(02/121) Asylum Seeker Died in Izmir…

It is learned that a dead body of an asylum seeker was found in the coast of Çeşme district of Izmir on February 10, 2022.

(02/122) Racist Attack in Ankara…

It is learned that 2 people were subjected to physical violence in the racist attack on a shop of an Iraqi asylum seeker in Mamak district of Ankara on February 10, 2022. It is reported that the attack caused material damage in the shop.

(02/123) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Şırnak…

It is learned that, a police officer hit a person on the sidewalk at the face with his shield, and injured him, while intervening the protest against raises in electricity and gas prices in Idil district of Şırnak on February 10, 2022.

(02/124) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 10, 2022 that in Kırıkkale Keskin T Type Prison the heating in the wards are on only one hour a day.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 10, 2022 that, relatives of prisoners who came to visit them in Urfa T Type Prison No 1 were forced to strip search and those who reject were not allowed to visit. It is also stated in the news reports that the correction officers use dogs during ward searches and the prices are high at the prison commissary.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 10, 2022 that, Barış Demir, a prisoner in Ağrı M Type Prison was subjected to physical violence of the correction officers.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 10, 2022 that, Perihan Yoğurtçu was subjected to torture and ill-treatment at the entrance of Antalya Alanya L Type Prison as she rejected strip search; and she was subjected to strip search.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 10, 2022 that, ill prisoners in Mardin E Type Prison were not being referred to hospitals, and prisoners were not given face masks, gloves and cleaning supplies to be protected from Covid-19 pandemic, and quarantine wards are dirty.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 10, 2022 that, Ahmet Dizlek, an ill prisoner in Kocaeli Kandıra Prison, was not receiving chemotherapy for the last 3 months.

It is learned that the appeal made on February 10, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in order to visit him was not responded.

(02/127) Police Intervention to Funeral in Istanbul…

The police intervened the group gathering in front of Gazi Cemevi in Istanbul on February 10, 2022, for the funeral of Birsen Kars who died in Germany on February 6, 2022. The police detained 16 people and 14 of them were released on the same day after statement procedures while 2 people are still under custody. Birsen Kars was heavily injured in the operation against prisons on December 19, 2000.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on February 10, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on February 10, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(02/130) Detained Party Executive for Holding a Banner…

Recep Onur, provincial chair of the Left Party in Rize, is detained for holding a banner reading “This would be your last raise” at the press declaration about the raise in electricity and gas prices in Pazar district on February 10, 2022. Recep Onur is released after statement procedures on the same day.

(02/131) Detained Human Rights Defender in Diyarbakır…

Ferhat Berkpınar, an executive board member of the Human Right Association Diyarbakır branch who was detained on February 3, 2022 is released by the court on judicial control conditions on February 10, 2022.

(02/132) Detained People in Şırnak…

On February 10, 2022, 2 people (Ramazan Örüç and Gafur Örüç) are detained in house raids in Idil district of Şırnak. The reason of detention is unknown. 2 people are released after statement procedures on the same day.

(02/133) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against journalist Mehmet Şahin, through the investigation on the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on February 10, 2022. The court sentenced Mehmet Şahin to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(02/134) Publisher on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Publisher Azad Dal, through the investigation on DTK, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 on February 10, 2022.

Azad Dal’s lawyers did not join the trial on excuse and the court adjourned the trial to March 10, 2022.

Azad Dal was arrested on June 26, 2020 and was released on July 18, 2020.

(02/135) Özgür Gündem Case…

The retrial of the case against writer and Özgür Gündem newspaper’s board of consulting editors’ member Aslı Erdoğan, is held on February 10, 2022, as the verdict of Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23 was reversed. The court acquitted Aslı Erdoğan.

(02/136) People on Trial in Eskişehir…

The first trial of the case against 5 people for participating in the protest demanding housing rights, is held at Eskişehir Penal Court of First Instance No 5 on February 10, 2022. The court acquitted 5 people.

(02/137) People on Trial in Izmir…

The first trial of the case against 18 people for participating in the protest against Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, is held at Izmir Bayraklı Penal Court of First Instance No 44 on February 10, 2022.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to May 13, 2022.

(02/138) Police Officers on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 3 police officers for performing strip search on Mücella Yapıcı and Cansu Yapıcı, who were detained during Gezi Park protests in 2013, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 11 on February 10, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for defendant police officers at least 3 years up to 12 years on the charge of ‘torture’.

One witness stated the following: “We were subjected to ill-treatment as we were detained. There were 50 people, it was July and the weather was very hot, and the air conditioners were not working. We spent 4 days in the cells, we could not breathe for 4 days. We reacted as we heard that Mücella was not given her medications. And we learned that there were cameras in the restrooms when a friend screamed.”

Another witness stated the following: “In the detention vehicle they said ‘We will do many more things to you’ (…) We were taken downstairs at the security directorate. I remember it was too fuggy and too crowded down there. After a while we were taken to a store-like place to be searched. They made me took off all of my clothes, when they wanted me to take my underwear off I asked for the reason, and there were laughs. They said ‘it is ok; you do not have to take them off’ as I refused to do so.”

Another witness stated the following: “They wanted me to undress, they made us take our underwear too. We had an argument. I have asthma, and they gave my medication too late. They did not take me to the restroom for a long while. I know that they treated Mücella Yapıcı differently, they took her to a remote place. There was a 17year-old woman, I saw five police officers putting her down and stepping on her to get fingerprints.”

The court decided to ask the camera recordings from Istanbul Security Directorate and adjourned the trial to July 7, 2022.

(02/139) Festus Okey Case…

The retrial of the case against police officer C. Y., for death of Festus Okey, a Nigerian citizen, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 21 on February 10, 2021. The court adjourned the trial to May 25, 2022.

Festus Okey was detained in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on August 20, 2007 and died at Beyoğlu Police Station. The local court has sentenced C. Y. to 16 years and 8 months on the charge of ‘killing with eventual intent’ but the Penal Department No 1 of the Cassation Court has reversed the verdict and demanded retrial on the charge of ‘reckless killing’.

(02/140) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On February 10, 2022, 1 person is detained in Bolu.

On February 11, 2022, 21 people are detained in operations covering 5 cities through an Istanbul based investigation.

(02/141) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 264 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 98,602 as of February 10, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 89,741 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 12,653,276 as of February 10, 2022.
