The Ministry of National Defence declared that 1 soldier (Hakan Bali) died in an attack of HPG militants to a military base in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on August 12, 2021.
(08/113) Flood in Kastamonu and Sinop…
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) declared that the flood hitting several provinces in Western Black Sea region on August 11, 2021 killed 31 people as of August 13, 2021. The number of deceased people is 29 in Kastamonu and 2 in Sinop while 1 person is missing in Bartın.
(08/114) Child Got Wounded by Fire Opened from Syria in Urfa…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 12, 2021 that, a 3-year-old child (T. D.) in Ceylanpınar district of Urfa, has got wounded at the head by a fire reported to be opened from Serekaniye city of Syria on August 10, 2021. It is learned that T. D. is in life-critical condition and under treatment in hospital.
(08/115) Person Forced to be a Police Informant in Batman…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 12, 2021 that, a person named Metin Kızmaz (18) has been forced to be a police informant three times so far.
Metin Kızmaz stated the following to the press: “The police officers stopped me in the back streets of Şafak neighbourhood two times, and they kept me there saying ‘You should help us so that we would help you’. They said ‘We will see you more often’ to threaten me since I rejected them. The same police officers came to my workplace one day, got into there with their walkies on their hands. Then they took me to one side, and wanted me to give testimony against persons that I have never seen before.”
(08/116) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 12, 2021 that, Kurbani Özcan, a prisoner in Diyarbakır T Type Prison got wounded as he was subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the correction officers. It is also stated in the news reports that he was being kept in a solitary cell and being threatened by the correction officers saying ‘you will leave here as a dead person’. Kurbani Özcan’s mother Gülan Özcan states the following to the press: “The correction officers and other officers of prison administration have beaten my son with clubs and kicks. He has several wounds, and had 25 stitches on his body. The correction officers have walked my son out around the prison and then put him in a solitary cell. They have said ‘You will leave here as a dead person’ to my son.” A prison officer who was called by the journalists rejected the claims and stated the following: “There is no solid evidence stated by them. None of the correction officers has been punished as a result of disciplinary proceedings for these allegations. The prisoner usually brings these claims forward but these are baseless claims.”

It is learned that the appeal made on August 12, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s family and lawyers in order to visit their client was not responded.
(08/118) Detained People in Urfa for Participating in a Protest…
It is learned that 18 people who were called to make their official statements through the investigation on a protest are detained at Urfa Provincial Gendarmerie Command on August 11, 2021. The investigation was launched against the demonstration to protest Dicle Electricity Distribution company for power cuts and heavy electricity bills in Haliliye district of Urfa.

7 people who were detained in Kars on August 10, 2021 are released by the court on judicial control conditions on August 12, 2021.

On August 12, 2021, 12 people are detained in house raids in Antep. The reason of detention and the names of detained people are unknown.
(08/121) Journalist on Trial in Van…
The final trial of the case against Jinnews agency reporter Hikmet Tunç, on the grounds of insulting Harun Yücel, the trustee appointed to Muradiye district municipality, is held at Muradiye Penal Court of First Instance on August 12, 2021. The case was opened upon Harun Yücel’s complaint for the news report titled “Muradiye Waterfall was given away for 4,5 million and it is abandoned now”, published on May 13, 2019. The court sentenced Hikmet Tunç to 8 months and 22 days and deferred the announcement of the verdict.
(08/122) Newspaper Employee on Trial in Adana…
The final trial of the case against İbrahim Karakaş, an employee of Yeni Yaşam newspaper, is held at Adana Heavy Penal Court No 11 on August 12, 2021.
İbrahim Karakaş joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. The court sentenced İbrahim Karakaş to 9 years and 9 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, and decided to continue detention of him.
İbrahim Karakaş was arrested on November 6, 2020.
(08/123) Covid-19 Pandemic…
The Ministry of Health declared that 138 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 22,261 as of August 12, 2021.
The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 52,701 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 6,018,485 as of August 12, 2021.
