The Ministry of Defence announced that Naval Staff Major Şükrü Cömert fell sick on duty on January 9, 2021 and lost his life at Gülhane Research and Education Hospital on January 14, 2021.

(01/138) Child Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Şırnak…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 14, 2021 that, a 15-year-old child (D. E.) who was detained in Cizre district of Şırnak on January 9, 2021, was forced to sing the National Anthem all day under custody and was threatened by the police saying “We will give you an assignment every week and you will do it, otherwise you will bear the consequence”.

Selçuk Özdağ, deputy chair of the Future Party, is attacked by a group of 5 anonymous persons with guns and clubs who got off a car without license in front of his house in Ankara on January 15, 2021. It is learned that Selçuk Özdağ got injured at the head along with fractures in his fingers and arm.

Orhan Uğurluoğlu, Yeniçağ newspaper Ankara correspondent, is attacked by a group of 3 anonymous persons in Ankara on January 15, 2021. It is learned that Orhan Uğurluoğlu was injured at the arm. It is reported that the attackers said “We are coming from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). Do not criticize MHP. Greywolves will make you pay off”.

Afşin Hatipoğlu, lawyer and a programmer of KRT TV channel, is attacked by a group of 3 anonymous persons in Istanbul on January 14, 2021. It is learned that Afşin Hatipoğlu was injured in the attack. It is reported that the attackers threatened him, saying “Be careful about your words”.

(01/142) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 14, 2021 that, 4 prisoners kept in ward number C-4 in Maraş Türkoğlu L Type Prison No 1, who went on a hunger strike to demand an end to isolation of Abdullah Öcalan were subjected to physical violence of the correction officers. It is reported that 1 prisoner’s metal implants in a hand and a foot were broken and 1 prisoner’s arm was dislocated.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 14, 2021 that, Metin Kılıç, a prisoner in Adana Kürkçüler F Type Prison, is on hunger strike demanding to be transferred to another prison in Mardin, since December 30, 2020.

On January 14, 2021, 1 person (Güldem Hantaş) is detained in Toroslar district of Mersin, on the grounds of a protest that she participated in 2016.

(01/145) Former Bar Association Chair on Trial…

The final trial of the case against Mehmet Emin Aktar, former chair of Diyarbakır Bar Association, on the grounds that he participated in the events of Democratic Society Congress (DTK), is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4 on January 14, 2021.

The court sentenced lawyer Mehmet Emin Aktar to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(01/146) Co-Mayors on Trial in Mardin…

The trial of the case against Nilüfer Elik Yılmaz, HDP co-mayor of Kızıltepe district; and Gülistan Öncü, HDP co-mayor of Savur district, is held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 14, 2021.

Nilüfer Elik Yılmaz and Gülistan Öncü joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system.

After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of Nilüfer Elik Yılmaz and Gülistan Öncü and adjourned the trial to April 1, 2021.

The Ministry of Interior appointed sub-governors as trustees to Kızıltepe (on November 4, 2019) and to Savur (November 16, 2019). Gülistan Öncü was detained on November 15, 2019 and was arrested on November 26, 2019. Nilüfer Elik Yılmaz was detained on December 12, 2019 and was arrested by the court on December 16, 2019.

(01/147) Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against Ahmet Kaya, HDP co-mayor of Ergani district of Diyarbakır who was suspended, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 on January 14, 2021.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 30, 2021.

(01/148) Co-Mayor and Other People on Trial in Erzurum…

The first trial of the case against 9 people (7 of them are arrested) including Burhanettin Şahin, HDP co-mayor of Karayazı district of Erzurum who was suspended and replaced by a trustee, is held at Erzurum Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 14, 2021.

After defence hearings the court released 2 people (Adil Bingöl and Fesih Polat), and decided to continue detention of 5 people including Burhanettin Şahin until the next trial which is adjourned to April 7, 2021.

Burhanettin Şahin was detained on August 30, 2020 and was arrested on September 3, 2021.

(01/149) Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against Naşide Toprak, HDP co-mayor of Silvan district of Diyarbakır who was suspended and replaced by a trustee, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 on January 14, 2021.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 30, 2021.

Naşide Toprak was suspended by the Ministry of Interior on March 23, 2020 and the sub-governor was appointed as a trustee.

(01/150) Co-Mayor on Trial in Urfa…

The trial of the case against Hatice Çevik, HDP co-mayor of Suruç district of Urfa, is geld at Urfa Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 14, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for Hatice Çevik on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

After defence hearings the court released Hatice Çevik and adjourned the trial to April 13, 2021.

Hatice Çevik was detained on November 15, 2019 and was arrested on November 20, 2019. She was released from prison on June 23, 2020. The Ministry of Interior has appointed Suruç sub-governor as a trustee to Suruç Municipality.

(11/151) Journalist on Trial in Izmir…

The trial of the case against Mezopotamya News Agency reporter Ruken Demir, on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ is held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 19 on January 14, 2021.

After defence hearings the court rejected to lift judicial control conditions for Ruken Demir and adjourned the trial to February 23, 2021.

Ruken Demir was detained on November 12, 2019 and was arrested by the court on November 16, 2019. Ruken Demir was released at the first trial held on March 5, 2020.

(01/152) Journalist on Trial in Bayburt…

It is learned that the indictment of Bayburt Public Prosecutor’s Office against Ferhat Çelik, executive editor of Mezopotamya News Agency is accepted by Bayburt Penal Court of First Instance on January 14, 2021. Ferhat Çelik is charged for the news report, “Insects are put in meal for prisoners in Bayburt”, published on October 4, 2018. The first trial of the case will be held on February 2, 2021.

(01/153) People on Trial in Malatya…

The first trial of the case against 17 people including 3 arrestees, for being delegates of DTK, is held at Malatya Heavy Penal Court No 5 on January 14, 2021.

3 arrested defendants (Ali Piro, Özgür İncesu and Hasan Basri Çıplak) joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court released 3 people and adjourned the trial to March 19, 2021.

(01/154) Ban of Events in Batman…

Batman Governorate made a declaration and announced that all open-door and in-door meetings, demonstrations, press declarations, opening tents and stands, distributing leaflets and so on near Batman M Type Prison are banned for 15 days as of January 14, 2021.

Batman Governorate also declared that all activities such as open-door and in-door meetings, demonstrations, press declarations, opening tents and stands, sit-in protests, commemorations, hanging banners and so on in the city are subjected to permission of local administration.

(01/155) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 170 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 958 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on January 14, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 8,962.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 23,495 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 2,364,801 as of January 14, 2021.

It is learned that Güney Güven, an employee of Korgan Public Hospital in Ordu, lost his life from Covid-19 on January 14, 2021.
