(06/129) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of June 12, 2023 that the prisoners in Iğdır S Type Prison were subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the correction officers and that the lawyers who were in prison to visit their clients were threatened by the correction officers. Iğdır Bar Association stated the following: “About 10 correction officers walked on the colleagues, surrounded them and threatened our colleagues verbally and physically by saying, ‘Who are you, you are inciting the prisoners to revolt by agitating?’. In response to the warning of our colleagues to the correction officers that they should pay attention to their language, words such as ‘Who are you?’ were spoken (…) A criminal complaint was made to Iğdır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, a meeting was made with the Penitentiary Institution administration, an attempt was made to have a meeting with Iğdır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, but the call for a meeting was rejected. no response was given. In the ongoing process, many of our colleagues were informed that violence was applied to the detainees/convicts in the Iğdır Penitentiary Institution, moreover, it was learned that many of the victims hesitated to file complaints because they had fear from the correction officers, and petitions of prisoners were received by our bar association. These petitions were accepted as notice and forwarded to Iğdır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office”.

It is learned that the police prevented the picnic, which was planned to be held in İnciraltı City Forest as part of Pride Month, on June 13, 2023, by the students of İzmir Democracy University, on the grounds that there would be a protest, and detained 2 students (Selen Dendeş and Selman Yağmahan). Detained people were released on the same day after statement procedures at the police.

It is learned that Müşerref Geçer and Emrah Kılıç, the HDP co-mayors of Patnos district of Ağrı and the HR Director of the municipality Uğur Laçin and Rıza Doğaç and Erhan Yılmaz who were detained on June 9, 2023 in Ağrı were arrested by the court on the charge of ‘collusive tendering’ on June 13, 2023.

Lawyer Mustafa Taylan Savran who was detained in Istanbul on June 10, 2023 through an investigation on the Law Office of the Oppressed was released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on June 13, 2023.
Lawyer Gülhan Kaya who was detained in Izmir on June 9, 2023 was arrested by the court on June 12, 2023.

On June 13, 2023, HDP Bitlis provincial co-chair Berivan Birlik and the Greens and Left Future Party (YSP) provincial executive Mahmut Arukbağ were detained in house raids in Bitlis. The reason for detention could not be learned.

The Socialist Refoundation Party (SYKP) Mersin provincial co-chair Gülten Kotanoğlu was detained in a house raid on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on June 13, 2023.

15 of 18 people who were detained in Cizre district of Şırnak on June 9 and 10, 2023 were arrested by the court on June 13, 2023. 3 people were released provided that 1 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

HDP Party Assembly member Doğan Erbaş was detained in Ankara on June 13, 2023, on the grounds of a finalised sentence of 14 years 9 months and 22 days on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. It is learned that Doğan Erbaş will be taken to prison after the procedures at the police.

Çağla Seven, who was one of those injured in the Suruç bombing, was detained and handcuffed behind her back on street in Istanbul on June 12, 2023. Çağla Seven was released by the court on judicial control condition on June 13, 2023. The reason for detention could not be learned.

The final trial of the case against journalists Canan Coşkun and Barış Pehlivan over a news report they made is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 34 on June 13, 2023. The court acquitted 2 journalists.

The trial of the case against journalist Baransel Ağca over his social media posts is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on June 13, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Baransel Ağca on the charge of ‘insulting the President’. Baransel Ağca who lives abroad did not attend the trial. The court decided to wait for the letter of rogatory and adjourned the trial to July 7, 2023.

The trial of the case against three executives and one cartoonist of France-based Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine (publishing director Julin Serignac, executive editor Gerard Biard, editor-in-chief Laurent Sourisseau and cartoonist Alice Petit), for a cartoon about President Erdoğan on the cover page of the magazine, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on June 2, 2023. The court decided to wait for the letter of rogatory and adjourned the trial to December 7, 2023.

It is learned that Adana Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against lawyer Tugay Bek, upon the complaint of the Gendarmerie General Commander over his social media post reading “Distance yourself from criminal organisations” and that Tugay Bek made his official statement through the investigation at Adana Provincial Security Directorate on June 13, 2023.

The trial of the case against 3 people for the attack against a Cemevi and 2 Alevi institutions in Ankara on July 30, 2022 is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 15 on June 12, 2023. The court rejected to arrest 2 defendants, decided to continue detention of A. O.K. and adjourned the trial to June 7, 2023.

On June 13, 2023, 11 people were detained in operations in Manisa and Izmir; 1 person was detained in Elazığ, and 13 people were detained in operations covering 5 cities through an Ankara based investigation.
