(01/130) Suspicious Death in Prison…

It is learned that 1 person (Murat E.) who was arrested on January 12, 2022, found suspiciously death in his solitary cell in Van M Type Prison on January 13, 2022.

It is reported that the prison administration has informed the family that Murat E. killed himself. It is learned that the investigation on the case is subjected to confidentiality order and Van Forensic Medicine Institution stated no certain cause of death in its report.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 17, 2022 that, 2 asylum seekers were frozen to death at the Iranian border in Saray district of Van.

It is learned that trans woman Günay Ö. is killed by an anonymous person who attacked her in front of her house in Karabağlar district of Izmir on January 17, 2022.

(01/133) Racist Attack in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 14, 2022 that, 2 people (N. A. and İ. A.) broke into the house of a Syrian family in Bayrampaşa district of Istanbul on January 12, 2022 and damaged the furniture in the house. It is claimed that N. A. is the owner of the house and attacked the tenants because they did not accept the rent increase he wanted.

It is reported that 2 people who were detained after the attack are released by the court on judicial control conditions.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 15, 2022 that, Murat E. who was detained in Van on January 11, 2022, was subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the police.

(01/135) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Şırnak…

It is learned that 2 people who were detained through a Şırnak based investigation on January 9 and 10, 2022, were handcuffed behind their backs and were forced to strip search at Şırnak Provincial Security Directorate.

(01/136) Lawyer Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment of Watchmen in Istanbul…

It is learned that lawyer Mürsel Ünder, a member of the Progressive Lawyers’ Association was subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the watchmen at Söğütlüçeşme metro bus station in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on January 16, 2022. Mürsel Ünder stated the following to the press: “The watchmen came and wanted to conduct general information check. I asked ‘Why do you want my ID? What is your suspicion?’ and told them that I am a lawyer. They almost broke my hand, there are several marks of physical violence on my body. I wanted them to call the police and they said they already did, but at least 10 more watchmen came until the police arrived. They pushed my head to the car and handcuffed me behind my back.” It is learned that Mürsel Ünder was taken to Hasanpaşa Police Station with handcuffs and was released after statement procedures.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 14, 2022 that, prisoners in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison were subjected to disciplinary proceedings for having a commemoration for Sakine Cansız who was killed in an armoured attack in Paris.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 14, 2022 that, prisoners in Istanbul Silivri L Type Prison No 5 were subjected to physical violence of the correction officers, that the heating does not work and prisoners were not given hot water.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 15, 2022 that, the wards in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison were searched with dogs, and personal belongings of prisoners were scattered around and sometimes seized.

It is learned that the appeal made on January 14, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, in order to visit them was not responded.

(01/139) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the press declaration about Enes Kara, a university student who killed himself, held in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on January 14, 2022. The police detained 83 people including 2 journalists (Yadigar Aygün and Tuba Apaydın) by torture and ill-treatment and prevented journalists from recording. Detained 83 people are released after statement procedures on January 15, 2022.

The police used rubber bullets and pepper spray to intervene the press declaration of Furkan Foundation members demanding release of arrested members, in Adana on January 16, 2022. It is learned that nobody was detained.

(01/141) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on January 14, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) headquarters on January 14, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(01/143) Detained People in Şırnak…

24 people were detained in house raids in İdil and Cizre districts of Şırnak and in Siirt, through a Şırnak based investigation on January 9 and 10, 2022. It is learned that 5 people were arrested by the court on January 14, 2022 and 5 people are released on judicial control conditions. The number of arrestees through this investigation is 9 while 15 people are released.

(01/144) Dedeoğulları Case…

The first trial of the case against 9 people including 2 arrestees, about the racist attack against Dedeoğulları family on May 12, 2021 where 7 family members got wounded, is held at Konya Heavy Penal Court No 8 on January 14, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for the defendants on the charges of ‘intentional injury’, ‘intentional injury with weapons’ and ‘violation of immunity of residence’.

A member of Dedeoğulları family is taken by the police out of the courtroom on the grounds of reacting against the expressions of the defendants. It is learned that 3 people including 1 child were taken out of the courtroom, detained by the police using physical violence and were released by the court on judicial control conditions on January 15, 2022.

The court decided to continue detention of 2 arrestees and refused to arrest other defendants and adjourned the trial to February 11, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 14, 2022 that, Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against Selçuk Özdağ, deputy chair of the Future Party for his expressions about the Supreme Council of Election.

(01/146) Removed Banner in Eskişehir…

It is learned that the banner reading “We Cannot Live On, We Want Mark-up Cancellation” hung on the Community House building in Eskişehir is removed by the order of Eskişehir Governorate on January 15, 2022. It is also reported that the Community House is imposed a penalty fine of 18,000 Turkish Liras on the grounds of violation of the Law of Misdemeanour.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 14, 2022 that, the video of university student Enes Kara, that he recorded and shared on social media before killing himself, is banned to access by Ankara Penal Court of Peace No 8upon the complaint of the Ministry of Family and Social Services.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 14, 2022 that, a social media post by B. T., about Enes Kara, the university student who killed himself, is banned to access on the grounds of ‘protection of national security and public order’.

It is learned that the news reports and a social media post about confiscation on the accounts of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, published on https://www.diken.com.tr and https://www.birgun.net websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by İstanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No 4 on January 14, 2022.

It is learned that the news reports about Esenyurt district municipality, published on https://haber.sol.org.tr, https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr and https://www.krttv.com.tr websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by İstanbul Penal Court of Peace No 10 on January 14, 2022.

(01/148) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On January 14, 2022, 15 people are detained in operations covering 12 cities through an Ankara based investigation.

60 of 162 people who were detained through an Izmir based investigation on January 11, 2022 are arrested by the court on January 15, 2022. It is learned that 100 people are released provided that 57 of them will be on judicial control conditions and 2 people are still under custody.

(01/149) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 167 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 67,857 as of January 14, 2022.

The Ministry of Health declared that 177 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 63,967 as of January 15, 2022.

The Ministry of Health declared that 136 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 54,100 as of January 16, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 84,758 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 10,457,164 as of January 16, 2022.
