On March 13, 2026, 6 people including Ömer Günel, Mayor of Kuşadası district of Aydın, were detained through an Istanbul based investigation on allegations of ‘bribery’ and ‘extortion’. The names of those detained are: Ömer Günel, Ahmet Taşkan, Mustafa Burak Gündeş, Meral Celep, Ferdi Zenginoğlu, Hüseyin Kabasakal.

On March 12, 2026, 4 people including Republican People’s Party (CHP) district youth branch Chairperson Mustafa Kemal Koç are detained on the allegations of ‘insulting the President’ and ‘insulting a public officer’ for posters in Nazilli district of Aydın.
(03/065) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…
The final hearing of the retrial of the case against journalists Nazlı Ilıcak and Ahmet Hakan on the charge of ‘aiding an illegal organization without being a member’, which was reversed by the Court of Appeals, was held on March 12, 2026. The court sentenced Nazlı Ilıcak to 3 years and 9 months and Ahmet Altan to 4 years and 6 months.

The trial of the case against journalist Enver Aysever on the grounds of a social media post started on March 12, 2026 at Istanbul Küçükçekmece Criminal Court of First Instance No 30. Following the defenses, the court sentenced Enver Aysever to 10 months imprisonment on the charge of ‘inciting or insulting the public to hatred and hostility’ and released him on bail.
Enver Aysever was arrested on December 11, 2025.

On March 12, 2026, the trial of the case against 36 people who were detained during the police intervention against the 11th Istanbul Trans Pride March in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on June 22, 2025, continued at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 12. The indictment demands 36 people to be sentenced for violating Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations. Transgender individuals who testified at the hearing stated that they were detained and subjected to torture and ill-treatment during detention and in custody. The court lifted the ban on leaving the country for 2 people and adjourned the trial to October 9, 2026.

On March 12, 2026, the final trial of the case against Mısra Öz, who lost her son in the train crash in Çorlu district of Tekirdağ on July 8, 2018, is held at Çorlu Penal Court of First Instance No 3 on the grounds of the statement she made after the trial of the case on the accident.
The court acquitted Mısra Öz on the charge of ‘insulting a public officer for his duty’.

On March 12, 2026, it is learned from the news coverage of March 12, 2026 that, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu’s X social media account named “Presidential Candidate Office” is banned to access on the grounds of protection of national security and public order within the scope of Article 8/A of Law No 5651.
