(05/079) Asylum Seeker Child Killed in Mersin…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 10, 2023 that, a Syrian child named Khaled Hayanked (12), kidnapped for ransom in Mersin, was killed by a person named Hasan Cingöz after the child’s family informed the police.

(05/080) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Diyarbakır…

It is learned that a person named Şeyhmus Eşen was subjected to the physical violence of the police who stopped his car in Bismil district of Diyarbakır on May 11, 2023. It is learned that Şeyhmus Eşen and his 2-year-old child was injured.

Şeyhmus Eşen stated the following to the press: “The police shouted ‘stop, stop’. I don’t know the officer’s name. I stopped as the officer told me to stop. He continued to yell as he approached me. Then started to insult me. I said ‘My child is with me, why are you yelling, the child is afraid’. And he said ‘Are you responding to me?’ and pulled my collar. I held my child to prevent falling from the seat and I was trying to calm my child. The officer punched me as I turned my face. I was at the driver’s seat and he entered his head and kept hitting me. He was holding something in his hand, I could not detect what it was. He kept hitting my face and body. There were around 10 other officers near him and they hardly pull him off the car. He was insulting me at that moment. There are people witnessing all these (…) My child started crying and fell off the seat due to the fear. And there is a bump in my child’s head, which hit to the metal part of the seat and my child is under observation now.”

(05/081) Attack on Journalist in Çanakkale…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 10, 2023 that, the local Çandan Haber newspaper’s owner Muhammed Yavaş was attacked by Çan Grey wolves chair, because of a news report published about a banner of the Grey wolves in Çan district of Çanakkale. Muhammed Yavaş stated the following to the press: “Following our discussion on social media he called me to a cafe, saying ‘We will drink tea together’. We used to be friends so I went there. He shook my hand and attacked, saying ‘How dare you write about Mr. Devlet?’. I did not hit back”.

It is learned that the campaign event of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) to be held in Çankaya district of Ankara was banned by the District Electoral Committee on May 10, 2023.

It is learned that 9 people who were detained in relation to the attack on May 7, 2023 on the rally of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Erzurum with stones which injured 17 people, were released by the court on May 10, 2023 provided that 8 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

It is learned that the posters of İyi Party deputy candidate Gökhan Zan was removed by anonymous persons in Hatay on May 11, 2023.

(05/083) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalists Canan Coşkun and Barış Pehlivan, over a news report they made, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court no. 34 on May 9, 2023. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for 2 journalists on the charge of “targeting officials taking part in the fight against terrorism”. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to June 13, 2023.

The trial of the case against 17 people on the grounds of the slogans chanted at the 19th Feminist Night March on Istiklal Street in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on March 8, 2021, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 10 on May 9, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to July 11, 2023.

(05/085) Investigation Against Journalist in Istanbul…

It is learned that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against BirGün reporter İsmail Arı, on the grounds of ‘disseminating misleading information’ over his news reports about the Turkish Red Crescent, and that İsmail Arı made his official statement through the investigation on May 10, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 10, 2023 that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office decided “non-prosecution” of 374 people including 34 children who were detained by the police intervening in the Pride March in Istanbul on June 26, 2022.

(05/086) Investigation Against People for Participating in Protest in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 10, 2023 that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office decided “non-prosecution” of 163 people who were detained by the police intervening in the protests at the anniversary of Gezi Park protests in Istanbul on May 31, 2022.

(05/087) Prisoner on Trial in Kocaeli…

The first trial of the case against Şadiye Manap, who was released from Kocaeli Gebze Women’s Prison on December 1, 2022 after 30 years of imprisonment, but was detained and arrested before being released, through another investigation, is held at Kocaeli Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on May 10, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Şadiye Manap on the charge of ‘establishing and leading an illegal organisation’. Şadiye Manap attended the trial and made her defence. The court decided to continue detention of Şadiye Manap and adjourned the trial to June 1, 2023.

It is learned that a content published on the Freedom of Expression Association’s website https://ifade.org.tr is banned to access and ruled to be deleted on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Ankara Penal Court of Peace No. 2 on May 10, 2023.

It is learned that 2 news reports and 1 article about Barış Terkoğlu and Barış Pehlivan’s book “SS”, published on https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr website are banned to access and ruled to be deleted on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Ankara Penal Court of Peace No. 2 on May 10, 2023.

It is learned that the news reports about the statements of CHP chairman on the manipulation allegations in the Istanbul Stock Exchange, published on https://www.krttv.com.tr, https://www.polemikhaber.com websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No. 10 on May 10, 2023.

It is learned that the news reports about the Justice and Development Party (AKP) Youth Branch chair, published on https://t24.com.tr, https://tele1.com.tr, https://www.gercekgundem.com websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Karaman Penal Court of Peace on May 10, 2023.

It is learned that the news report about Bülent Arınç’s statements about the allegations of Ali Yeşildağ, published on https://www.gazeteduvar.com.tr website and a social media post about this news, are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Küçükçekmece Penal Court of Peace No. 1 on May 10, 2023.
