(08/055) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defence announced that 1 soldier (Ege Süleyman Görece) who was wounded in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants during the “Claw-Lock” military operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government, died on August 11, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 10, 2023 that 1 militant died in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in Qandil area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government.

(08/056) Racist Attack in Istanbul…

It is learned that the mother, aunt and sister of Ruken Tuncel, the editor of Bianet, were subjected to racist attack of their neighbours M. Y. and A. Y. on August 10, 2023, who have said “We will burn you. These Alevis, you have every kind of sham, selling drugs, using heroin. You participate in marches but it is not like marching. I have a pump riffle at it is only a matter of time to use it. I can unload it on you”, at the entrance of their building in Beylikdüzü district of Istanbul. It is learned that Ruken Tuncel’s sister Sinem Tuncel was subjected to physical violence too which injured her.

(08/057) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 10, 2023 that the letters of prisoners regarding right violations in Mersin Tarsus Women’s Prison addressing journalists and human rights organisations were seized by the prison administration for “security” reasons.

(08/058) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on August 10, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(08/059) Detained People in Mersin…

It is learned that 11 people were detained in house raids in Mersin on August 11, 2023 on the grounds of “making propaganda for an illegal organisation at the Newroz celebration”. The names of detained people learned so far are: Şiyar Oğuz, Muhammet Tutmaz.

(08/060) Journalist on Trial in Bitlis…

The indictment of Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor’s Office against journalist Mehmet Şah Oruç was rejected by Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 4 on the grounds of lack of venue. The indictment was accepted by Bitlis Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on August 10, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Mehmet Şah Oruç on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The first trial will be held on September 14, 2023. Mehmet Şah Oruç was detained on April 25, 2023 and was arrested by the court on April 27, 2023.

(08/061) Detained and Deported US Citizen Journalist…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 10, 2023 that, the United States (US) citizen journalist Daniel McArdle was detained by the gendarmerie as he was reporting on the protest against the lignite mine to be established in Akbelen Forest in Milas district of Muğla on August 6, 2023, and was taken to Ula Repatriation Center where he was kept for 3 days without seeing his lawyers and was then deported.

Daniel McArdle stated the following the press: “They did not allow me do anything. They did not allow me to call the lawyer, call the embassy, to object, even to speak after a while, and did not tell me where I was going. (…) No phone until you get on the plane. No phone calls, no appeals (…) I finally got on the bus to the airport yesterday and they sent me off like a tourist, without a code or stamp that I was deported.”

His lawyer stated the following: “I wanted to inquire about McArdle, but the officials did not give any information (…) It is not clear yet whether he has been formally deported. Because the administrative detention decision cannot be made in such a short time. However, de facto deportation method was applied. We were not informed at this time. Authorities said that it has not been decided yet, but we learned from Daniel McArdle later that he was sent to Spain. He also wanted to go to Spain. If an official deportation order has been made, we will appeal.”

(08/062) Cancelled Festival in Bursa…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 10, 2023 that the Music Festival to be held by the Republican People’s Party (CHP) municipality in Nilüfer district of Bursa on September 1-3, 2023, was cancelled due to the ban on camping and alcohol.

Nilüfer Municipality stated the following: “The 7th Nilüfer Music Festival to be held on September 1, 2, 3 this year is banned for camping and alcohol. So we decided to cancel the festival. We will initiate the legal processes about this prevention”.
