(03/111) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 12, 2022 that LGBTI+ prisoners M. G. and C. K. in Mersin Iskenderun Prison were subjected to forced haircut and they were subjected to torture and ill-treatment. It is also stated in the news reports that LGBTI+ prisoners C. K. and N. U. Were subjected to sexual assault of another prisoner (H. A.) and they were psychologically oppressed to take their complaints back and were kept in solitary cells.

It is learned from the news coverage March 12, 2022 that social and sports rights of prisoners are prevented in Istanbul Maltepe L Type Prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 13, 2022 that, in Izmir Şakran Prison, 30 prisoners are kept in a ward where 6 prisoners have to sleep on the floor.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 12, 2022 that, LGBTI+ prisoners (Ş. K., E. Ö., M. E., M. G.) in Mersin Iskenderun T Type Prison were not referred to hospitals.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 12, 2022 that, prisoners in Istanbul Maltepe L Type Prison were not referred to doctor and to dentist.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on March 11, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(03/114) Police Intervention to Doctor’s Day Event in Istanbul…

The police intervened members of Istanbul Medical Chamber who gathered to hold a press declaration about their demands to place a wreath on Atatürk Monument at Taksim Square of Istanbul, on the doctor’s day March 14, 2022.

(03/115) Detained HDP Members in Van…

On March 12, 2022, 3 members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) are detained in Van. The reason of detention is unknown.

(03/116) Kemal Kurkut Case…

It is learned that the Penal Department No 1 of Diyarbakır Regional Court has finalised the appeal on the case of Kemal Kurkut’s killing on March 11, 2022. The court reversed the local court’s acquittal on the grounds that Kemal Kurkut’s death was in the scope of “legal framework” and ruled that the final verdict should be “no legal ground for sentence” since it is not clear that the crime was committed by the accused. Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 7, has acquitted police officer Y. Ş., for killing university student Kemal Kurkut by shooting him behind his back during Newroz celebrations in Diyarbakır in 2017.

(03/117) Kobanê Case…

The trial of the case against 108 members and executives of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) including former co-chairs, including 21 arrestees, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22 between February 28 and March 11, 2022.

The court rejected demands for release and adjourned the trial to be held between March 28 and April 8, 2022.

The court has released 4 people (former Kars co-mayor Ayhan Bilgen who was replaced by a trustee, HDP’s former central executive board members Berfin Özgü Köse, Can Memiş and Cihan Erdal) at the trial held on June 15, 2021; and released 4 people (Zeki Çelik and former parliamentary members İbrahim Binici, Emine Beyza Üstün, Emine Ayna) on June 25, 2021.

(03/118) Police Officers on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 3 police officers (K. A., N. D. and Y. Ş.) on the grounds of committing violence to journalist Beyza Kural while she was reporting on an incident, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No 3 on March 11, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for the defendant police officers on the charge of ‘violation of freedom of work and labour’. The Constitutional Court decided on Beyza Kural’s individual appeal on February 18, 2021 and ruled that ban of treatment against human dignity, and freedom of expression and freedom of press were violated. The court has also ruled that an investigation should be carried on in order to end the results and 15,000 Turkish Liras should be paid to Beyza Kural as immaterial compensation.

After hearing defendant police officer N. D.’s statement via Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 14 the court adjourned the trial.

(03/119) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 123 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 25,401 as of March 11, 2022.

The Ministry of Health declared that 132 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 20,465 as of March 12, 2022.

The Ministry of Health declared that 138 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 17,426 as of March 13, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 96,487 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 14,551,926 as of March 13, 2022.
