(05/090) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage that 6 prisoners who are on a hunger strike in Konya Seydişehir T Type Prison since May 6, 2020, to demand an end to right violations, ended their strike on May 12, 2020, after their demands were accepted by prison administration and prisoners who had been put in solitary cells will be taken back to their wards.

(05/091) Child Was Subjected to Physical Violence of Municipality Police in Diyarbakır…

On May 12, 2020 a waste paper picker child in Sur district of Diyarbakır was subjected to physical violence of municipality police officers of Sur. It is learned that municipality police seized child’s handcart.

(05/092) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1281 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on May 12, 2020 at 13.30 and at 18.00, and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(05/093) Police Intervention to a Protest in Düzce…

On May 12, 2020, the police intervened the press declaration of Alev Şahin in order to regain her job from which she was dismissed by a state of emergency decree, in front of Düzce Governorate and detained her. Alev Şahin was released on the same day, after being fined for violating Law of Misdemeanour and Public Health Law.

(05/094) Police Intervention to Funeral of İbrahim Gökçek…

17 people including 2 lawyers and 1 apprentice lawyer who were detained in the police intervention against the funeral of Grup Yorum member İbrahim Gökçek who lost his life on May 7, 2020, at Gazi Cemevi in Sultangazi district of Istanbul on May 8, 2020; are released by the court with a ban on leaving the country on May 12, 2020.

Names of released people are: lawyer Didem Baydar Ünsal, lawyer Seda Şaraldı, apprentice lawyer Doğa İncesu, Tuğçe Tayyar, Bahar Ertürk, Cemil Kurt, Bahar Ertürk, Sevda Kurban, Rıdvan Akbaş, Fırat Kıl, Hasan Karapınar, Dilan Ekin, Beyhan Gün, Baki Can Işık, Serkan Yağız, Erkan Çimen.

(05/095) Gendarmerie Intervention to a Protest in Bursa…

The gendarmerie intervened residents of Kirazlıyayla village of Yenişehir district of Bursa, who had a protest to prevent the mining company cutting down the trees in village on May 12, 2020. It is learned that residents were forced into vehicles by gendarmerie officers and were forced out of the area where trees were planned to cut, and then were taken back to their village. Journalist Yusuf Kayışoğlu is detained for recording the intervention, and he is released on the same day after statement procedures. It is learned that 1 person was injured due to intervention.

Members of Association for Protection of Nature and Environment (DOĞADER) who came to support residents, were not allowed into the village.

(05/096) Investigation Against Journalists…

On May 12, 2020 Fatih Polat, executive editor and Görkem Kınacı, managing editor of Evrensel newspaper are called to give official statements to Istanbul Security Directorate Public Security Department, for the article of Ragıp Zarakolu, “No Escape of Ill-Fate”, published on Evrensel.

Communications Director Republic of Turkey Fahrettin Altun and President Tayyip Erdoğan have filed criminal complaint about the article which was published both on Evrensel and Artı Gerçek news portal.

(05/097) Hrant Dink Murder Case…

The case against 76 people (4 arrested) including security, national intelligence and gendarmerie personnel, on the grounds of being responsible and negligent on the murder of Hrant Dink, executive editor of Agos newspaper, is on May 12, 2020 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14.

Arrested defendants joined the trial via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court rejected to release arrested defendants and adjourned the trial to July 7-9, 2020.

(05/098) Ban of Event in Ankara…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 12, 2020 that the press declaration in front of Mining Monument in Çankaya district of Ankara on May 13, 2020, by Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions (DİSK), Confederation of Public Employees Unions (KESK), Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) and Turkish Medical Association (TTB), to commemorate 301 mine workers who died 6 years ago in a coal mine fire in Soma, is banned by Ankara Governorate on the grounds of precautions for Covid-19 pandemic.

(05/099) Official Announcement and Advertisement Ban on a Newspaper…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 12, 2020 that the Press Advertisement Agency has issued Evrensel newspaper with a ban on official announcements and advertisements for 5 days, for the article “Does government promise the citizens to be martyrs?” published on the newspaper. The reason of the ban is violation of Press Ethics Principles stated as “Journalism, which is a public service, cannot be used in defiance of public interest” and “Unfair allegation excessing limits of criticism cannot be allowed in publishing on persons, institutions and social strata”. It is also stated in the news reports that there is no investigation of prosecutor’s office against the article.

(05/100) Special Security Zone in Şırnak…

Şırnak Governorate made a declaration on May 11, 2020, and announced 11 rural areas with given coordinates in İdil district as special security zones as of May 11, 2020 until May 13, 2020.

(05/101) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 53 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,704 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on May 12, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 3,894 and total number of confirmed cases is 141,475 as of May 12, 2020.
