(12/169) Person Shot in Istanbul for ‘Disobeying Stop Warning’…

Cihan Seyhan (17) died due to fire opened by the police on the grounds of disobeying stop warning in Ataşehir district of Istanbul on December 12, 2018. It is reported that 1 person (A.S.) in the car warned to stop was detained.

(12/170) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 12, 2018 that, Mehmet Kıran, Adana provincial executive of People’s Democratic Party (HDP), who is kept in Adana Kürkçüler F Type Prison was subjected to physical violence of the wardens for rejecting to be forced to strip search at the entrance of the prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 12, 2018 that, Sebahat Tuncel, co-chair of Democratic Regions Party (DBP) is given penalty of prohibition of attending activities for 10 months, by prison administration of Kandıra F Type Prison No 1, on the grounds that she attended indefinite hunger strike in prison to support Leyla Güven. HDP’s Hakkari MP and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven has started a hunger strike to demand an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 12, 2018 that 3 prisoners (Ahmet Alp, Haşim Gezer and Seyithan Yaman) are transferred under coercion from Mardin E Type Prison to Elazığ High Security Prison No 2. It is also stated in the news reports that Kokel Babat, a prisoner from Şırnak T Type Closed Prison is transferred to Trabzon Beşikdüzü T Type Closed Prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 12, 2018 that Emrah Nayci, who was wounded and captured in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in rural areas of Şırnak on October 31, 2018 and then was arrested by the court, is being kept in a solitary cell in Şırnak T Type Prison and is not taken to hospital for medical treatment.

(12/172) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 764 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on December 12, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on December 12, 2018, 2 people (Deniz Yılmaz and Umutcan Aybak) and at 18.00 2 people (Bengisu Demirel and Taylan Sungur) were detained.

Thus in total 4 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on December 12, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

Türkan Albayrak, who was dismissed from her job at Sarıyer district Health Department, on the grounds of ‘personnel security investigation’ and ‘archive search’, on August 3, 2018; made a press declaration to regain her job on December 12, 2018 and attempted for a sit-in protest in front of Health Department. The police intervened into the sit-in and detained Türkan Albayrak. It is learned that Türkan Albayrak was released the same day. It is the 59th time of detention of Türkan Albayrak.

(12/174) Detention of Members and Executives of HDP and Activists of TJA for Supporting HDP MP Leyla Güven’s Hunger Strike…

On December 12, 2018, the police raided People’s Democratic Party’s (HDP) Diyarbakır office where people have started a hunger strike to support HDP Hakkari MP and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven, who went on a hunger strike to protest isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and detained 50 people. It is also reported that 2 provincial executives of HDP are also detained at Diyarbakır Police Headquarters where they have been to get information about the detentions. The names of detainees are: Medya Kartal, Deniz Yıldız, Savaş Babur, Niyazi Erdoğan, Latif Eminoğlu, Gıyasettin Duman, Cemal Özdemir, Vahap Polat, Hüsnü Aslan, Kemal Baran, Nurettin Bakan, Nazım Öcal, Recep Yapsur,  Murat Yetişkin, Selahattin Kurt, Mehmet Taş, Kenan Kaydu, Alişan Binen, Abidin Karaman, Faruk Altun, Medeni Hazar, Fesih Balbay, Fatih Kağanaslan, Fahri Kaplan, Mehmet Yetişkin, Ercan Ceylancı, Sertip Yetiş, Salih Peksu, Şahin Kabaiş, Ali Yılmaz, Mehmet Yaman, M. Ali Altınkaynak, Murat Kılıç, Sakine Karadeniz, Şehmus Şenyiğit, M. Şirin Daşlık, Veli Mutlu, M. Şirin Karakaş, Ali Vural, Ramazan Sarı, Şefika Yürümeyen, Mensur Ekdemir, Ayten Fidan, Kadri Bilen, Reşat Ocaklık, Baran Kardaş, Dilan Yüce, Zeki Baran, Hacı Osman Noyan, Ramazan Kaval and Mustafa Akengin.

On December 12, 2018, 20 people who have started a hunger strike in Izmir to support HDP Hakkari MP and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven, are detained in house raids. The names of detainees known so far are:  Peace Mothers Assembly member Medine Kaymaz, HDP Urla district co-chair Abdulkerim Kaya, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Karabağlar district executive Meryem Çakmak, DBP Konak district executive Vasfi Özer, Ahmet Ceylan, İzzet Turhal, Vedat Sezer, Serkan Korkmaz, Dilan Akpolat, Ramazan Yavuz and Hediye Tekin.

25 people who were detained for going on a hunger strike to support HDP Hakkari MP and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven, on December 10, 2018, by the police raiding HDP’s Diyarbakır office, are released by the court on December 12, 2018. It is learned that 23 of them are released on judicial control conditions.

