(01/108) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defense (MSB) announced that 9 soldiers (Gökhan Delen, Serkan Sayin, Müslüm Özdemir, Kemal Batur, Emrullah Gülmez, Hakan Gün, Ahmet Köroğlu, Murat Atar, Muhammed Tunahan Evcin) died and 4 soldiers were wounded in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants on January 12, 2024, during the Pençe-Kilit operation in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (IKBY).

It is learned from the news coverage of January 12, 2024, that prisoners in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison were pressured to end the hunger strike and their personal belongings were seized during ward searches.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 15, 2024, that Emin Güler, a 94 percent disabled and ill prisoner in Urfa T Type Prison No 2, was transferred to Erzincan L Type Prison against his will.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 12, 2024, that Maşallah Dekak, Rudaw TV representative and member of Güneydoğu Journalists Association, who was covering the news coverage of DEVA Party Chair Ali Babacan’s visit to Diyarbakır, was subjected to verbal and physical assault of a person.

On January 12, 2024, 5 members of Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Parti) Youth Assembly (Şilan Nergiz, Maruf Çeliker, Celal Döner, Emrah Bozkurt and Devrim Çakır) were detained in Korkut district of Muş. The reason for the detention could not be learned.

Labour Party (EMEP) Istanbul Provincial Chair Sema Barbaros was detained on January 15, 2024 in Istanbul on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’.

Antalyaspor football team player Sagiv Jehezkel, an Israeli citizen, was detained due to provoking the public to hatred, hostility’ on January 14, 2024 during the match against Trabzonspor on the grounds that he celebrated a goal by showing his bandage with the inscription “100 days, October 7”. The footballer was released after statement procedures.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 13, 2024, that 113 people are detained in operations covering 32 cities on the grounds of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘financing an illegal organization’.

The Ministry of Justice announced on January 13, 2024, that an investigation was initiated against 110 people who posted on social media on January 12, 2024, about the death of 9 soldiers during the Pençe-Kilit operations in IKBY, on the charges of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ and ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ and that 4 people were arrested.

On January 12, 2023, activist Yusuf Alkım, who came to Istanbul from Cyprus to attend the International Lenin Symposium, was detained at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. It is reported that Yusuf Alkım’s lawyer could not reach him for a long time. It is learned that Yusuf Alkım was released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on January 13, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 13, 2024, that the acquittal verdict of Konya Heavy Penal Court No 4 for 10 defendants in the racist attack in Hasanköy neighbourhood of Meram district of Konya on July 30, 2021, in which 7 members of Dedeoğulları family died, was overturned by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Court of Cassation.

The trial of the case against journalist Yağmur Kaya, upon the complaint of retired soldier Musa Çitil, for her interview with IHD Co-Chair Eren Keskin, was held at Aydın Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 11, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for Yağmur Kaya on the charge of ‘targeting people who took part in the fight against terrorism’. The court decided not to hear Eren Keskin as a witness and adjourned the trial to February 27, 2024.

(01/119) Journalists, Lawyers and Party Members on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 23 people, including Law Office of the Oppressed lawyers Sezin Uçar, Özlem Gümüştaş, Gülhan Kaya and Ali Haydar Doğan, Etkin News Agency (ETHA) news director İsminaz Temel, reporter Havva Cuştan and Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) members and executives continued on January 11, 2024 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 27. The prosecutor demanded a sentence for 23 people on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to April 4, 2024.

The trial of the case against Halise Aksoy, who was arrested on April 25, 2023, on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’, continued on January 12, 2024 at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10. The court decided to continue the detention of Halise Aksoy and adjourned the trial to April 19, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 12, 2024, that some news reports dated 1998 on https://www.sabah.com.tr, https://www.ntv.com.tr and https://www.hurriyet.com.tr were banned to access by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 10 on December 27, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 12, 2024 that, the news report on https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr, about the allegation that Boğaziçi University rector disclosed personal data of students and faculty members to consultancy companies, was banned to access by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1 on January 11, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 13, 2024, that news reports about an Azerbaijani businessperson on https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr, https://haberglobal.com.tr and https://www.demokrathaber.org were banned to access by Istanbul Bakırköy Criminal Peace Judgeship No. 3 on January 12, 2024.
