(05/100) Police Intervention in Protest in Istanbul…

On May 13, 2025, police intervened against protesters at an event held at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, arresting 96 people using physical violence and handcuffing them behind their backs. Eighty-one people were released on May 14, 2025, after being questioned by the police. On the same day, 15 people were referred to a magistrate’s court on charges of “resisting the performance of duty,” with 6 being detained and 8 released under judicial control conditions.

(05/101) Journalist subjected to physical violence and detained while covering news in Istanbul…

T24 reporter Can Öztürk was physically assaulted by police and handcuffed while covering a protest at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul on May 13, 2025. It was also reported that his press card was torn by the police. Can Öztürk was released on May 14, 2024, by the magistrate’s court with judicial control conditions.

(05/102) Investigation launched against Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor…

It was learned that an investigation was launched against Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on the grounds that he insulted public officials in a statement he made as part of an investigation against him, and that Ekrem İmamoğlu gave a statement to the prosecutor’s office on May 14, 2025, as part of the investigation.

According to news reports on May 13, 2025, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has prepared an indictment against Hüseyin Baş, the General Chairman of the Independent Turkey Party (BTP), on allegations that he insulted the President in a speech he made.

According to news reports on May 13, 2025, the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against Zafer Party Spokesperson Azmi Karamahmutoğlu on the grounds of “insulting a public official” based on a social media post.

(05/105) Trial of a Lawyer in Istanbul…

The trial of lawyer Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı, which was initiated at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 26, continued on May 13, 2025. The indictment seeks the punishment of Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı on charges of “membership in an organization.” The court decided to maintain the travel ban on Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı and postponed the hearing to September 25, 2025.

Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı was detained on February 6, 2024, and arrested by the magistrate’s court to which she was referred. She was released at the hearing of the trial on February 12, 2025.

(05/106) Persons on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of nine people who protested against trade relations between Turkey and Israel during the President’s speech at the “TRT World Forum” event held at the Istanbul Congress Center on November 29-30, 2024, continued on May 13, 2025, at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 8. The indictment seeks the punishment of the nine individuals for “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911.” The court postponed the hearing to September 30, 2025.

(05/107) Internet Content Subject to Access Restrictions…

An academic who prepared a report on the revocation of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu’s diploma has been targeted with a https://www.sozcu. com.tr/, https://www.birgun.net/, https://haber.sol.org.tr/ have been blocked under Article 8/A of Law No. 5651 on the grounds of national security and public order.
