(10/146) Refugees Who Lost Their Lives and Got Wounded due to a Racist Attack in Mersin…

It is learned from the news coverage of 11 October 2024 that, Hüseyin Azuz, a refugee in Mersin, lost his life due to a racist attack while praying at his workplace. It is learned that 2 other refugees were wounded in the same attack and were taken to a deportation centre.

It is learned from the news coverage of 10 October 2024 that, a Syrian refugee in Urfa Removal Centre was forced to ‘voluntary return’.

(10/148) Syrian Citizen Trans Women Subjected to a Phobic Hate Attack in Izmir…

It is learned from the news coverage of 11 October 2024 that, 2 trans women from Syria were subjected to a phobic attack of a group in Konak district of Izmir on 9 October 2024 and were wounded in various parts of their bodies. It is reported that trans women filed a criminal complaint about the attack.

A trans woman stated the following about the attack they were subjected to: ‘We were walking on the street, we were out for a stroll, we didn’t do anything. A few men started shouting at us, swearing ‘faggot, faggot, come here’. As we ignored them and continued walking, they suddenly started throwing stones at us. It hit my head and foot. We started to run away. We asked for help, but no one helped us. A few people even made fun of us. In the meantime, they caught me and this time they started to hit me.’

It is learned from the news coverage of 11 October 2024 that, prisoners in Malatya Akçadağ T Type Prison were subjected to strip searches and mouth searches during hospital transfers and prisoners who reject this were not taken to hospital.

It is learned that the appeal made on October 11, 2024, to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s family and tutelary along with the families and tutelary of Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

(10/151) A Journalist and Others Detained in Diyarbakır…

On 11 October 2024, 15 people including Serhildan Andan, journalist and board member of Dicle Fırat Journalists’ Association (DFG), were detained in house raids in Diyarbakır on the grounds of “a denunciation of a planned demonstration”. The detainees whose names could be learned are Serhildan Andan, Baran Baymış, and Murat Kayaş.

Yeni Yaşam Newspaper distributor İbrahim Çitaş was detained on 10 October 2024 in Istanbul on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’.

On 10 October 2024 in Antep, Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Şahinbey district co-chair Mustafa Tuç, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Antep provincial co-chair Mehmet Özkan and DBP Şahinbey district co-chair Müslüm Denizhan were detained after distributing leaflets about the rally to be held in Diyarbakır on 13 October 2024.

The trial of the case against journalist Barış Terkoğlu, based on three columns he wrote, upon the complaint of former Istanbul Anadolu Chief Public Prosecutor, continued on 10 October 2024 at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘defamation’. After defense hearings, the court adjourned the trial to 25 February 2025.

The trial of the case against journalist Barış Terkoğlu, upon the complaint of the former Istanbul Regional Court of Appeals Chief Prosecutor, continued on 10 October 2024 at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘publicly insulting a public officer’. The court adjourned the hearing to 25 January 2025 after defense hearings.

The trial of the case against 49 people including 3 journalists who were detained in the police intervention against the press statement of We Cannot Shelter Movement in Ankara on December 12, 2021, was held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 64 on October 8, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for 49 people on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The court adjourned the trial to 17 December 2024.

(10/157) Lawyer on Trial in Istanbul…

The final hearing of the case against lawyer Murat Sadak, on the grounds of re-sharing a post about the torture and ill-treatment of a client, was held at Istanbul Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No 25 on 10 October 2024. The court sentenced Murat Sadak to 1 year and 8 months for ‘unlawful disclosure or seizure of personal information’ and to 11 months and 20 days for ‘insulting a public officer on duty’, for a total of 2 years 7 months and 20 days, and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

(10/158) The GÖÇİZ-DER Case…

The trial of the lawsuit filed against the Migration Monitoring Association (GÖÇİZ-DER) with the demand to close down the association continued on 11 October 2024 at Istanbul Bakırköy Civil Court of First Instance No 15. The court adjourned the hearing to 25 December 2024.

(10/159) The Ministry of Culture’s Decision on the Film ‘Rojbash’…

It is learned from the news coverage of 11 October 2024 that, Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Motion Picture Classification and Evaluation Board decided that the Kurdish film ‘Rojbash’, which tells the story of a group of Kurdish theatre actors coming together after 25 years, is ‘not suitable for commercial circulation’. It is reported that a lawsuit was filed for the cancellation of the decision.
