(04/111) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from news coverage of April 10, 2018 that in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in rural areas of Diyarbakır’s Kulp district on April 3, 2018 2 militants died.

It is learned that in a military operation in rural areas of Bitlis on April 10, 2018 1 solider died due to an explosion.

It is learned that in a military operation in rural areas of Hakkari’s Çukurca district on April 10, 2018 1 solider died due to falling off a cliff.

(04/112) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from news coverage of April 10, 2018 that a prisoner named Cemal Bozkurt in Tekirdağ F Type Prison No 2 has made an official complaint about being subjected to physical violence of wardens and Tekirdağ Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office have made a decision of non-prosecution.

(04/113) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on April 10, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on April 10, 2018 4 people (Mehmet Dersulu, Nazan Bozkurt, Gülnaz Bozkurt and Mahmut Konuk) and at 18.00 3 people (Nazan Bozkurt, Selvi Polat, Acun Karadağ) were detained.

Thus in total 7 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on April 10, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(04/114) Journalists Detained in Istanbul…

On MArch 28, 2018 a trustee was appointed for Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper and Gün Publishing House where the newspaper was published, and in raids to the offices of the newspaper and publishing house 29 people were detained. 4 of 7 editors and employees of Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper are arrested for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ by the court on April 10, 2018. 3 of them are released on juridical control conditions.

22 people including the owner of Gün Publishing House Kasım Zengin, Publisher of Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper İhsan Yaşar and managing editor İshak Yasul were arrested through the same investigation. Thus the total number of arrestees raised up to 26.

(04/115) Detained and Arrested HDP and DBP Members and Executives…

4 of 23 people who were detained in raids to HDP Avcılar district office on April 4, 2018 are arrested for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ by the court on April 10, 2018. 19 people (7 of them on juridical control conditions) are released. The names of arrestees are: HDP district co-chair Mahmut Çakan, Yalçın Demir, Abdullah Tima and Mevlüt Yalpazoğlu.

(04/116) The Cases Against Academics Who Are the Signatories of the Petition “We will not be a party to this crime!”…

The case against academician E.B. for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 32 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ continued to be held on April 10, 2018. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for E.B. for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The court adjourned the trial to July 17, 2018.

(04/117) Trial of People in Nusaybin…

The case against 67 people including 17 children who were detained and arrested during the curfew in Nusaybin district of Mardin, on Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 4 continued to be held on April 10, 2018. Nobody including the families of defendants are allowed to the courtroom. After defence hearings the court decided on continuation of detention for 17 children and adjourned the trial to June 28, 2018.

(04/118) Soldier on Trial in Hakkari for Death of a Civilian…

The case against soldier Ali Dağkıran, who is responsible for death of Sürmi İnce (55) on Yüksekova Heavy Penal Court continued to be held on April 10, 2018. Sürmi İnce died by gun fire of soldiers while she was taking breakfast to her family in Büyükçiftlik town of Hakkari’s Yüksekova district on July 18, 2016. İnce’s family lawyer demanded judging of Ali Dağkıran for wilful murder. The court adjourned the trial to May 15, 2018.

(04/119) Trials of HDP PMs’…

The case against HDP Group Deputy and Adana PM Meral Danış Beştaş on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 continued to be held on April 10, 2018. Meral Danış Beştaş, for whom sentence up to 25 years for ‘being an illegal organisation member’, publicly inciting to committing crime’, ‘attending illegal meetings and demonstrations unarmed and not leaving despite the warnings’ did not attend to the trial. The court rejected Beştaş’s lawyers’ demand for investigation on HDP central executive committee decisions whether they involve any decision on Kobane or not and adjourned the trial to October 2018.

(04/120) Trial of Grup Yorum Band Member…

The final trial of the case against 4 people including Dilan Ekin, member of Grup Yorum Band, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23 is held on April 10, 2018. Dilan Ekin, the only arrested defendant did not attend the trial since she did not accept to defence herself via sound and vision system. The court sentenced Dilan Ekin to 2 years and 10 months for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and acquitted her on juridical control conditions and with a ban on leaving the country. It is learned that Dilan Ekin was detained after being released from Gebze Prison, due to another investigation on her and taken to Istanbul Police Headquarters. It is also reported that no information was given to her lawyers.

Berrak Çağlar, Dilan Ekin’s lawyer, stated in her declaration on news that the decision on Dilan Ekin is given without hearing her defence since not being taken to the trial is considered as ‘resignation from defence right’ according to the state of emergency decree. She also stated that Dilan Ekin was brought to the courthouse on March 19, 2018 for the previous trial but not brought to the trial, and again not brought to the final trial since the court did not send a writ to the prison. She continued as follows: “… the principle of in person judging requires hearing defence of my client in front of the judge in the courtroom. The right to defence of my client is seized and she is being sentenced as a result of it. It would result in dangerous incidents in criminal procedure in case it becomes a habit”.

 

(04/121) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

It is learned from news coverage of April 10, 2018 that 3 people (İbrahim Akbaş, Adnan Demirönal and Osman Özpınar) are taken to Turkey after an operation in Gabon of national intelligence organisation.

On April 10, 2018, in operations covering 16 cities through an Ankara based investigation 50 teachers who work at schools closed down by the state of emergency decree, 7 people in Tokat, in operations covering 6 cities thorugh an Uşak based investigatin 5 people and 5 people in Aksaray ncluding former police officers dismissed by state of emergency decree are detained.

The final trial of the case against Emre Soncan, reporter of Zaman newspaper that was closed down by the state of emergency decree, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 25 is held on April 10, 2018. The court sentenced Emre Soncan to 7 years and 6 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(04/122) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against Mustafa Çağatay, former reporter judge of the Constitutional Court, on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 23 is held on April 10, 2018. The court sentenced Mustafa Çağatay to 7 years and 6 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and released him. It is learned that the public prosecutor objected to the release of Çağatay.

The final trial of the case against former proecutor Ömer Öz and former judge Ceylan Göksu Öz who was dismissed by the state of emergency decree, on Adana Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on April 10, 2018. The court sentenced Ömer Öz to 7 years and 6 months and Ceylan Göksu Öz to 6 years and 3 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court decided on continuation of detention for Ömer Öz.

The final trial of the case agains Seyfullah Kökdemir on Adana Heavy PEnal Court No 2 is held on April 10, 2018. The court sentenced Kökdemir to 7 years and 6 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

It is learned that 3 people (Alınteri newspaper readers) who were hanging banners about May 1 in Maltepe district of Istanbul are detained on April 10, 2018.

It is learned that a press declaration about arrested students, which was intended to be held in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on April 10, 2018 is prevented by the police.

(04/125) Event Prevented in Kocaeli…

It is learned that Ekmek ve Gül Women’s Solidarity Association’s application to Izmit sub-governorate to open stands for petition campaign “We Will Not Let Child Abuse Crimes to be Absolved” is rejected on April 10, 2018 due to to state of emergency conditions.

(04/126) Ban on Newspaper Issues…

It is learned from news coverage of April 10, 2018 that MArch 17, 19 and 29 issues of Kurdish daily Welat were banned by Mersin Justice of Peace No 2 and Van Justice of Peace No 1 on April 3, 2018. Welat newspaper has ended published edition on March 30, 2018 as a result of oppression of tje publishing houses. On March 28, 2018 Özgürlükçü Demokrasi and Welat offices were raided as well as Gün Publishing House and a trustee were appointed to the publishing house. The reports on news coverage claimed that other publishing houses were threated to not to publish Welat newspaper.
