(08/088) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defence announced that 1 soldier (Infantry Sergeant Mahsun Şimşek) died in a clash during the Claw-Lock military operation of the Turkish Armed Forces into the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on August 10, 2022.

(08/089) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 10, 2022 that, 2 prisoners (Ziya Ataman and Sinan Karer) in Van High Security Prison are transferred to Erzurum Dumlu High Security Prison No. 2 and 3 prisoners (Cengiz Ural, Yakup Şahin and Nevzat Şahin) are transferred to Ağrı Patnos Closed Prison on August 8, 2022 under coercion.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 10, 2022 that, 8 prisoners in Antalya S Type Closed Prison are subjected to disciplinary proceedings for opening the iron cage over the open-door area and are given the penalty of 100 days of solitary cell confinement.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 11, 2022 that, the commissary for visitors in Ağrı Patnos L Type Closed Prison is closed for over 2 years due to Covid-19 pandemic.

(08/090) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 10, 2022 that, 10 prisoners in Urfa T Type Prison No. 1 started a hungers strike on August 7, 2022 to demand an end to right violations in prison. The prisoner on hunger strike are: İdris Duruk, Emin Çetindaş, Ömer Aslan, Suat Berlik, Selami Çiftçi, Mazlum Doğan Tanış, Şervan Muhammed, Emin Korkmaz, Lokman Ayebe and Abdulselam Demir.

(08/091) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Prison…

The Lawyers for Freedom Association (ÖHD) made a declaration on August 10, 2022 and stated that their client Mehdi Mıhçı, who was detained on August 6, 2022 in Istanbul, was subjected to torture and ill-treatment under custody at the Anti-Terror Department, was forced to be a police informant, and the torture and ill-treatment continued although he went on a hunger strike on August 9, 2022.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on August 10, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(08/093) Detained People in Şırnak…

It is learned that 3 people are detained in house raids in Silopi district of Şırnak on August 9, 2022. The reason for detention is unknown.

(08/094) Journalists on Trial in Diyarbakır…

It is learned that, in the monthly file examination for the case against 16 journalists who were detained in Diyarbakır on June 8, 2022 and arrested on June 16, 2022 (Mezopotamya News Agency editor Aziz Oruç, Jinnews News Director Safiye Alagaş, Dicle Fırat Journalists Association co-chair Serdar Altan, Xwebün Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Mehmet Ali Ertaş, Ömer Çelik, Neşe Toprak, Mehmet Şahin, Zeynel Abidin Bulut, Elif Üngör, Remziye Temel, Suat Doğuhan, Lezgin Akdeniz, İbrahim Koyuncu, Abdurrahman Öncü, Ramazan Geciken and Mazlum Güler) on August 10, 2022, the court decided to continue the detention.

(08/095) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

It is learned that the indictment against Nazan Özcan, the former Editorial Director of Bianet, on the charge of “publicly degrading and slander” by the news about the lawsuits filed for the news reports about the former lawyer of the President, is accepted by the Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 34 on August 10, 2022. The first trial of the case will be held on December 8, 2022.

(08/096) Investigation Against Lawyer in Van…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 10, 2022 that, an investigation is launched against ÖHD Van co-chair Ebru Demirtepe, on the charge of ‘inciting hatred and hostility among public’ by a social media post about Deniz Poyraz, who was killed in the armed attack on the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Izmir office.

(08/097) Constitutional Court Decision on Press Advertisement Agency…

The Constitutional Court (AYM) decision dated March 10, 2022, on the penalties imposed by the Press Advertisement Agency on the newspapers Evrensel, BirGün, Cumhuriyet and Sözcü was published in the Official Gazette on August 10, 2022. The court stated that “Considering the penalties, it has been observed that the authority given to the institution has gone beyond the aim of regulating the ethical values of the press and has now turned into a punishment tool that can have a deterrent effect for some members of the press, and this situation has caused a systematic problem”, and ruled that the freedom of press and expression has been violated.

(08/098) Constitutional Court Decision on Fair Trial…

It is learned that on August 10, 2022, the Constitutional Court decided on the individual application of Umut Can Bozgun, who was injured by gas canister used by the police on June 2, 2013 in Ankara during the Gezi Park protests. In its decision, the court ruled that “the right to a reasoned decision within the scope of the right to a fair trial has been violated”, as the lawsuit filed after Umut Can Bozgun’s complaint to the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office was rejected on the grounds that the police officer responsible for the incident could not be found.

(08/099) Constitutional Court Decision on Torture and Ill-Treatment…

The Constitutional Court’s decision dated April 14, 2022, on the individual application of Deniz Şah, who was subjected to torture and ill-treatment by the correction officers in Bolu F Type High Security Prison, is published in the Official Gazette on August 11, 2022. Deniz Şah has been subjected to physical violence of the correction officers for holding a sit-in protest in the prison and was not taken to the infirmary on April 3, 2018. The court ruled that the prohibition on ill-treatment guaranteed in Article 17 of the Constitution was violated, that the decision will be sent to the Bolu Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office for re-investigation, and Deniz Şah should be paid 45,000 Turkish Liras for non-pecuniary damage.

(08/100) Ban of Festival in Balıkesir…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 10, 2022 that, the application made by the organization company for the Zeytinli Rock Festival, which is planned to be held in the Burhaniye district of Balıkesir on 17-21 August 2022, was rejected by the district governor’s office on the grounds that “Considering the intense complaints and grievances made by our citizens, it was not deemed appropriate for the purposes of public safety and health, public peace, and protection of the environment”.
