(02/142) Workers Died in Istanbul…

It is learned that 5 workers died and 6 workers were injured in a fire that broke out in a workplace in Güngören district of Istanbul on February 11, 2022. It is reported that 4 of the deceased workers were asylum seekers who were locked in the restrooms, and it is claimed in the news reports that they were forcibly locked in there. 3 of 6 people who were detained in relation to the incident are arrested by the court while 3 of them are released on judicial control conditions on February 12, 2022. It is reported that Güngören Sub-Governorate’s Office and Bakırköy Public Prosecutor’s Office launched investigation.

It is learned that Şahin Adanur, a prisoner in Mersin Anamur T Type Closed Prison lost his life due to Covid-19 on February 12, 2022. It is reported that Şahin Adanur was under treatment in the intensive care unit of Mersin City Hospital for the last 53 days.

Nusret Muğla, an 84-year-old prisoner in Manisa T Type Prison, lost his life in hospital due to Covid-19 on February 13, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 11, 2022 that, the wards of female prisoners in Çorum L Type Prison were searched by male correction officers.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 12, 2022 that, relatives of prisoners in Tokat T Type Prison were forced to strip search before visits and those who reject it cannot visit the prisoners.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 14, 2022 that, prisoners are subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the correction officers and their personal belongings were seized during ward searches in Urfa T Type Closed Prison.

(02/146) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 11, 2022 that 2 ill prisoners (Bazo Yılmaz and Bayram Demirhan) in Urfa T Type Prison No 2, do not accept to go to hospital because of torture and ill-treatment the have been subjected to during hospital transfers.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 11, 2022 that, Nail Demir, an ill prisoner in Afyon T Type Prison No 1 cannot receive his treatment regularly.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 14, 2022 that, Fatma Özbay an ill prisoner in Izmir Şakran T Type Prison is not referred to hospital for diagnosis and treatment, and Siya Çınar, another ill prisoner was not referred to a private hospital for treatment.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 11, 2022 that, 140 prisoners in Van High Security Prison went on a 3-day hunger strike on February 10, 2022, demanding an end to right violations in prison and revelation of the truth about Ramazan Turan, a 70-year-old prisoner who died on January 21, 2022, in the solitary quarantine cell where he was held for 22 days.

It is learned that the appeal made on February 11, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, in order to visit them was not responded.

It is learned that a person (S. Ş.) who was detained in Mersin on February 12, 2022 was subjected to threat and psychological torture at Mersin Provincial Security Directorate.

(02/150) Armed Attack on HDP MP’s Car in Urfa…

On February 13, 2022, an armed attack was carried out by unknown person or persons on the parked car of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Urfa MP Ayşe Sürücü. It is learned that one bullet hit the car.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on February 11, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on February 11, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(02/153) Police Prevention to Protests in Eskişehir and Istanbul…

The police prevented the march to protest the increase in electricity and gas prices in Eskişehir on February 12, 2022. It is learned that the participants had a press declaration upon prevention.

The police prevented the people with pots and pans from participating in the protest in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on February 13, 2022. It is learned that the protest was held in another place upon prevention.

The police intervened the press declaration of Furkan Foundation members about 7 arrested members in Adana on February 12, 2022. It is learned that at least 2 people were injured.

(02/155) Detained Journalist in Şırnak…

Mezopotamya News Agency reporter Zeynep Durgut is detained by the police raiding her house in Cizre district of Şırnak on February 14, 2022. It is learned that Zeynep Durgut was handcuffed behind her back and was taken to Cizre District Security Directorate.

The Human Rights Association’s former branch chair lawyer Tarık Güneş and former executive lawyer Rumet Agit Özer are detained in Muş on February 12, 2022. Tarık Güneş is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on February 13, 2022 and Rumet Agit Özer is released on judicial control conditions.

It is learned that 3 members of HDP Youth Assembly and Mehmet Şerif Demirağaç, a person with 90 per cent physical disability, are detained in house raids in Van on February 13, 2022.The reason of detention is unknown.

It is learned that 4 members of HDP Youth Assembly are detained in house raids in Diyarbakır on February 13, 2022. The reason of detention is unknown.

Hacire Tanırgan, an activist of the Free Women’s Movement (TJA) is detained in a house raid in Mardin through a Diyarbakır based investigation on February 13, 2022. It is learned that Hacire Tanırgan will be taken to Diyarbakır.

It is learned that 2 people are detained in house raids in Cizre district of Şırnak on February 11, 2022. The reason of detention is unknown.

It is learned that 33 people are detained in house raids in Mersin on February 13, 2022, on the grounds of “being in preparation for actions”.

On February 12, 2022, a member of Students’ Collective is detained for social media posts in Mersin.

Director and actor Abdülselam Kılgı who was detained on the grounds of an investigation on him, at Izmir Airport where he arrived from Germany on February 8, 2022, is released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on February 11, 2022.

(02/164) Kobanê Case…

The trial of the case against 108 members and executives of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) including former co-chairs, including 21 arrestees, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22 between January 31 and February 11, 2022.

After defence hearings and complainant declarations, the court decided to continue detention of arrested politicians and adjourned the trial to February 28, 2022.

The court has released 4 people (former Kars co-mayor Ayhan Bilgen who was replaced by a trustee, HDP’s former central executive board members Berfin Özgü Köse, Can Memiş and Cihan Erdal) at the trial held on June 15, 2021; and released 4 people (Zeki Çelik and former parliamentary members İbrahim Binici, Emine Beyza Üstün, Emine Ayna) on June 25, 2021. The number of arrested politicians has raised to 22 after the arrest of Zeynep Kahraman, who was detained in Edirne on December 28, 2021.

(02/165) Co-Mayor on Trial in Mardin…

The trial of the case against Mülkiye Esmez, HDP co-mayor of Sur district of Diyarbakır, is held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 11 on February 11, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to May 11, 2022.

Mülkiye Esmez was detained on November 16, 2019 and was arrested by the court on November 26, 2019. She was released from prison on June 25, 2021. The Ministry of Interior appointed a trustee to Derik district on November 16, 2019.

(02/166) Journalist and Lawyers on Trial in Izmir…

The final trial of the case against 1 journalist and 25 lawyers is held at Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 8 on February 11, 2022. 26 people were detained in the police intervention to the press declaration in Izmir on August 22, 2019 to protest trustee appointments to Diyarbakır, Mardin and Van municipalities.

The indictment demands sentence for 26 people on the charge of ‘participating in unlawful meetings and demonstrations’. The court acquitted 26 people.

It is learned that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office has prepared an indictment against journalist Sedef Kabaş, demanding jail sentence up to 12 years and 10 months on the grounds of insulting the President, the Interior Minister and Transport and Infrastructure Minister in her expressions in a television programme.

It is learned that Mardin Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against Mezopotamya News Agency executive editor Ferhat Çelik for a news report, and that he made his official statement to Taksim Police Station in Istanbul on February 11, 2022.

On February 11, 2022, 5 lawyers including Nesip Yıldırım, former Diyarbakır branch chair of the Association for Human Rights and Solidarity for the Oppressed (Mazlum-Der) are detained in Diyarbakır.

(02/170) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 253 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 95,065 as of February 11, 2022.

The Ministry of Health declared that 272 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 86,193 as of February 12, 2022.

The Ministry of Health declared that 276 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 73,787 as of February 13, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 90,542 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 12,908,321 as of February 13, 2022.
