It is learned from the news coverage of June 13, 2022 that, Muhammet Yıldırım, a prisoner kept in Bayburt Prison, lost his life in Trabzon Public Hospital where he was taken after suicide attempt.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 13, 2022 that, Fethi Ün, a prisoner who had a brain haemorrhage in Denizli Prison, lost his life in the hospital where he was taken after being released from prison on respite of execution for 3 months.

(06/149) Racist Attack in Istanbul…

It is learned that a racist group attacked waste paper workers in Ataşehir district of Istanbul on June 13, 2022 and burned down the warehouses. It is reported that 3 people were injured in the attack and 1 of them (Jiyan Yaşar) was injured with a knife.

(06/150) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Konya…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 14, 2022 that, 4 women who were detained by the police after the march of the Furkan Foundation members in Konya on June 12, 2022; were subjected to strip search at the Anti-Terror Department of the Provincial Security Directorate.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 14, 2022 that, Abdurrahman Aziz, a prisoner in Izmir Kırıklar F Type Prison No 2, was kept in a solitary cell and his petitions to be put in a 3-persons ward was not put in process.

It is learned that the appeal made on June 9, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(06/153) Police Intervention to a Protest in Konya…

The police intervened the members of Furkan Foundation as they were dispersing after the march held in Konya on June 12, 2022, to demand release of arrested members; and detained 22 people by using physical violence and handcuffing them behind their backs. 7 of the detainees are arrested by the court on June 13, 2022 while 15 people are released on judicial control conditions.

(06/154) Interventions Against “March to Gemlik” Demonstrations… 

On June 12, 2022, the police intervened the group gathering in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on June 13, 2022 to participate in the “March to Gemlik” to demand an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan; and detained 70 people by using physical violence. 2 of them (the Peoples’ Democratic Party [HDP] Kadıköy district co-chair Koray Türkay and İsmail Temel) are arrested by the court on June 13, 2022 while 23 people are released on judicial control conditions. 45 people have been released after the statement procedures at the police.

The police and private security guards intervened in the students who wanted to attend the Metropolitan Municipality Council meeting in Izmir held on June 13, 2022 to protest the transportation hikes in the city and forced them to move away from the meeting hall. It is learned that no one was detained as a result of the intervention.

The police intervened the people who were preventing the construction equipment from entering a park for the demolition in Çekmeköy district of Istanbul, on June 13, 2022, and detained 2 people. Detained people are released the same day.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on June 13, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Ankara on June 13, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(06/159) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the sit-in protest of the Electricity, Gas, Water, Dam Workers Union (Enerji-Sen) to demand reinstatement of dismissed EnerjiSa workers, held outside of the Sabancı Center in Beşiktaş district of Istanbul on June 14, 2022. and detained 6 people including the union chair Süleyman Keskin and the founder chair Kamil Kartal. It is also reported that the police prevented journalists from recording.

On June 14, 2022, 3 people (Mehmet Çalasın, Aziz Turhan and Ahmet Baştuğ) are detained in Istanbul through an investigation against the Socialist Assemblies Federation on the grounds of a banner hung to commemorate İbrahim Kaypakkaya.

(06/161) Özgür Gündem Case…

On November 3, 2020, the Penal Department No 3 of Istanbul Regional Court has overturned the verdict of acquittal of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Turkey representative Erol Önderoğlu, writer Ahmet Nesin and Human Rights Foundation of Turkey chair and Turkish Medical Association (TTB) chair Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı, in the “Özgür Gündem case”. On July 17, 2019, Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 have acquitted Erol Önderoğlu, Ahmet Nesin and Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı who were on trial for participating in “Editors in Chief on Watch” campaign to support Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree.

The retrial of the case is held on June 14, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to October 19, 2022.

(06/162) Former HDP Co-Chair on Trial…

The Penal Department No 21 of the Ankara Regional Court of Justice has overturned the local court’s verdict on the case against HDP’s former co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş. The retrial is held at Ankara Heavy penal Court No 25 on June 13, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Demirtaş on the charge of “threatening by taking advantage of the frightening power of organizations”, based on his statements about the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor in his defence in a trial.

Demirtaş attended the trial from the prison via sound and vision system. The court adjourned the trial.

(06/163) Parliamentary Member on Trial…

The trial of the case against HDP Istanbul MP Hüda Kaya is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4 on June 14, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Hüda Kaya on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, on the grounds of her social media posts, protests and events she participated in.

The court adjourned the trial to November 1, 2022.

(06/164) Co-Mayors and Other People on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Mehmet Fatih Taş and Fatma Ay, co-mayors of Kulp district of Diyarbakır, and HDP district co-chair Mehmet Abidin Karaman, Kulp Municipality Civil Works Director Şener Aktaş, Mehmet Emin Ay and Kulp district council Yücel Çete and Ümit Fidan, on the charges of ‘killing on purpose’, ‘disrupting the integrity and unity of the country’, ‘intentional killing by causing fire, flood, destruction, sinking, bombing or by using nuclear, biological or chemical weapons’ is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on June 13, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to September 26, 2022.

(06/165) Co-Mayors on Trial in Mardin…

The trial of the case against Nilüfer Elik Yılmaz, HDP co-mayor of Kızıltepe district; and Gülistan Öncü, HDP co-mayor of Savur district, is held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 2 on June 13, 2022.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for Nilüfer Elik Yılmaz and Gülistan Öncü on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court adjourned the trial to October 10, 2022.

The Ministry of Interior appointed sub-governors as trustees to Kızıltepe (on November 4, 2019) and to Savur (November 16, 2019). Gülistan Öncü was detained on November 15, 2019 and was arrested on November 26, 2019. Nilüfer Elik Yılmaz was detained on December 12, 2019 and was arrested by the court on December 16, 2019. Öncü and Yılmaz were released from the prison on April 1, 2021.

(06/165) DBP Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) deputy co-chair Mehmet Şirin Tunç is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 on June 13, 2022.

Şirda Erol, a Syrian citizen who was heard as a witness, stated the following regarding the previous statement alleged to be taken at Adana Public Prosecutor’s Office: “I have signed a paper back then. I did not make such a statement. I do not accept this as my official statement”. The court adjourned the trial to September 20, 2022.

The final trial of the case against Mehmet Hafız Şık, a member of MEBYA-DER (The Association of People Lost Their Relatives in the Cradle of Civilizations) is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on June 14, 2022. The court sentenced Mehmet Hafız Şık to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(06/167) Party Membership of CHP Executive Dropped by Court…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 14, 2022 that the Court of Cassation dropped CHP Istanbul chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu’s party membership today as the verdict in the case against her was finalised.

On June 14, 2022, 42 people are detained in operations covering 4 cities through a Mersin based investigation.

(06/169) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared on June 13, 2022 that 19 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the number of Covid-19 cases is 7,322 between May 30 and June 5, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 98,976 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 15,078,186 as of June 5, 2022.
