The Ministry of National Defence announced that 1 soldier (İbrahim Han) who were injured in an explosion in the Zap area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government during the Claw-Lock military operation of the Turkish Armed Forces on October 12, 2022, died in hospital.

(10/119) Police Committed Suicide in Osmaniye…

It is claimed in the news coverage of October 12, 2022, that the reason for the suicide of the police officer Yunus Emre Örs, in Hasanbeyli district of Osmaniye on October 3, 2022, was the mobbing he was subjected to. The General Directorate of Security made a statement regarding the news reports and stated that Yunus Emre Örs was assigned to Hasanbeyli district from Kadirli district in order to “continue his treatment more comfortably”, not for mobbing reasons.

It is learned that Süphan Çabuk, an ill prisoner in Rize Kalkandere L Type Prison died in hospital on October 12, 2022.

(10/121) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 12, 2022 that, journalist Ziya Ataman who was transferred from Van High Security Prison to Erzurum Dumlu High Security Prison No. 2 on August 7, 2022, was being kept in a solitary cell. Ziya Ataman stated the following about the conditions in prison in his letter: “The cell is quite narrow and I barely can breathe. It is not possible for us to see the sun, there is no room to even pace. I spend 22.5 hours a day in this place where life itself is being suffocated. I only have the right to open air for 1.5 hours a day.”

It is learned from the news coverage of October 12, 2022 that, Yücel Balyeci, a prisoner in Antalya Alanya L Type Prison was transferred to another prison under coercion. The name of the transfer prison is unknown.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 12, 2022 that, Süleyman Acun, a prisoner in Antalya Alanya L Type Prison was taken out of his ward and put in a solitary cell.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 12, 2022 that, 5 prisoners (Necat Yılmaz, İskender Yalçın, Sedat Baygeldi, Müslüm Demir and Rojhat Erçel) in Antep H Type Prison were transferred to other prisons under coercion. It is reported that Necat Yılmaz and Müslüm Demir were transferred to Anlatya S Type Prison, İskender Yalçın and Sedat Baygeldi were transferred to Bodrum S Type Prison and Rojhat Erçel was transferred to Konya Ereğli Prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 12, 2022 that, 270 prisoners in Diyarbakır E Type Prison were transferred to other prisons under coercion.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 13, 2022 that, the food given to prisoners in Bolu F Type Prison was inadequate, the right to sport of prisoners was prevented, and personal belongings of the prisoners such as books, notebooks and clothes were seized during ward searches.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 13, 2022 that, 36 prisoners in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison were subjected to disciplinary proceedings on the grounds of going on a hunger strike and some prisoners were given the penalty of prevention from certain activities for 1 month while some others were given the penalty of prevention from paid work for 1 month as a result of proceedings.

It is learned that a decision to postpone the execution for Sibel Balaç, who has been on hunger strike in Ankara Sincan Women’s Prison since December 19, 2021, is given on October 12, 2022. It is reported that on October 13, 2022 Sibel Balaç is released from Ankara Etlik City Hospital, where she was held after procedures.

2 people including 1 child [O. Ç. (17) and Erdem Keskin] who were detained in Yüksekova district of Hakkari on October 9, 2022 are arrested by the court on October 12, 2022.

(10/124) Police Raid to Journalist’s House in Istanbul…

The house of Sözcü newspaper reporter Sayime Başçı was raided by the police on October 13, 2022 on the grounds that “a suicide bomber was reported”. It is learned that Sayime Başçı was not at home during the raid. The police left the house after the report turned out to be groundless.

The trial of the case against 26 people for the Gezi Park protests in Ankara in 2013, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 14 on October 12, 2022. The prosecutor has demanded acquittal first, but then declared legal opinion once again and demanded sentence on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. It is learned that 2 members of the court board were changed with news judges and statements of 2 secret witnesses and 1 open witness were added to the case file. The court adjourned the trial to December 1, 2022.

(10/126) Lawyers on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan (Rezan Sarıca, Ali Maden, Baran Doğan, Cengiz Yürekli, İnan Akmeşe, Mahmut Taşçı and Mehmet Selim Okçuoğlu) is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 33 on October 12, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for 7 lawyers on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court adjourned the trial to December 7, 2022.

The trial of the case against Evrensel newspaper’s editor in chief Görkem Kınacı, Birgün newspaper’s news editor Uğur Şahin and birgun.net website editor Uğur Koç, for the news reports about a member of the Constitutional Court, is held at Istanbul Beykoz Penal Court of First Instance No. 6 on October 12, 2022. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded acquittal of 3 journalists. The court adjourned the trial to October 19, 2022.

The trial of the case against journalist Beritan Canözer, for social media posts of an account that does not belong to her, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 4 on October 13, 2022. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded jail sentence up to 7 years and 6 months for Beritan Canözer. The court adjourned the trial to November 17, 2022.

(10/129) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The retrial of the case against Barış Barıştıran, former managing editor of Özgür Gün television channel which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 8 on October 12, 2022. The local court has acquitted Barış Barıştıran however the Penal Department No. 2 of Diyarbakır Regional Court has overturned the verdict. The court acquitted Barış Barıştıran once again.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 12, 2022 that, the indictment of Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office against 6 people who were detained in the police intervention to the justice watch held for ill prisoners on June 23, 2022 in Istanbul, is accepted by Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 10 on October 4, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for 6 people on the grounds of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The first trial will be held on March 2, 2023.

It is learned that the news report titled “Sakarya Military Garrison Command arrested for sexual abuse of 15 soldiers” published on Mezopotamya News Agency’s http://mezopotamyaajansi35.com website is banned to access by Sakarya Penal Court of Peace No. 1 on October 11, 2022.

(10/132) Trustee Appointment to Municipality in Afyon…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 12, 2022 that, the certificate of election of Gebeceler town mayor of central district of Afyon, Hüseyin Toğulluk, was cancelled due to the sentence he received on the charge of carrying weapons without a license, and that since the city council could not elect a new mayor, Deputy Governor Ali Rıza Çalışır was appointed to the municipality as a trustee.

(10/133) Journalist Banned from the Parliament…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 12, 2022, that journalist and Head of the Ankara Branch of the Journalists’ Union of Turkey (TGS) Sibel Hürtaş was not allowed into the Grand National Assembly by the police on the grounds that she was banned.
