Y.) who was found hang from the door of Karşıyaka Quran course in central district of Muş on July 3, 2021; lost his life at the hospital on July 14, 2021. It is stated in the news reports that the child’s family rejects suicide claims, finding his death suspicious.

(07/152) Labour Killings…

On July 14, 2021, Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) revealed that at least 173 workers including 9 women, 6 children and 7 migrants died while working in June 2021. It is stated in the report that at least 1155 workers lost their lives in the first six months of 2021.

(07/153) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 14, 2021 that, the prisoners in Maraş Türkoğlu L Type Prison No 1 who are on hunger strike demanding an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, were subjected to physical violence of the correction officers and were put in solitary cells.

(07/154) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on July 14, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was not responded.

(07/155) Person Forced to be Police Informant in Izmir…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 14, 2021 that, a member of the Students’ Collective was forced to be a police informant, by the police officers who stops them at Karşıyaka portside in Izmir on June 12, 2021. A press declaration is held at the Human Rights Association (IHD) Izmir office and it is stated that the police made a general information check, seized this person’s phone and examined unlawfully, and asked several questions relating the person’s friends and activities. It is also stated that the police called the person to force to be a police informant.

(07/156) Person Forced to be Police Informant in Ankara…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 14, 2021 that, a member of the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TIP) was stopped by a group of people who claim to be police officers, was forcibly taken into a car and was forced to be a police informant. The person states the following: “The police officers made a general information check after showing their police identity cards. Then they wanted me to get in the car. And mentioned some places I have been and some activities I have done, so that I would understand that they have been following me. Then they asked me ‘Who made you a member of this party?’, and said ‘If you give us information about the party then we will help you at university. We could help you to find a job and financially support you’.”

(07/157) Police Intervention to a Protest in Urfa…

The police intervened the justice watch of Emine Şenyaşar and Ferit Şenyaşar in front of Urfa Courthouse on July 14, 2021, just before the visit of HDP co-chair Pervin Buldan. 2 people are released after statement procedures on the same day. On June 14, 2018, Justice and Development Party Urfa MP candidate İbrahim Halil Yıldız and his personal guards had a quarrel with shopkeepers in Suruç district of Urfa which resulted in death of Emine Şenyaşar’s husband Hacı Esved Şenyaşar and her sons Adil and Celal Şenyaşar.

(07/158) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the press declaration in front of the Consulate General of Greece in Istanbul on July, 14, organized by the Association of Families of Prisoners (TAYAD) members to demand release of their arrested relatives in Greece. The police detained 4 people (Hatun Polat, Cansu Kalender, Feridun Osmanağaoğlu and 1 more person with unknown name) who are released after statement procedures.

(07/159) Arrested Asylum Seeker in Istanbul…

Iranian asylum seeker Zohren Momeni, who has been detained on the grounds of “tearing Turkish flag” in Büyükçekmece district of Istanbul on July 12, 2021; is arrested by the court on the grounds of “degrading the symbols of state sovereignty” on July 13, 2021.

(07/160) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 4 people including Etkin News Agency editor Semiha Şahin and reporter Pınar Gayıp, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23 is held on July 14, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for 4 people on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court adjourned the trial to November 9, 2021.

(07/161) People on Trial in Şırnak…

The trial of the case against 16 people, relatives of 34 people who died due to an air bombardment to Roboski village of Uludere district of Şırnak on December 28, 2011, is held at Şırnak Heavy Penal Court No 2 on July 14, 2021. The indictment demands sentence for 16 people on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, for they participated in a commemoration in 2015 for their relatives.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to October 4, 2021.

(07/162) Tahir Elçi Case…

The trial of the case against police officers S. T. and F. T., dismissed police officer M. B., and fugitive U. Y., for the killing of Diyarbakır Bar Association chair Tahir Elçi, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10 on July 14, 2021. Tahir Elçi was murdered in Diyarbakır on November 28, 2015.

The indictment demands jail sentences up to 6 years for 3 police officers on the charge of ‘causing death by culpable negligence’. The indictment demands heavy life imprisonment for 3 times, and 45 years of jail sentence for U. Y. who is alleged to be a PKK member, on the charges of ‘wilful killing’, ‘killing with eventual intent’, ‘opposition to Law no 6136’, ‘disrupting the unity of the state and integrity of the country’, ‘damaging property’.

The witnesses including 2 anonymous ones are heard at the trial. One witness, joining from prison, claimed that he has been subjected to torture and ill-treatment to give a specific testimony and stated the following: “The prosecutor said that they would release me if I make the statement they want. And I believed. (…) I am illiterate so I have signed whatever they wanted me. (…) I want to attend this trial in person, I cannot hear well so I cannot understand you via sound and vision system. They tormented us. And the prosecutor was there too while they said ‘You will blame Uğur and Mahsum for the murder of Tahir Elçi, otherwise we will kill you’.”

The court decided to send a writ for examination of the missing part of the video footage of the incident; to send digital records abroad for inquiry and to demand the list of all police officers on duty at the time of murder and adjourned the trial to January 12, 2022.

(07/163) ECHR Asked for Turkey’s Defence…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 14, 2021 that, the European Court of Human Rights has asked Turkey to submit its defence in the case of 81 academics who were dismissed from their jobs for signing the “We Will Not be a Part of this Crime” petition. It is reported that the ECHR asked the reason of dismissals, the claims of violations on the freedom of expression and organisation; the right to access to legal authorities and effectiveness of the State of Emergency Inquiry Commission for mass dismissals.

(07/164) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

76 of 178 people who have been detained in operations covering 47 cities through an Izmir based investigation, are arrested by the court on July 14, 2021. 102 people are released provided that 59 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

Defence Minister Hulusi Akar declared that 23,364 people are dismissed from Turkish Armed Forces, in alleged link to 15 July coup attempt.

(07/165) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

Ertuğrul Çekin, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Justice, declared that 288 of 289 cases in relation to 15 July coup attempt, are concluded by the local courts as of July 15, 2021. The local courts sentenced 1634 people to heavy life imprisonment, 1366 people to life imprisonment, 1890 people to jail penalties from 1 year to 20 years. 2,870 people have acquitted from all charges while the cases against 964 people have been dropped.

(07/166) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 43 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 6,907 as of July 14, 2021.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 50,367 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 5,500,151 as of July 4, 2021.
