Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya made a statement on July 13, 2023 and announced that 3 people lost their lives in the provinces of Giresun, Samsun and Zonguldak in the flood disaster that occurred as a result of heavy rainfall in the Western Black Sea region on July 10, 2023 and the following days.
(07/105) Journalist Subjected to Physical Violence of Police in Kars…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 12, 2023 that, journalist Serkan Çağlar was subjected to physical violence of a guard police named F. K. of the district governor in Kağızman district of Kars on July 11, 2023 and was injured as a result of the violence. Kağızman District Governorate’s Office made a declaration and stated the following: “The journalist was warned because he had entered the car park of our district governorate’s office to park his vehicle, and he was asked to take his vehicle out of the parking lot. However as he was resisting, the security officers intervened and took him to the district security directorate. The parties mutually filed complaints against each other. A judicial and administrative investigation has been initiated regarding the incident”.

It is learned that journalist Ayşe Sönmez who was reporting on July 12, 2023 in Ortaca district of Muğla at the funeral of a police officer named Hüseyin Tayfun Üçgül who was found dead in his car, was attacked by persons who was trying to prevent her from recording.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 12, 2023 that, in Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) L Type Prison No. 5 the food given to prisoners was inadequate and the prices at the prison commissary were high.
It is learned from the news coverage of July 13, 2023 that, in Izmir Aliağa Şakran Women’s Closed Prison, the clothes sent to prisoners were not given to them on the grounds of prison regulations, prisoners’ personal belongings were scattered around and some of them were seized during ward searches, and political prisoners were prevented from video call rights.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 13, 2023 that, in Izmir Aliağa Şakran Women’s Closed Prison, the prisoners were not taken to infirmary in case of medical need.
(07/109) Hunger Strike in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 12, 2023 that 7 prisoners (Özkan Yalçın, Mazlum Gök, Mehmet Halis Saykan, Cengiz Dere, Kadri Ezer, Azad Taş and Emrah Deniz) in Mersin Tarsus T Type Prison No. 2 started a hunger strike on July 9, 2023 to demand an end to right violations.

It is learned that the appeal made on July 13, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

17 of 20 people who were detained by the police intervening in the protest against power cuts in Viranşehir district of Urfa on July 9, 2023 were released by the court on judicial control conditions on July 13, 2023. 3 children who were also detained were released after statement procedures on July 10, 2023.

It is learned that 2 people (Resul Kaya and Abdullah Ekin) were detained in house raids in Bana village of Güçlükonak district of Şırnak on July 13, 2023. The reason for detention is unknown.

The final trial of the case against 14 people including the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) city council member in Akdeniz district of Mersin, on the grounds of being a member of the Democratic Free Women’s Movement, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on July 12, 2023. The court acquitted 14 people.

The retrial of the case against Professor Onur Hamzaoğlu, on the grounds of ‘publicly degrading the bodies of the state and the Grand National Assembly’ in a speech he gave as the Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) co-spokesperson in a rally in Adana on April 8, 2017, is held at Adana Penal Court of First Instance No. 25 on July 11, 2023, as the Penal Department No. 3 of the Court of Cassation has overturned the local court’s verdict of 5 months of sentence. The court acquitted Professor Onur Hamzaoğlu.

Siirt Governorate’s Office made a declaration on July 12, 2023 and banned all open-door meetings and demonstrations, mass gatherings and greetings, press declarations of the institutions outside of their buildings, sit-in protests, meetings, opening tents and stands, collecting petitions, commemorations, festivals, concerts, plays and so on for 15 days as of July 13, 2023.

It is learned that 9 people were detained in Istanbul on July 13, 2023.
