(05/079) People Died in Şırnak…

On May 4, 2022, 2 people (Hüseyin Öner and Ömer Kaya) were found dead in the rural areas of İdil district of Şırnak. It is learned from the news coverage of May 11, 2022 that, an organisation named YPS took responsibility of the death of 2 people.

(05/080) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 11, 2022 that, 2 militants died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in Zap area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government in April, 2022.

(05/081) Abducted Person in Ankara…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 11, 2022, that a person named Berşan Erdoğan was abducted in Ankara in April and was released on the same day after being subjected to torture and other ill-treatment.

Bersan Erdoğan stated the following at the press conference held at the Human Rights Association Ankara office: “Last month, a vehicle approached me on the street where my house is located (…) and the people inside forced me into the car. They told me that the events I participated in were criminal and that if I participated in other events and activities from now on, they would torture me. However, I was quite clear and straight against them. So they started beating me and then they let me go. A month after the kidnapping, the same people started calling me on the phone and said, ‘You can come yourself with ease or we will pick you up from the street as usual. We will not give you any rest,’ and threatened me.”

It is learned from the news coverage of May 11, 2022 that, Gökhan Kaya, a prisoner in Ankara Sincan F Type Prison No 1 is on hunger strike since April 14, 2022, demanding to be transferred to another prison.

(05/083) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the press declaration held in front of Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul on May 11, 2022, to support Sibel Balaç and Gökhan Yıldırım, who are on hunger strike in prison, and detained 6 people (Erkan Yıldırım, Feridun Osmanağaoğlu, Hasan Basri Yıldız, Nergis Doğru, Urhan Şahin and Ömer Sarsılmaz). 6 people are released on same day after statement procedures.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on May 11, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(05/085) Detained People and Investigated People in Mardin for Newroz Celebrations…

On May 11, 2022, 10 people are detained in house raids in Kızıltepe district of Mardin, on the grounds of participating in Newroz celebrations.

It is also learned that an investigation was launched against 7 members of the organisation committee for Newroz celebrations in Kızıltepe and that those people made their official statements at the District Security Directorate on May 11, 2022.

The final trial of the case against CHP chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, for his group speeches on March 23 and 30, 2021, is held at Ankara Civil Court of First Instance No 31 on May 11, 2022. The court sentenced Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu to pay the President 30,000 Turkish Liras for non-pecuniary damage.

The trial of the case against the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA) founder member Metin Gürcan is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 26 on May 11, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Metin Gürcan up to 20 years on the charge of ‘espionage’.

The court decided to release Metin Gürcan and adjourned the trial. It is learned that the prosecutor objected the court’s decision of release.

(05/088) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalists Osman Akın and Veysi Sarısözen is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 on May 11, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for 2 journalists on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The court adjourned the trial to September 9, 2022.

The trial of the case against Yeni Yaşam newspaper reporter Hatice Şahin is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on May 11, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for Hatice Şahin on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court adjourned the trial to September 19, 2022.

(05/090) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against journalist Rojin Altay who was detained during news reporting and 2 children is held at Istanbul Anadolu Juvenile Court No 1 on May 11, 2022. The court acquitted 3 people.

(05/091) Lawyers on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against 18 lawyers for the protest held in front of Istanbul Bar Association on September 15, 2015, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 36 on May 11, 2022.

The court acquitted 6 lawyers (Banu Güveren Aslan, Baran Doğan, Ercan Kanar, Gökmen Yeşil, Mustafa Rüzgar and Onur Şahin Kaya), sperataed the case against 11 lawyers (Ramazan Demir, Hüseyin Boğatekin, Sinan Zincir, Şerafettin Can Atalay, Güray Dağ, Avni Güçlü, Sezin Uçar, Diren Yeşil, Neziha Eken, Mehmet Ümit Erdem, Naciye Demir) and dropped the case against Ebru Timtik.

(05/092) Ban of Demonstration in Antep…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 11, 2022 that, the demonstration of DEVA Party which was to be held in Antep on May 21, 2022, is not permitted by the Governorate’s Office.

DEVA Party Chair Ali Babacan claimed that the Governorate’s office first approved the application for the demonstration, but then this decision was changed, and stated the following: “We have made an application to the Governorate’s Office to hold our demonstration at Democracy Square in Gaziantep. On April 29, the governor notes the application as ‘appropriate’. And our friends made announcements. But on May 2, they added ‘not’ right before ‘appropriate’.”

DEVA Party Deputy Chair Mehmet Emin Ekmen stated the following: “We made an official application on April 29 and this application was accepted. Thereupon, on the first day of Eid holiday, on May 2, we announced our demonstration to the public as we were doing the holiday greetings. Only 30 minutes after this announcement, a phone call from the Governorate’s Office, we were informed that the area was not considered appropriate (…) and we saw that they retracted the previous decision by falsifying the previously approved documents and making an annulment decision.”

It is learned that Antep Governorate’s Office, which rejects the allegations, will file a criminal complaint on the subject.

It is learned that 3 articles about the cocaine load captured in Mersin Port, published on https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr and https://www.birgun.net websites are banned to access on the grounds of ‘violation of personal rights’, by Mersin Penal Court of Peace No 3 on May 10, 2022.

It is learned that Etkin News Agency’s website https://www.etha39.com is banned to access on the grounds of ‘protection of national security and public order’ by Diyarbakır Penal Court of Peace No 4 on May 11, 2022.

(05/094) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On May 11, 2022, 24 people are detained in operations covering 2 cities through a Konya based investigation.

(05/095) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 9 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 1,670 as of May 11, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 98,870 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 15,048,399 as of May 11, 2022.
