(07/090) Police Intervention at a Protest in Ankara…

Following a protest organized by the Private Sector Teachers’ Union on July 16, 2026, in front of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance’s Dikmen Campus in Ankara’s Çankaya district, police intervened against those attempting to march to the Ministry of Education and detained at least 40 people—including union leaders—using physical force. Those detained were released the same day after giving statements at the police station.

(07/091) Mayor and Others Detained in Ankara…

Of the 30 people detained on July 11, 2026, as part of an investigation into the Ankara Çankaya Municipality, 24—including Mayor Hüseyin Can Güner—were detained on July 15, 2026, by the magistrate’s court to which they were referred on charges of “forming a criminal organization,” “membership in a criminal organization,” “bribery,” “bid-rigging,” while 6 others were released under judicial supervision.

(07/092) Deputy Group Leader of the City Council Detained in Manisa…

Ahmet Anıl Ceylan, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Deputy Group Leader of the Manisa Metropolitan City Council, was detained on July 16, 2026. The reason for the detention could not be determined.

Nasuh Mahruki, former president of the Search and Rescue Association (AKUT), was detained on July 16, 2026, on the grounds of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility,” based on a social media post related to the July 15 coup attempt.

(07/094) Theater Artist Detained in Balıkesir…

Theater artist Levent Üzümcü was detained on July 16, 2026, in the Burhaniye district of Balıkesir on the grounds of his social media posts as part of an Istanbul-based investigation. It was reported that Levent Üzümcü would be taken to Istanbul.

(07/095) Individuals Detained in Izmir…

On July 14, 2026, four people were detained on allegations of “bribery” and “extortion” as part of an investigation targeting the Güzelbahçe District Municipality in Izmir.

(07/096) Person Arrested in Şırnak…

On July 12, 2026, Mahir Can Ada, who was detained in the Cizre district of Şırnak and subjected to torture and other ill-treatment, was arrested on July 14, 2026, by the magistrate’s court to which he was referred, on charges of “resisting the police.”

(07/097) Trial of a Journalist in Diyarbakır…

The trial of journalist Berivan Kutlu, which was initiated at the Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 4, continued on July 16, 2026. The indictment seeks to punish the journalist for the crime of “spreading organization propaganda.” The court adjourned the hearing until December 1, 2026.

The trial of JINNEWS News Director Öznur Değer, who is facing charges for protesting the torture and other ill-treatment she was subjected to during a police raid on her home on February 7, 2025, began on July 14, 2026, at the Mardin Kızıltepe Criminal Court of First Instance No. 6. The indictment seeks to punish the journalist for the crime of “resisting the performance of official duties.” The court adjourned the hearing until December 15, 2026.

The trial of Müslüm Koyun, an ETHA employee, which was filed at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 22, continued on July 16, 2026. The indictment seeks to punish Müslüm Koyun for the crime of “being a member of an organization.” The court ordered Müslüm Koyun’s release and adjourned the hearing to a later date.

Müslüm Koyun had been arrested on February 3, 2026.

(07/100) Publishing House Owner and Employee on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of Hakkı Boltan, owner of Aram Publications, and Delil Zengeralp, an employee of the publishing house, continued on July 16, 2026, at the Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 4. The case was filed on the grounds of the seizure of two books by police at the Aram Publications booth during a book fair held in Diyarbakır in 2024. The indictment seeks the conviction of the two individuals on charges of “spreading organization propaganda.” The court adjourned the hearing until December 1, 2026.

The trial of Aydın Kılıçdere, a former general president of the Limter-İş Union, which was filed at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 25, began on July 14, 2026. The indictment seeks to convict Aydın Kılıçdere on the charge of “being a member of an organization.” The court ordered Aydın Kılıçdere’s release and adjourned the hearing until October 6, 2026.

Aydın Kılıçdere had been arrested on February 3, 2026.

The trial of Sıtkı Güngör, a leader of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), and Beycan Taşkıran, General Secretary of the Limter-İş Union, which was filed at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 11, began on July 14, 2026. The indictment seeks the conviction of Sıtkı Güngör and Beycan Taşkıran on charges of “membership in an organization.” The court ordered the release of Sıtkı Güngör and Beycan Taşkıran and adjourned the hearing to a later date.

Sıtkı Güngör and Beycan Taşkıran had been arrested on February 3, 2026.

The trial of Okan Danacı, a member of the ESP Central Executive Committee, which was initiated at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 22, continued on July 16, 2026. The indictment seeks to convict Okan Danacı of the crime of “being a member of an organization.” The court ordered Okan Danacı’s release and adjourned the hearing to a later date.

The trial of Sinem Çelebi, a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF), which was initiated at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 22, continued on July 16, 2026. The court ordered Sinem Çelebi’s release and adjourned the hearing to a later date.

Sinem Çelebi had been arrested on February 3, 2026.

The trial of ecology activist Cemil Aksu, which was initiated at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 22, began on July 14, 2026. The indictment seeks to convict Cemil Aksu of the crime of “being a member of an organization.” The court ordered Cemil Aksu’s release and adjourned the hearing to December 8, 2026.

Cemil Aksu had been arrested on February 3, 2026.

The trial of theater artist Ayşenur Demir, which was filed at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 22, began on July 16, 2026. The indictment seeks to convict Ayşenur Demir of the crime of “being a member of an organization.” The court ordered her release and adjourned the hearing to a later date.

Hüseyin Can Güner, the mayor of Ankara’s Çankaya district, who was arrested on July 15, 2026, was removed from office by the Ministry of the Interior on the same day.

(07/109) Discriminatory and Phobic Practice in Istanbul…

According to news reports on July 16, 2026, it was learned that the phrase “sexual orientation” had been removed from the Physician’s Oath during the graduation ceremony at Istanbul Yeditepe University’s Faculty of Medicine.
