(08/064) Labor Killings…

A statement issued by the Council for Occupational Health and Safety (İSİG) indicated that in August 2026, at least 226 workers lost their lives whilst at work, including 15 women, 16 refugees/migrants and 15 children.

(09/065) Hunger Strike in Prison…

According to news reports on 11 September 2026, it emerged that two prisoners, Hüseyin Özarslan and Mehmet Akdemir, held at Antalya High-Security Prison, had been on hunger strike for 25 days in a bid to be transferred to another prison. The reports stated that Hüseyin Özarslan had been in prison for over 30 years, whilst Mehmet Akdemir had been there for over 20 years.

On 11 September 2026, 43 people were detained as part of an investigation launched into the Seferihisar district municipality in Izmir over allegations of “irregularities” and “bribery”.

(09/067) The Trial of the Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor…

Following the overturning of the acquittal ruling in the case brought against Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu at the Istanbul Anatolia Criminal Court of First Instance No. 16—on the grounds that he had insulted Tuzla Mayor Şadi Yazıcı in a speech—the final hearing of the retrial took place on 11 September 2026. The court sentenced Ekrem İmamoğlu to 2 years and 1 month’s imprisonment.

(09/068) The Trial of a Journalist in Istanbul…

The trial of journalist Ali Çağatay, brought before the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 5 on the grounds of a social media post he made, commenced on 10 September 2026. The indictment seeks the journalist’s conviction on charges of “publicly disseminating misleading information” and “publicly insulting the police force”. The court ruled that Ali Çağatay should be released on the condition that he is subject to a travel ban as a judicial control measure and adjourned the hearing until 1 October 2026.

Ali Çağatay had been arrested on 27 June 2026.

(09/069) The Trial of a Journalist in Istanbul…

The final hearing in the case brought against journalist Timur Soykan before the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 32, on the grounds of his social media posts, took place on 11 September 2026. The court acquitted the journalist of the charges of “publicly disseminating misleading information” and “publicly inciting others to commit a crime”.

(09/070) The Trial of a Political Party Executive on Trial…

The trial of Şahin Tümüklü, former Co-Chairperson of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), which was brought before the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 26, continued on 10 September 2026.

The indictment seeks the conviction of Şahin Tümüklü on the charge of “membership of an illegal organisation” The court ordered Şahin Tümüklü’s release and adjourned the hearing until 8 December 2026.

Şahin Tümüklü had been arrested on 3 February 2026.

(09/071) Person on Trial in Van…

The trial of Özgür Aras, who was arrested as part of an investigation targeting ESP members and executives, continued on 10 September 2026 at the Van Heavy Penal Court No. 4. The indictment seeks the conviction of Özgür Aras on the charge of “membership of an illegal organisation” The court ruled that Özgür Aras should remain in custody and adjourned the hearing until 3 November 2026.

Özgür Aras had been arrested on 3 February 2026.

(09/072) Individuals Detained as Part of an Istanbul-Based Investigation…

On 11 September 2026, 20 people were detained during operations carried out in six provinces as part of an Istanbul-based investigation, on the grounds that they were “members of the organisation’s covert structure within the police force”.
