(09/086) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 11, 2023 that, Nedim Öztürk, who was on indefinite hunger strike since April 24, 2023 demanding an end to right violations and to be transferred to another prison from Ankara Sincan F Type Prison No. 2, has ended his strike on its 138th day as he was transferred to Ankara Sincan L Type Prison on September 8, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 12, 2023 that, a prisoner named Serpil Cabadan was transferred under coercion from Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison to another prison which could not be learned.

(09/088) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on September 12, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(09/089) Gendarmerie Intervention to Defenders in Muğla…

The gendarmerie intervened in the rights defenders and residents protesting the tree felling for a lignite mine intended to be established in Akbelen Forest in Milas district of Muğla, on September12, 2023 and detained 1 person (Ahmet Tatar). It is reported that the gendarmerie also seized the tents and other materials used by the people and loaded them onto a truck to deliver them to the General Directorate of Forestry.

(09/090) Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The retrial of the case against Diyarbakır co-mayor Selçuk Mızraklı is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 9 on September 11, 2023 as the Penal Department No. 3 of the Court of Cassation has overturned the 9 years 4 months and 15 days of jail sentence given on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. Selçuk Mızraklı joined the trial via sound and vision system. It is learned that a new indictment was prepared against Selçuk Mızraklı based on a witness statement at the hearing. After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of Selçuk Mızraklı and adjourned the trial to November 29, 2023.

(09/091) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalist Ercan Aktaş is held at Istanbul Bakırköy Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on September 11, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Ercan Aktaş on the charges of ‘discouraging people from military service’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. Ercan Aktaş who lives abroad did not join the trial. The court decided to await the response to the letter written for Ercan Aktaş’s statement to be taken abroad and adjourned the trial to January 24, 2024.

(09/092) DBP Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Diyarbakır provincial co-chair Hayrettin Altun is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 5 on September 12, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Hayrettin Altun on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court acquitted Hayrettin Altun.

Hayrettin Altun was detained on December 23, 2023 and was arrested by the court on December 27, 2022. He was released from prison by the court at the first trial held on February 2, 2023.

The final trial of the case against lawyer Tonguç Cankurt, for using the expression “flagitious attack” in the criminal complaint regarding the police intervention in the commemoration of the October-10 Massacre, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court no. 36 on September 12, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Tonguç Cankurt on the charge of ‘insulting a public official’. The court decided to acquit the lawyer.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 11, 2023 that, a proceeding demanding lift of impunity of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Diyarbakır MP was sent to the Grand National Assembly.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 12, 2023 that Mezopotamya News Agency editor Bilal Güldem was targeted and threatened for sharing a video of children being taken to prayer in Batman.

(09/096) Ban of Access to Web Contents…

It is learned that the news reports about an academic for whom a harassment complaint was filed, published on https://www.evrensel.nethttps://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr, https://www.gazeteduvar.com.tr websites were banned to access on the grounds of violations of personal rights by Rize Penal Court of Peace on September 6, 2023.

(09/097) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

8 of 9 people who were detained in Izmir are arrested by the court on September 11, 2023 while 1 person was released on judicial control conditions.
