(03/122) Earthquakes in Antep and Maraş…

The Minister of Family and Social Services made a statement on March 14, 2023 and declared that a total of 1,915 unaccompanied children were registered in the system, 1,678 of them were identified and given to their families, 151 children were in the hospital, 86 children were in the institutions of the ministry, and 42 children could not be identified.

(03/123) Detained Journalist in Istanbul…

Mezopotamya Agency grant holder Ferhat Çelik was detained at Feriköy Police Station in Istanbul where he went to make official statement through an investigation on March 14, 2023, was detained on the grounds of a detention warrant issued through another investigation against him. Ferhat Çelik was released after statement procedures on the same day.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 13, 2023 that, director Orhan Eskiköy was detained in Samandağ district of Hatay where he was recording on March 11, 2023, and was released after statement procedures.

(03/125) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against Reyhan Çapan, editor-in-chief of Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, on the grounds of the controvert and rebut to the news report “Child killers” in the issue of the newspaper dated 17 June 2014 was not published appropriately, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on March 14, 2023. The court sentenced Reyhan Çapan to a judicial fine of 50,000 Turkish Liras.

(03/126) Union Executives and Members on Trial in Ankara…

The trial of the case against 8 people, including the Health and Social Service Workers’ Union (SES) co-chair several central executive board members, is held at the Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 22 on March 13, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for former co-chairs Gönül Erden and Bedriye Yorgun, current co-chair Selma Atabey, former central executive board members Belkıs Yurtsever and Fikret Çağlayan, former Ankara Branch executives Rona Temelli, Erdal Turan and Ramazan Taş, on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. After defence hearings, the court decided to release Gönül Erden and continue detention of Selma Atabey and adjourned the trial to June 5, 2023.

Gönül Erden was among those who were detained on May 25, 2021 through the investigation on members and executives of SES, and was released on June 1, 2021. She was detained once again on September 21, 2021 upon the prosecutor’s appeal and was arrested by the court. Selma Atabey was arrested at the trial of the case held on July 4, 2022.

(03/127) ESP Executive on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) Party Assembly member Ali Haydar Keleş is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 25 on March 13, 2023. The court decided to release Ali Haydar Keleş with a ban on leaving the country and adjourned the trial. Ali Haydar Keleş was detained in Edirne on February 28, 2023 and was arrested by the court.

(03/128) People on Trial in Adana…

The first trial of the case against 24 members and executives of Binevş Culture and Arts Association including 4 arrestees is held at Adana Heavy Penal Court No. 11 on March 13, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 24 people on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, ‘organising and leading unlawful assemblies’, ‘endangering traffic safety’, ‘purchasing or carrying or possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition’. After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of 4 people and adjourned the trial to June 5, 2023. On June 27, 2022, 37 people were detained through an Adana based investigation and 4 of them were arrested by the court on July 7, 2022. The prosecutor’s office decided non-prosecution for 13 people and prepared an indictment against 24 people.

(03/129) People on Trial in Izmir…

The final trial of the case against 38 people who were detained by the police with torture, on the grounds of occupying the faculty building in Ege University on May 22, 2014, to protest death of 301 miners in the mine pit fire in Soma district of Manisa on May 13, 2014; is held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on March 6, 2023. The court sentenced 30 people to 3 years and 4 months each on the charge of ‘prevention of the right to education and training’ and decided to drop the case against 8 people. The court acquitted 38 people on the charges of ‘damaging public property’, ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’, ‘resisting to prevent public duty’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

It is learned that the news reports about the embezzlement allegations for 3 people at Istanbul Fatih Mosque, published on https://www.gazeteduvar.com.tr, https://artigercek.com, https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Gaziosmanpaşa Penal Court of Peace No. 1 on March 13, 2023.

It is learned that the news report about construction projects in the earthquake region, published on https://ankahaber.net are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No. 6 on March 8, 2023.

(03/131) Banned Book…

It is learned that, the ban for publication, distribution and sale of the book “Living Qur’an” of İhsan Eliacik which was ruled by Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No. 1 upon the request of the Presidency of Religious Affairs, on the grounds that “it contains objectionable elements in terms of the basic characteristics of the religion of Islam” was lifted upon objection on March 13, 2023.