14 people, who were detained for the same reason on December 11, 2018, by the police raiding HDP’s Van office, are released on December 12, 2018 after statement procedures at the police.

(12/175) Detained Executives of HDP in Ankara…

HDP’s Ankara executives Abuzer Kısa and Eşref Özviran who were detained for social media posts in December 10, 2018, are released on judicial control conditions on December 12, 2018. Abuzer Kısa is released after procedures at the prosecutor’s office; Eşref Özviran is released by the court.

(12/176) Detained Executive of DBP in Adana…

Halit Şaşmaz, DBP Party Assembly member is detained in a house raid in Adana on December 12, 2018. The reason for detention is unknown.

(12 /177) The Cases Against Academics Who Are the Signatories of the Petition “We will not be a party to this crime!”…

The separate cases against 9 academicians (Güventürk Görgülü, Tuğçe Erçetin, Murat Paker, Orkun Doğan, Berrak Karahoda and Zeynep Altok from Bilgi University, Nermin Saybaşılı, Adil Emre Zeytinoğlu and Derya Fırat Şannan from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ are held on December 12, 2018. The court  adjourned 4 trials to March 13, 2019, and 5 trials to March 14, 2019. The court also issued a warrant for Adil Emre Zeytinoğlu in order to hear defence.

The separate cases against 11 academicians (Onur Buğra Kolcu from Arel University, E.D. from Işık university, Elif Çevik and Hazal Halavut from Boğaziçi University, Aytül Fırat from Kemerburgaz University, Ayşe Erzan from Istanbul Technical University, Nesrin Sungur Çakmak and Özdemir Aktan from Marmara University, Şahika Yüksel, Aslı Aydemir and Ayşe Rezan Tuncay from Istanbul University) for the same reason on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 32 are held on December 12, 2018. The court adjourned the trials of the cases against Hazal Halavut, Onur Buğra Kolcu, Elif Çevik and Aytül Fırat to April 4, 2019; and the trial of the case against E.D. to March 13, 2019. The court sentenced Aslı Aydemir, Şahika Yüksel, and Ayşe Rezan Tuncay to 1 year and 3 months each for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and deferred the announcement of the verdicts. The court sentenced Nesrin Sungur Çakmak, Ayşe Erzan and Ahmet Özdemir Aktan to 1 year and 3 months each for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and did not defer the announcement of verdict against them.

The separate cases against 3 academicians (Öget Öktem Tanör from Bilim University, Mustafa Oğuz Sinemillioğlu from Dicle University and Hakan Altun from Mersin University) for the same reason on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 30 are held on December 12, 2018. The court adjourned all three trials to April 3, 2019.

The separate cases against 3 academicians (Zeynep Verda İrtiş and Zeynep Savaşçın from Galatasaray University and Nuray Mert from Istanbul University) for the same reason on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 are held on December 12, 2018. The court sentenced Nuray Mert, Zeynep Savaşçın and Zeynep Verda İrtiş to 1 year and 3 months each for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

(12/178) The Case Against Boğaziçi University Students…

The case against 7 students of Boğaziçi University, for holding a press declaration about detention of students who protest Turkish delight serving at the school campus to celebrate Afrin operation of Turkish Armed Forces, with banners saying “No celebration delight for massacre”, on the charge of ‘opposing to the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’, is held on December 12, 2018. The court decided that 2 students will be brought to the court forcibly for the next trial which is adjourned to March 27, 2019.

(12/179) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On December 12, 2018, 1 person is detained on a warrant issued, in Niğde.

22 of 41 people including military members on active duty, who were detained through an Istanbul based investigation, are arrested by the court on December 12, 2018.

The final trial of the case against Muhammet Karahan, a former police chief who was dismissed by a state of emergency decree, is held on Kırıkkale Heavy Penal Court No 2 on December 12, 2018. The court sentenced the defendant to 6 years and 3 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’; to 11 years and 3 months for ‘violating the confidentiality of communication’ and to 6 years and 3 months for ‘forgery of official documents’.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 12, 2018 that, Soma Mekansızlar Drama Group’s play “Para ile Satılmaz”, which depicts the mine blast in Soma where 301 mine mineworkers died, is banned by soma sub-governorate to be staged at Soma Municipality Wedding Hall.

(12/182) Prevention of a Concert in Adana…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 12, 2018 that the concert of musicians from Mezopotamya Cultural Center, which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is not permitted by Adana Governorate on the grounds of “public order and safety and safety of life and property of individuals”.

(12/183) Special Security Zone in Bingöl…

Bingöl Governorate made a declaration on December 12, 2018 and announced 26 areas with given coordinates in central, Adaklı, Genç, Kiğı, Yedisu, Karlıova and Solhan districts as special security zones from December 11 to December 25, 2018.
