(01/122) Operations and Attacks…
It is learned from the news coverage of 15 January 2024 that a soldier named Süha Köme, stationed in Nusaybin district of Mardin, was found shot dead in his home. It is reported that Süha Köme had committed suicide.
(01/123) Tunceli Co-Mayor on Trial
The first trial of the case against Birsen Orhan, co-mayor of Tunceli Municipality, who was elected under the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Parti) and removed from office by the Ministry of Interior and replaced with a trustee, was held at Tunceli Penal Court of First Instance on January, 15, 2025. The indictment seeks the conviction of Birsen Orhan for ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911’ and ‘resisting the execution of official duty’. After the defense presentations, the court decided to lift the house arrest and travel ban imposed on Birsen Orhan and adjourned the hearing to February 7, 2025.
Birsen Orhan was detained on November 24, 2024, and released under house arrest. On November 30, 2024, she was re-detained and arrested. Upon appeal, the house arrest order was reinstated on December 3, 2024.

The retrial of the case against Vetha Aydın Yüksel, a member of the Executive Board of the Human Rights Association (IHD) and former head of the Siirt branch, who was previously sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison by the Siirt Heavy Penal Court No 1 on charges of ‘membership in a terrorist organization’, was held on January 16, 2025, after the Diyarbakır Regional Court of Appeals’ 9th Penal Chamber overturned the previous verdict. Court sentenced Vetha Aydın Yüksel to 2 years and 6 months imprisonment for “being a member of an illegal organisation.”
(01/125) Journalist on Trial in Izmir…
Following the Constitutional Court’s ruling that the conviction of journalist Sultan Eylem Keleş for ‘insulting the president’ was a violation of her rights, the retrial of the case resumed at the Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on January 15, 2025. The court adjourned the hearing to January 29, 2025.
(01/126) Journalist on Trial in Trabzon…
Following the Constitutional Court’s ruling that the decision to postpone the announcement of the verdict in the case against journalist Çiğdem Akbayrak, who was accused of ‘insulting the president’ due to her social media posts, constituted a violation of her rights, a retrial was held at the Criminal Court No 2 of the Trabzon Regional Court on January 15, 2025. The journalist, Çiğdem Akbayrak, attended the hearing via SEGBIS. The court acquitted her.
