(04/081) Person Died Due to Police Shot in Istanbul…

The police intervened 1 person (A. M.) for violating 2-day curfew as a precaution for Covid-19, on April 11, 2020 in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul. It is learned that this person took the gun of a police officer which fell down during the intervention and wounded 1 police officer. It is reported that A. M. got heavily wounded by shooting of another police officer and died in hospital on April 12, 2020.

(04/082) People Subjected to Police Violence in Istanbul…

The police fined a person, Eyüp Halim (18), for sitting in a park and violating 2-day curfew as a precaution for Covid-19, on April 11, 2020 in Kanarya neighbourhood of Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul. It is learned that the police insulted Eyüp Halim and a quarrel took place between them, and Eyüp Halim was then subjected to physical violence of the police. It is reported that 4 brothers of Eyüp Halim (Bülent Halim, Hasan Halim, İbrahim Halim and Hüseyin Halim) who witnessed the violence and came to intervene were also subjected to physical violence of the police.

It is learned that Bülent Halim had an operation recently and sutures on his body opened due to police violence, and he was taken to intensive care unit of Küçükçekmece Public Hospital. It is reported that 4 people (Eyüp Halim, Hasan Halim, İbrahim Halim and Hüseyin Halim) were detained.

(04/083) Journalist Was Assaulted in Izmir…

It is learned that Ulvi Tanrıverdi, grant holder of Çağrı Haber local newspaper and Çağrı Radio executive editor was assaulted in Menemen district of Izmir on April 10, 2020. It is reported that 1 person (S. E.) was detained in relation to assault. It is learned that Ulvi Tanrıverdi made an official complaint on April 12, 2020, against S. E. and Menemen mayor Serdar Aksoy on the claim of instigating the assault.

(04/084) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

Ministry of Justice made a declaration via twitter and announced that, as a part of precautions for Covid-19 pandemic, all visits to open and closed prisons including lawyer visits, workshop activities, leave permissions special to open prisons, using family visit rooms, collective activities for prisoners, transfers between prisons, nursery and kindergarten for children under the age of 6 who are with their mothers in prison, or sending them out to their parents or relatives are suspended until April 30, 2020.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 13, 2020 that in Denizli Kocabaş T Type Prison, 17 political prisoners are kept in a ward for 6 people. It is also stated in the news reports that prisoners were not given cleaning supplies and disinfectants despite of Covid-19 pandemic.

(04/085) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1251 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on April 10, 2020 at 13.30 and at 18.00, and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

On April 12, 2020, the police detained 1 person (Mehmet Dersulu) who wants to go in front of Human Rights Monument to hold a press declaration at 13.30. It is learned that Mehmet Dersulu was released after a penalty fine.

(04/086) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration for architect Alev Şahin, who was dismissed from her job by a state of emergency decree, in front of Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning building in Ankara on April 10, 2020; and forced 1 person (Mehmet Dersulu) way from the building.

(04/087) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the press declaration of Solidarity Network, about employees forced to work despite of Covid-19 pandemic, in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on April 10, 2020, and detained 7 people. It is learned that 7 people were taken to Kadıköy Police Directorate and they were not allowed to see their lawyers. It is stated in the news reports that the police did not follow precautions for Covid-19 during intervention, did not wear gloves and face masks. 7 people are imposed a fine of 3180 Turkish Liras each and were released on the same day.

(04/088) Detained Lawyer in Istanbul for Social Media Posts…

Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD) member apprentice lawyer Yağız Timoçin who was detained in Istanbul on April 9, 2020, on the charge of ‘provocation for violating laws’ for his social media post “we will not pay”, is released by the court on judicial control conditions on April 10, 2020.

(04/089) Detained Photographer in Adana…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 11, 2020 that, photographer Fadime Aygün who takes photos of the confluence in Adana streets which took place after announcement of 2-day curfew on April 10, 2020 covering 31 cities as a part of precautions for Covid-19, was detained by watchmen. Fadime Aygün states in the news reports that she was taken to a police car in which there were 5 people but only 1 watchman was wearing a face mask; and there were other detainees in the police station where nobody including security officers followed any precautions for Covid-19 such as wearing face masks. Fadime Aygün also states the following: “I was kept in the police station for about two hours. My family was not informed. There were no detention and release reports for me, and no official paper was given me to sign. I was not taken to judicial examination. They deleted my photos before releasing me.”

(04/090) Arrested Person on the Charge of Insulting Atatürk…

Comedian Emre Günsal was detained in Istanbul on the grounds of ‘insulting Atatürk, Mevlana and Konya city’ during a stand-up show, is arrested by the court on April 10, 2020, on the charges of ‘violating the Law No 5816 concerning insults toward, or toward the memory of Atatürk’, ‘insulting the memory of a person’, ‘provoking the public to hatred and hostility’ and ‘insult’.

(04/091) Co-The Case Against Co-Mayor…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 11, 2020 that, Van Public Prosecutor’s office repapered an indictment against Van co-mayor Bedia Özgökçe Ertan, who was suspended; and submitted it to Van Heavy Penal Court No 7.

The indictment demands sentence for Bedia Özgökçe Ertan on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, for co-mayor system.

(04/092) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The indictment of Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office against journalist Sabiha Temizkan is accepted by Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 35 on April 10, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for Sabiha Temizkan for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation on social media’.

The first trial will be held on June 25, 2020.

(04/093) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Interior declared a circular on April 10, 2020 and announced a 48-hour curfew as a part of precautions for Covid-19 pandemic as of 00.00 on April 11, 2020 in 31 cities including 30 metropolitan cities, excepting individuals and institutions stated in the circular.

Ministry of Health declared that 98 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 4,747 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on April 10, 2020.

Ministry of Health declared that 95 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 5,138 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on April 11, 2020.

Ministry of Health declared that 97 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 4,789 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on April 12, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 1,198 and total number of confirmed cases is 56,956 as of April 12, 2020.
