(10/149) Mine Explosion in Bartın…

It is learned that 41 workers lost their lives and 26 workers were injured as a result of the explosion in the coal mine of the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises in Amasra district of Bartın on October 14, 2022. It is announced that an investigation was launched by Bartın Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the incident.

(10/150) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 17, 2022 that, 8 people including LGBTI+s who were detained by the police upon the complaint of persons who verbally and physically harassed and committed physical violence on these 8 people in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on October 13, 2022; were subjected to torture and ill-treatment during detention and at Kadıköy Rıhtım Station where they were taken to.

It is reported that 1 person’s arm was broken, 1 person’s eardrum was ruptured, 1 person had head trauma as a result of torture and ill-treatment. It is learned that the other detainees also had scars and bruises on their bodies due to torture and other ill-treatment.

(10/151) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 14, 2022 that, the application of former parliamentary members Ahmet Türk, Sırrı Sakık and Sırrı Süreyya Önder to visit the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş in Edirne F Type Prison was rejected by the Ministry of Justice.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 15, 2022 that, Ahmet Dizlek, a prisoner in Kocaeli Kandıra F Type Prison No. 2 was subjected to torture and ill-treatment on September 22, 2022 and was threatened to death by saying “We did not kill you but we will”.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 15, 2022 that, 2 prisoners (Feyyaz Başak and Akif whose surname is unknown) in Van High Security Prison were transferred to Elazığ Prison No. 1 and 2 under coercion. It is also stated in the news reports that 2 prisoners were subjected to physical violence.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 15, 2022 that, 3 prisoners (Sezar Durak, İsmail Kaya and Zeynel Taş) who were transferred from Urfa Hilvan Prison No. 1 and 2 to Yozgat T Type Prison No. 1 on September 30, 2022; were subjected to verbal violence at the entrance of the prison and some of their personal belongings were not allowed in the prison.

It is learned that the appeal made on October 14, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, in order to visit them was not responded.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on October 14, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(10/154) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened in the justice watch for ill prisoners held at Eminönü Square in Fatih district of Istanbul on October 15, 2022 and detained 4 people (Kumri Akgül, Fince Akman, Cemile Çiftçi and Cemile Karakaş) by using physical violence and handcuffing them behind their backs. Detained people are released on the same day.

(10/155) Detained Newspaper Distributor and Other People in Diyarbakır…

26 people including 1 newspaper and 2 children who were detained on the grounds of a report in Diyarbakır on October 14, 2022; are released on October 15, 2022.

(10/156) Detained People in Adıyaman…

On October 17, 2022, 5 people (Ercan Sucu, Abuzer Yaman, Güzel Demirci, Mahmut Yıldız and Hasan Sel) are detained on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ in house raids in Çelikhan district of Adıyaman.

(10/157) Detained People Through Antalya Based Investigation…

12 members of the Free Students’ Initiative and the Revolutionary Socialist Federation (DESOF) who were detained through an Antalya based investigation on October 11, 2022, are released by the court on judicial control conditions on October 14, 2022. The names of detained people learned so far are: Metin Encü, Sipan Satıç, Göksu Berfin Biter, Serhat Göregen, Ali Bütkül, Mir Hasan Yıldırım, Botan Artuç, Mustafa Aktaş, Fevzi Korkmaz and Zerrin Korkmaz.

(10/158) The Case Against Former HDP MP…

The final trial of the case against HDP Hakkari MP and the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-chair Leyla Güven, who has been stripped of MP status, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 9 on October 17, 2022. Leyla Güven joined the trial via sound and vision system from prison. After defence hearings the court sentenced Leyla Güven to 11 years 7 months and 15 days on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

(10/159) The Case Against Diyarbakır Bar Association Executives…

The final trial of the case against Cihan Aydın, former chair and the executive board members (Ahmet Dal, Erhan Aytekin, Fırat Üğer, Gazal Bayram, Serdar Çelebi, Özgür Yılmaz Biçen, Ömer Şeran, Mehmet Akbaş, Muhlis Oğurgül, Teyfik Karahan) of the Diyarbakır Bar Association, on the grounds of their statement on April 24, 2018 regarding the Armenian Genocide, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 11 on October 17, 2022. After defence hearings the court acquitted 11 people.

The final trial of the case against journalist Yusuf Karadaş, upon the complaint of International Defence Consulting Construction Industry and Trade Inc. over the article titled ““SADAT, the dark organization of the government”, published on Evrensel newspaper on October 19, 2021, is held at Istanbul Büyükçekmece Civil Court of First Instance No. 3 on October 17, 2022. The court sentenced Yusuf Karadaş to pay a compensation of 15,000 Turkish Liras.

(10/161) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against journalist Ayşegül Doğan, on the grounds of ‘establishing and leading an illegal organisation’, for the interviews she made with the executives of the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) and the events she participated in, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 9 on October 17, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to January 25, 2023.

(10/162) Decision of Non-Prosecution on Allegations of Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 14, 2022, that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office gave a non-prosecution decision upon the criminal complaint of Fince Akman, Kumri Akgül, Zeynep Calıhan and Songül İlker who were detained by using physical violence during the police intervention against the Justice Watch held in front of İstanbul Çağlayan Courthouse on May 26, 2022 about ill prisoners.

The General Directorate of Security announced on October 15, 2022 that legal proceedings were initiated against 12 social media accounts, for the social media posts about the explosion in which 41 workers lost their lives in the coal mine in Amasra district of Bartın.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 17, 2022 that, the copies of the 144th issue of the Kurdish newspaper Xwebûn to be sent from Diyarbakır to Istanbul were confiscated by the police at Diyarbakır Terminal and the bus companies were warned not to take the newspaper.

It is learned that 2 news reports about an article of journalist Barış Pehlivan published on https://www.gazeteduvar.com.tr and https://halktv.com.tr websites and 1 social media post are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Kilis Penal Court of Peace on October 14, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 14, 2022 that the event of HDP for the establishment anniversary that was to be held at Central Park in Adana was not permitted by the Governorate’s Office.

It is learned that the press declaration to be made outside of HDP’s provincial office in Adana on October 14, 2022 to protest the governorate’s decision was prevented by the police.

(10/167) Ban of Events in Hakkari…

Hakkari Governorate made a declaration on October 15, 2022 and announced that all meetings, open-door assemblies, demonstrations, marches, sit-in protests, human chains, op-ed stands, public sessions, any kind of audio-visual activities with mobile audio-visual vehicles, hunger strikes, opening stands, collecting petitions, flying sky lanterns or balloons, commemorations, concerts, festivals, theatre plays, screening shows, firing torches, distributing leaflets, hanging banners and so on are banned for 15 days as of October 16, 2022. All events are banned in Hakkari for 299 days since January 4, 2022.
