(05/090) Person Died by Police Fire in Izmir…

On May 11, 2023, a person named Semih Güler lost his life when the police coming over a report in Konak district of Izmir; opened fire on the grounds of ‘disobeying stop warning’ and ‘resistance to the police’. Izmir Governorate’s Office stated the following: “At around 20.30 on 11.05.2023, a police team was dispatched to the specified address upon receiving a report of a domestic violence incident. When the police team arrived at the scene, the suspect S.G. was seen on the balcony of his residence beating a woman and the police team tried to persuade the suspect to end the incident and leave the residence, the suspect S.G. entered the residence and went out to the balcony with a shiny object in his hand. Thereupon, police officer F.Y., evaluating that the bright object in his hand might be a weapon, he fired two shots into the air for a warning. As a result of the gunfire, the suspect S.G. was injured in the head area and died in the hospital where he was taken, despite all the interventions. Police Officer F.Y. was detained and a judicial and administrative investigation was initiated regarding the incident.”

It is learned that 4 people who were detained in relation to the attack on May 7, 2023 on the rally of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Erzurum with stones which injured 17 people, were released by the court on May 11, 2023 provided that 2 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

(05/092) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on May 11, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(05/093) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalists Can Bursalı, Barış Terkoğlu, Barış Pehlivan and Nevzat Çiçek, upon the complaint of the President Erdoğan’s former lawyer Mustafa Doğan İnal, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on May 11, 2023. It is learned that the court decided to continue the case with 3 other cases at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 49, Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 46 and Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 14 and adjourned the trial to November 2, 2023.

Etkin News Agency reporter Pınar Gayıp who went to Eskişehir Public Prosecutor’s Office to make her official statement through an investigation against her on May 12, 2023, is released on judicial control conditions by the court after statement procedures.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 12, 2023 that, Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against journalist Merdan Yanardağ on the grounds of ‘disseminating misleading information’ over his social media post about the allegations of assassination against CHP chair.

The first trial of the case against Cumhuriyet newspaper’s editor-in-chief Mustafa Büyüksipahi and the responsible manager Mustafa Birol Güger, upon the complaint of the Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank, over an article in the newspaper which was to be held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on May 11, 2023 was postponed to November 7, 2023 due to workload.

(05/097) People on Trial…

The first trial of the case against 42 people who were detained by the police intervening in the Ankara Pride March, is held on May 11, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 42 people on the charges of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’, ‘insult’, ‘injury’, ‘resisting to prevent public duty’. The defendants described the torture and ill-treatment they were subjected to during detention. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial.

The trial of the case against the Democratic Regions party (DBP) Diyarbakır provincial co-chair Seval Gülmez is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 8 on May 12, 2023. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to September 13, 2023.

(05/099) Security Officer on Trial for Death of Mehmet Uytun…

On October 9, 2009, a 16 month-old baby Mehmet Uytun, has been shot by a gas bomb shell which was used by the security officers intervening a protest, while he was on the balcony of his house in Cizre district of Şırnak. The trial of the case against specialized sergeant H. A. is held at Cizre Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 on May 11, 2023. The court decided to send the case file to the Cizre Heavy Penal Court on Duty in order to evaluate whether the crime was within the scope of ‘possible intentional killing’.

(05/100) Prison Massacre Case…

The trial of the case against 196 people who were on duty at Gendarmerie General Command during “Operation Back to Life”, which caused death of 12 people and injury of 29 in Bayrampaşa Prison, is held on Bakırköy Heavy Penal Court No. 13 on May 11, 2023. The operation which killed 32 people in 20 prisons in total was conducted to enable conversion of the prisons to F Type prisons and to end hunger strikes in prisons on December 19, 2000. It is learned that Sadettin Tantan, the Interior Minister back then who were called for witness statement did not join the trial without excuse. The court adjourned the trial to October 5, 2023.

(05/101) Sivas Massacre Case…

The trial of the 3 fugitive defendants (Eren Ceylan, Murat Sonkur and Murat Karataş) whose files were separated in the Sivas Massacre case is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 1 on May 11, 2023. The court decided to continue the arrest warrant for the three defendants and adjourned the trial to September 14, 2023.
