(01/101) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of January 12, 2021 that 3 prisoners (Hamza Arzuman, Reşit İlhan and Halil with unknown surname) were subjected to physical and psychological violence of the correction officers in Gümüşhane E Type Prison. Hamza Arzuman made a statement through his family and noted following: “We are subjected to ill-treatment of correction officers every day, because we are political prisoners. We are threatened by them every day. We cannot sleep at nights. They bang the doors early in the morning to make noise, they are operating a psychological war against us. We cannot get a wink of sleep. We are worried about life safety”.
It is learned from the news coverage of January 12, 2021 that, the heating system in Afyon T Type Prison No 1 cannot be used on the ground that it is out of order.
It is learned from the news coverage of January 12, 2021 that, Fırat Dari, a prisoner in Tokat Çamlıbel T Type Prison, was subjected to disciplinary proceedings on the grounds that he spoke Kurdish with his mother on the phone; and that he is being prevented from his phone right for 1 month as a disciplinary penalty.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 12, 2021 that 2 people (Mehmet İkincisoy and Faruk İkincisoy) who were detained in a house raid in Silvan district of Diyarbakır, were subjected to physical violence of gendarmerie during the raid.

Osman Şiban, who was thrown out of a helicopter after being detained in Van on September 11, 2020; and who is still under medical treatment for he was subjected to torture and ill-treatment; is detained in Mersin on January 12, 2021. Osman Şiban was released after a medical report was given at the hospital stating that he is not physically and psychologically in an available condition to make statement.

On January 12, 2021, 3 of 4 people who went to Istanbul Security Directorate to make their official statements through the investigation against them for participating in the protests at Boğaziçi University against the news rector appointed, are detained; and 1 person is released. The names of detained people are unknown and they were released on judicial control conditions after statement procedures on the same day.

8 of 22 people who were detained in Dargeçit district of Mardin on January 11, 2021; are released after statement procedures at the gendarmerie on January 12, 2021. It is learned that 14 people including a 3-months pregnant woman are still under custody.

On January 12, 2021, 3 people (Beyaz Coşkun, Yaşar Coşkun, Süleyman Durmaz) are detained in house raids in Hakkari. The reason of detention is unknown.

On January 12, 2021, 2 people (Mehmet İkincisoy and Faruk İkincisoy) are detained in house raids in Silvan district of Diyarbakır. The reason of detention is unknown.
(01/108) Mayor on Trial in Hakkari…
The final trial of the case against Hakkari co-mayor Cihan Karaman is held at Hakkari Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 12, 2021. Cihan Karaman was elected as Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-mayor and later he was suspended.
The court sentenced Cihan Karaman to 2 years and 1 month on the charge of ‘knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organisation without being a member of it’.
Cihan Karaman was detained on October 15, 2019 and was arrested by the court on October 17, 2019. Ministry of Interior appointed governor as a trustee to Hakkari Municipality on October 17, 2019.
(01/109) Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…
The trial of the case against İbrahim Çiçek, co-mayor of Yenişehir district, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 on January 12, 2021. İbrahim Çiçek was elected as HDP co-mayor of Yenişehir district of Diyarbakır but his certificate was not approved on the grounds that he was dismissed from his job by a state of emergency decree.
The indictment demands sentence for İbrahim Çiçek on the charge of ‘being an organisation member’.
İbrahim Çiçek joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. The court decided to consolidate the case to another case at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9. After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of İbrahim Çiçek and adjourned the trial to February 11, 2021.
İbrahim Çiçek was detained and arrested on August 14, 2021.
(01/110) HDP Executives on Trial in Diyarbakır…
The first trial of the case against HDP Diyarbakır provincial co-chairs Zeyyat Ceylan and Hülya Alökmen Uyanık, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on January 12, 2021.
The indictment demands sentence for Zeyyat Ceylan and Hülya Alökmen Uyanık on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.
Zeyyat Ceylan and Hülya Alökmen Uyanık joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of Zeyyat Ceylan and Hülya Alökmen Uyanık and adjourned the trial to March 23, 2021.
(01/111) Lawyer on Trial in Istanbul…
The trial of the case against lawyer Oya Aslan is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 on January 12, 2021.
The court decided to continue detention of Oya Aslan and adjourned the trial to April 1, 2021.
Oya Aslan was detained in Istanbul on December 20, 2019 and was arrested by the court on December 27, 2019.
(01/112) Efe Tektekin Case…
The trial of the case against police officer İ. A., for death of Efe Tektekin (5), due to being hit by an armoured police vehicle in Bağlar district of Diyarbakır on September 11, 2019, is held at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 9 on January 12, 2021.
The indictment demands sentence for İ. A. on the charge of reckless killing.
The court has sent a writ to Diyarbakır Provincial Directorate of Security to demand crime scene photographs, video footage of city surveillance cameras and video footage from the cameras inside the armoured vehicle at the previous trial. It is learned that Diyarbakır Provincial Directorate of Security sent scene photographs and video footage of city surveillance cameras but not the video footage from the cameras inside the armoured vehicle on the grounds that the camera was out of order. The court accepted intervention demand of Children Rights Center of Diyarbakır Bar Association and decided to send the photographs and videos to an expert for examination, and adjourned the trial to April 27, 2021.
(01/113) Official Announcement and Advertisement Ban on a Newspaper…
It is learned from the news coverage of January 12, 2021 that, the Press Advertisement Agency has issued Evrensel newspaper with a ban on official announcements and advertisements for 3 days, for a news report titled “Cumhuriyet newspaper is called to make official statement for the news report on the unlicensed villa construction”. It is reported that Evrensel newspaper was issued a ban of 68 days on official announcements and advertisements in the last one year.

Urfa Governorate made a declaration and announced that all meetings, demonstrations, marches, press declarations, interviews, camera recordings, holding banners, chanting slogans, recording videos and taking pictures with mobile phones, opening stands and any kind of action resembling protests are banned for 15 days as of January 12, 2021.

On January 12, 2021, 32 people are detained in operations covering 15 cities through an Istanbul based investigation; 74 people are detained in operations covering 33 cities through an Istanbul based investigation; 17 people are detained in operations covering 7 cities through a Niğde based investigation; 15 people are detained in house raids in Ankara and 10 people are detained through an Ankara based investigation.
(01/116) Covid-19 Pandemic…
The Ministry of Health declared that 171 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 983 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on January 12, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 9,809.
The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 23,152 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 2,346,285 as of January 12, 2021.
