(01/085) Asylum Seeker Died in Racist Attack in Istanbul…

It is learned that, a group of Syrian asylum seekers’ house in Bayrampaşa district of Istanbul was raided by a racist group on January 11, 2022 and Nail Elnaif, a 19-year-old Syrian asylum seeker who was stabbed while sleeping lost his life. It is reported that 8 people are detained in relation to the attack.

One witness stated the following to the press: “They were 5 young Syrians, living together. The attackers wearing face masks, have first broken the camera outside, and then went in the building. They have said they were police officers as they knock the door, and the young Syrians have opened the door. The attackers, having clubs and knives in their hands, and even one have a police walkie-talkie, have beaten the residents. The young man, Nail who was stabbed at the chest to death while he was sleeping, has just came to Turkey.”

(01/086) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 11, 2022 that, the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) chair Leyla Güven was threatened by a correction officer in Elazığ Women’s Closed Prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 11, 2022 that, Hogir Batu, who is on hunger strike to demand an end to right violations in Iğdır S Type Closed Prison was subjected to physical violence of the correction officers. It is also claimed in the news reports that the correction officers were asking “Did not you kill yourself yet?” to Hogir Batu.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 11, 2022 that 2 prisoners (Velat Aydın and Süleyman Alıkan) were subjected to physical violence of the correction officers in Diyarbakır F Type Prison and one of them was admitted to hospital as he got wounded. It is reported that phone conversations of these two prisoners with their families were interrupted while they start talking about the violence they have been subjected to.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 11, 2022 that, in Kayseri Bünyan Women’s Prison, Kurdish books and letters sent to prisoners were not given to them on the grounds of lack of translator in prison, the number of books per prisoner is limited to 10, the newspapers demanded by prisoners were not given to them and the food given to prisoners is not nutritive and hygienic.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 11, 2022 that, the letter of Selda Karataş, a prisoner in Kocaeli Gebze Women’s Prison, sent to a journalist about her case, was censored by prison administration on the grounds that a judge’s name was mentioned.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 11, 2022 that, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş’s book Efsun, was not given to Mustafa Taştan, a prisoner in Bolu F Type Prison. It is learned that although there was no ban on the book, the prison administration stated that the book “may jeopardize the penal institution’s security due to obscenity.”

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on January 11, 2022 at 13.30 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

On January 11, 2022, Cemal Aslan, city council member from HDP in Gürpınar district of Van and Mustafa Kuşman are detained, the reason of detention is unknown.

Mehmet Türkmen, chair of the United Textile Weaving and Leather Workers’ Union is detained on the grounds of social media posts in Antep on January 11, 2022. Mehmet Türkmen is released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on the same day.

(01/092) Detained People in Şırnak…

24 people were detained in house raids in İdil and Cizre districts of Şırnak and in Siirt, through a Şırnak based investigation on January 9 and 10, 2022. It is learned that 2 people were arrested by the court on January 11, 2022 and 3 people are released on judicial control conditions. 3 people have been released earlier while 16 people are still under custody.

(01/093) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Mezopotamya News Agency reporters Sadık Topaloğlu and Sadiye Eser is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 22 on January 11, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for 2 journalists on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The court decided to continue the ban on leaving the country for 2 journalists and adjourned the trial to May 12, 2022.

(01/094) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The retrial of the case against Barış Barıştıran, former managing editor of Özgür Gün television channel which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 on January 11, 2022. The local court has acquitted Barış Barıştıran however the Penal Department No 2 of Diyarbakır Regional Court has reversed the verdict. The court adjourned the trial to February 17, 2022.

(01/095) Journalists and Other People on Trial in Antalya…

The trial of the case against 15 people including journalists Eylem Sonbahar and Sema Karakurt, who were detained by the police as they were reporting on a demonstration in Antalya on November 15, 2015, is held at Antalya Heavy Penal Court of First Instance No 7 on January 11, 2022.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded acquittal of 13 people and separation of the cases against 2 people. The court adjourned the trial to February 15, 2022.

The trial of the case against HDP Batman MP Feleknas Uca, for her declarations in 2015 and 2016, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on January 11, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to April 26, 2022.

The first trial of the case against HDP Şırnak provincial co-chair Sabuha Akdağ is held at Silopi Penal Court of First Instance No 1 on January 11, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Sabuha Akdağ on the charge of ‘inciting hatred and hostility among public’.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to June 14, 2022.

The first trial of the case against 2 executives of the Left Party, for participating in a press declaration in Istanbul on May 28, 2021, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance on January 11, 2022. The court acquitted 2 people.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 12, 2022 that, a proceeding demanding lift of impunity of HDP Diyarbakır MP Semra Güzel is submitted to Grand National Assembly.

On January 11, 2022, 143 people are detained in operations covering 40 cities through an Izmir based investigation and 18 people are detained in operations covering 26 cities through an Ankara based investigation.

(01/101) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 137 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 74,266 as of January 11, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 83,980 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 10,117,954 as of January 11, 2021.
