(02/101) Journalist Detained in Mersin…

Journalist Sami Yılmaz is detained on February 12, 2025 in Mersin through an Urfa based investigation. It is learned that Sami Sezgin will be taken to Urfa. The reason for detention could not be learned.

(02/102) Detained Political Party and Trade Union Executives and Other People in Ankara…

On February 12, 2025, 8 people including Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Party Assembly member Pakize Sinemillioğlu and former chair of United Transport Workers Union (BTS) Nazım Karakurt are detained in house raids in Ankara on the grounds of making propaganda for an illegal organisation on social media accounts and events they attended. The names of the other detainees could not be learned.

On February 12, 2025, 18 people including Cevdet Yıldız, co-mayor candidate of DEM Party, are detained in house raids in Salihli district of Manisa on the allegations of ‘making propaganda of an illegal organization’ for Newroz celebrations last year. The names of the detainees could not be learned.

(02/104) Detained People in an Urfa Based Investigation…

On February 12, 2025, 7 people are detained in house raids in Urfa, Van and Şırnak through an Urfa based investigation on the allegations of ‘being an illegal organization member’. The names of the detainees could not be learned.

(02/105) Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor on Trial…

The indictment prepared against Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu for his remarks about Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor was accepted by Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court on February 12, 2025. The indictment demands sentence on charges of ‘publicly insulting a public official because of his duty’, ‘threatening’, ‘targeting people who took part in the fight against terrorism’. The first hearing of the case will be held on April 11, 2025.

(02/106) Journalist on Trial in Izmir…

The first trial of the case against journalist Delal Akyüz started on February 12, 2025 at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 13. The indictment demands sentence for Delal Akyüz on the charge of ‘being an illegal organization member’. The court decided to lift the judicial control measure of house arrest against Delal Akyüz and adjourned the trial to May 12, 2025.

(02/107) Lawyer on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against lawyer Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı continued on February 12, 2025 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26. The indictment demands sentence for Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı on the charge of ‘being an illegal organization member’. The court released Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı with a ban on leaving the country and adjourned the trial to May 13, 2025.

Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı was detained on February 6, 2024 and was arrested by the criminal court of peace.

On February 11, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of February 11, 2025 that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment against Cem Aydın, chair of Republican People’s Party (CHP) Youth Branches, for his social media post about Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor. The indictment demands sentence for Cem Aydın on the charges of ‘publicly insulting a public officer because of his duty’ and ‘targeting people who took part in the fight against terrorism’.

(02/109) Nihat Kazanhan Case…

The retrial of the case on the killing of Nihat Kazanhan (12, m) in Cizre district of Şırnak by police fire, following the Constitutional Court’s ruling on violation of the right to life, continued on February 12, 2025 at Cizre Heavy Penal Court No 1. The court decided to wait for the arrest warrant for the defendant and adjourned the trial to April 30, 2025.

(02/110) Investigation Against Journalist in Ankara…

It is learned that Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against BirGün reporter Mustafa Mert Bildircin for his news report on Directorate of Religious Affairs and that the journalist gave his official statement at Çankaya Police Station in Ankara on February 11, 2025.

(02/111) Investigation Against Lawyers in Ankara…

On February 11, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of February 11, 2025 that Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against 18 lawyers, for a press declaration in Ankara, to protest lawyer Can Atalay’s not being released from prison despite being elected as an MP in June 8, 2023 elections.

(02/112) Ban on Events and Protests in Provinces…

Governorate of Van made a declaration on February 11, 2025 and announced that press declarations, sit-ins, surveys, opening/setting up tents and stands, organizing petitions, distributing leaflets, brochures and flyers and all kinds of protests, as well as the entry of vehicles and individuals who will come collectively or individually to participate in these actions and activities to the provincial borders are banned for 6 days between February 11, 2025 and February 16, 2025.
