(05/102) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 13, 2020 that, 3 militants died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in Haftanin area of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on April 25, 2020.

It is learned that 1 soldier got wounded due to an explosion during passage of a military vehicle in Çağlayan town of Erzincan on May 13, 2020.

(05/103) Person Was Subjected to Police Violence in Aydın…

On May 13, 2020, the police detained a person having a quarrel with police officers for not wearing a face mask outside, in Kuşadası district of Aydın. The police handcuffed the person behind his back and used physical violence. It could be seen on video recordings of the incident that some of the police officers intervening the person do not wear face masks either. Name of detained person is unknown.

(05/104) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of Mary 13, 2020 that, in Izmir Aliağa Şakran Women’s Prison, food and bread delivering staff do not wear gloves and face masks despite of Covid-19 pandemic, and some wardens enter into wards without gloves and face masks. It is also learned that personal belongings of prisoners were scattered by wardens during searches.

(05/105) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The press declaration in front of Mining Monument in Çankaya district of Ankara on May 13, 2020, is intervened by the police on the ground of “lack of permission from governorate’s office” and detained 14 people by using physical violence. The commemoration was organized by Alınteri journal, United Workers Congress, Revolutionary Party, Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), Community Houses, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Worker newspaper, Kaldıraç journal, Karala journal and Partizan group.

Detained people are released after statement procedures on the same day. Names of detained people are unknown.

(05/106) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1282 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on May 13, 2020 at 13.30 and at 18.00, and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(05/107) Police Intervention to a Protest in Düzce…

On May 13, 2020, the police intervened the press declaration of Alev Şahin in order to regain her job from which she was dismissed by a state of emergency decree, in front of Düzce Governorate and detained her. Alev Şahin was released on the same day, after being fined for violating Law of Misdemeanour and Public Health Law.

(05/108) Arrested Person for ‘Insulting the President’…

  1. A. (46, m), who was arrested in Afyon on April 14, 2020, on the grounds of “insulting the President on social media posts” and who is reported to have schizophrenia, is released from prison upon approval of the appeal of his lawyers to a superior court on May 13, 2020.

(05/109) HDP Executive on Trial…

The first trial of the case against Bülent Uyguner, former Party Assembly member of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 32 on May 13, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for Bülent Uyguner on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, ‘making successive propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and ‘provoking hatred and hostility among public’.

Bülent Uyguner joined the trial via sound and vision system from prison. After defence hearings the court rejected to release Bülent Uyguner and adjourned the trial to July 9, 2020.

Bülent Uyguner was detained on November 26, 2019 in Kocaeli and was arrested by the court on November 28, 2019.

(05/110) Arrested EMEP Executive in Adana…

Ferit Kilis, Yüreğir district chair of Labour Party (EMEP) in Adana, who was arrested on May 1, 2020 for his social media posts, on the grounds of ‘targeting public employee assigned in anti-terror activity’; is released from prison upon approval of the appeal of his lawyers to a superior court on May 13, 2020.

(05/111) Former MP on Trial…

The first trial of the case against former MP Mahmut Alınak is held at Kars Heavy Penal Court No 2 on May 13, 2020.

The indictment states the phone call of Mahmut Alınak with two disputed families, donating the profit from his book “Mehmet Tunç and Bekes” to Mehmet Tunç’s family, giving a petition to the United Nations for acceptance of Kurdish as an official language and other political activities as elements of crime; and demands life imprisonment of Mahmut Alınak on the charge of ‘committing an act to place all, or part, of the territory of the state under the sovereignty of a foreign state or to disrupt the unity of the state or to weaken the independence of the state or to separate part of the territory under the sovereignty of the state from the state administration’.

After defence hearings the court released Mahmut Alınak and adjourned the trial.

Mahmut Alınak was detained in Kars on February 13, 2020 and was arrested by the court on February 17, 2020.

Mahmut Alınak’s book “Mehmet Tunç and Bekes” (2017) was banned by Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No 2 on December 5, 2019.

(05/112) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 58 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,639 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on May 13, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 3,952 and total number of confirmed cases is 143,114 as of May 13, 2020.
