(02/125) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defense (MSB) announced that 1 soldier (Adem Kel) died as a result of a vehicle accident in Şırnak on February 13, 2024.

(02/126) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 14, 2024, that Sevinç Sönmez, a prisoner in Ankara Sincan Women’s Prison, demanded her handcuffs to be uncuffed and was requested to say “Please open the handcuffs” by the doctor and was taken back to prison without being treated. It is learned that a prisoner named Kavak Özbek, who is also kept in the same prison, was taken back to prison without being treated because of rejecting to be examined in handcuffs.

(02/127) Human Rights Association Member and Executives Detained in Tunceli…

On February 13, 2023, a delegation including political party executives and members and executives of the Human Rights Association Dersim Branch was denied permission to go to the gold mine in the İliç district of Erzincan where 9 workers were buried in a landslide. The police detained IHD Dersim Branch Co-Chairs Gürbüz Solmaz and Gönül Sonbahar, IHD member Nülifer Aktağ and lawyer Gökmen Yeşil.

(02/128) People Detained in Mersin…

On February 13, 2024, 14 people including Nuray Şahin, executive of Çukurova Association for Assistance to Families of Prisoners and Detainees (Çukurova TUAY-DER), were detained in house raids in Mersin. It is learned that the prosecutor’s office issued a confidentiality order on the case and restricted lawyer visits for 24 hours. 2 of the detainees (Fatma Demir and Zana Temiz) were arrested by the criminal peace judgeship on the same day on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. 3 people were released on judicial control condition. It is learned that 9 people are still under custody.

(02/129) People Detained in Diyarbakır…

6 people (Peyam Kutlu, Berivan Nergiz, Eyüp Hekimoğlu, Hêja Jiyan Arıkboğa, Yusuf Yokuş, and Yusuf Taşcar) were detained during house raids in the Bağlar district of Diyarbakır on February 14, 2024. The reason for the detention could not be learned.

(02/130) People Detained in Batman…

6 people (Halil Yıldırım, Adnan Vural, Hamza Karaman, Kadir Nebioğlu, Samet Aravi and Diyar Yarma) were detained during house raids in Batman on February 14, 2024. The reason for the detention could not be learned.

(02/131) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalist Hayrı Demir, upon the complaint of Maltepe University Rector due to a news report he made, started on February 13, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 8. After the defences, the court adjourned the hearing to May 9, 2024.

(02/132) Journalist and Others on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 9 people, including Mehmet Kamış, former Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the shutdown Zaman newspaper, continued on February 13, 2024, at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26.

The indictment demands sentences for the defendants on the charges of “attempting to abolish the Grand National Assembly of Turkey or preventing it from performing its duty”, “attempting to abolish the Government of the Republic of Turkey or preventing it from performing its duty”, “attempting to abolish the constitutional order” and ” being a member of an illegal organization”.

After the defences, the court decided to continue the arrest of Mehmet Kamış and adjourned the trial to May 2, 2024.

Mehmet Kamış was detained on November 23, 2023, and was arrested after statement procedures at the court.

(02/133) Police Officers on Trial in Istanbul…

On February 13, 2024, the trial of the case against 3 police officers (L. M., C. B. and S. E. K.) for strip search of Mücella Yapıcı and Cansu Yapıcı, who were detained during Gezi Park protests in 2013, continued at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 11. The indictment demands a jail sentence from 3 years to 12 years for the defendants on the charge of ‘torture’. The court rejected the demand of the complainant to hear the witnesses and to investigate the scene of the incident and adjourned the trial to June 10, 2024.

(02/134) Ban on Events and Demonstrations…

Governorate of Van announced on February 13, 2024, that demonstrations, outdoor and indoor meetings, press declarations, sit-ins, and surveys, setting up/opening tents and stands, organizing petitions, distributing leaflets, brochures, and flyers, and all other forms of protest activities are banned for 3 days between February 14, 2024, and February 16, 2024.

The Governorate of Tunceli announced on February 13, 2024, that following the landslide in the gold mine in the İliç district of Erzincan, where 9 workers were buried under the collapse, leaving Tunceli for Erzincan to organize demonstrations and events related to the incident was banned for 5 days between February 14, 2024, and February 18, 2024.
