It is learned that brigadier general Sezgin Erdoğan died due to heart attack, in İdlib area of Syria on September 9, 2020.

(09/093) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 9, 2020 that 2 TKP/ML TİKKO militants died in an air operation of Turkish Armed Forces to rural areas of Ovacık district of Tunceli on September 7, 2020.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 9, 2020 that gendarmerie specialised sergeant Hüseyin Çatal died from heart attack at Gökçek Gendarmerie Station in Tunceli.

(09/094) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD), Association of Families of Prisoners (TUHAY-DER) and Van Bar Association declared their report about Patnos L Type Prison on September 9, 2020. It is learned from the report that 17 prisoners are kept in wards for 8 people, and 24 prisoners are kept in wards for 15 people. It is also stated in the report that prisoners are not given cleaning supplies for protection form Covid-19 pandemic; the water given to them is dirty; social and sport rights are prevented; newspapers asked by prisoners are not given to them, and their petitions are not pun into process.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 9, 2020 that prisoners in Diyarbakır Women’s Closed Prison are forced to wear double handcuffs during transfers to hospitals, courthouses, etc.; surveillance cameras in prison are recording bathrooms and toilettes; and prisoners are subjected to strip search at prison administration.

(09/095) Person Forced to be Police Informant in Diyarbakır…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 9, 2020 that, Oktay Özoğlu, a member of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Diyarbakır was called by a police officer on August 5, 2020 and was called to Ergani District Security Directorate where he was taken into a room by two people claim themselves to be intelligence police officers and was forced to be a police informant. Özoğlu states the following: “(…) They said ‘we want daily, instant information about who is doing what’ and wanted me to work for them. They promised me a job at municipality, and whatever I ask from state institutions. (…) ‘We will get you disappeared under custody, you cannot find a job if you don’t do what we say’ they said, and threatened me.”

It is learned that Beren Atıcı, Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) is detained in Diyarbakır on September 9, 2020. It is learned that Beren Atıcı was detained through an Istanbul based investigation against ESP.

(09/097) Arrested Co-Mayor in Ağrı…

Betül Yaşar, HDP co-mayor of Diyadin district of Ağrı who was detained on July 13, 2020 and was arrested by the court on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ on July 15, 2020; is released from prison upon her lawyers’ appeal on September 9, 2020.

(09/098) Sivas Massacre Case…

The trial of the case against 3 fugitive defendants (Eren Ceylan, Murat Sonkur and Murat Karataş) for whom the case was separated from Sivas Massacre case, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 1 on September 9, 2020. The court rejected to hear Patriotic Party president Doğu Perinçek and writer Ahmet Nesin as witnesses, decided to continue arrest warrants for defendants and adjourned the trial to January 20, 2021.

(09/099) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against Mehmet Ferhat Çelik (managing editor of Yeni Yaşam newspaper), Aydın Keser (executive editor of Yeni Yaşam newspaper), Barış Pehlivan (managing editor of Oda TV), Barış Terkoğlu (chief news editor of Oda TV) and reporter Hülya Kılınç, Murat Ağırel (Yeniçağ newspaper writer) and journalist Eren Ekinci for the news reports on National Intelligence officer who died in Libya and was buried in Manisa, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 34 on September 10, 2020.

The court sentenced Aydın Keser, Ferhat Çelik and Murat Ağırel to 4 years and 8 months and 7 days each, and Barış Pehlivan and Hülya Kılınç to 3 years and 9 months for ‘violating the law of national intelligence organisation’. The court released Barış Pehlivan, Hülya Kılınç and Murat Ağırel with a ban on leaving the country and judicial control conditions. The court lifted judicial control conditions on Aydın Keser and Ferhat Çelik, and separated the case against Erk Acarer. The court acquitted 7 people on the charge of ‘disclosure of information relating to the security and political interests of the state’.

Oda TV chief news editor Barış Terkoğlu and reporter Hülya Kılınç were detained on March 4, 2020 and were arrested by the court on March 5, 2020. Oda TV managing editor Barış Pehlivan was detained on March 6, 2020 and was arrested on the same day. Mehmet Ferhat Çelik, Aydın Keser and Murat Ağırel were detained and then released on judicial control conditions on March 6, 2020; however, upon prosecutor’s appeal they were detained again and were arrested on March 8, 2020.

(09/100) Özgür Gündem Main Case…

The final trial of the case against executive editor Zana Kaya, managing editor İnan Kızılkaya, grant holder Kemal Sancılı and writer Eren Keskin of Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23 on September 9, 2020. On February 14, 2020, the court separated the case against these 4 people. The court adjourned the trial to December 24, 2020.

(09/101) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The case against 4 people including Etkin News Agency editor Semiha Şahin and reporter Pınar Gayıp, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23 is held on September 9, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for 4 people on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court adjourned the trial to December 22, 2020.

(09/102) TJA Activist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against Tevgera Jinên Azad – Free Women’s Movement (TJA) activist Gülcihan Şimşek is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on September 9, 2020. After defence hearings the court released Gülcihan Şimşek and adjourned the trial to December 14, 2020. Gülcihan Şimşek was detained on May 22, 2020 through a Diyarbakır based investigation and was arrested on May 24, 2020.

(09/103) HDP Executive on Trial in Van…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 9, 2020 that, the indictment of Van Public Prosecutor’s Office against Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Party Assembly member Hatice Büşra Kuyun on the grounds of ‘provoking hatred and hostility among people’ in her declarations about being abducted and threatened, is accepted by Van Penal Court of First Instance No 7. Hatice Büşra Kuyun was abducted by persons claim to be intelligence officers with a white vehicle registered with 65 AAT 923 license number in Van on May 4, 2020, was deforced for about 2 hours and was asked about her political activities and was threatened by them.

(09/104) Detained Person in Muğla for ‘Insulting the President’…

On September 8, 2020, a person named M. S. is detained in Bodrum district of Muğla, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ in social media posts. Detained person is released by the court with a ban on leaving the country and on judicial control conditions on the same day.

The final trial of the case against former police officer Yaşar Dadak is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 15 on September 9, 2020. The court sentenced the defendant to 6 years 10 months and 15 days for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The final trial of the case against Mevlüt Tufan is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 16 on September 9, 2020. The court sentenced the defendant to 8 years and 9 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

It is learned that web contents on https://yesilgazete.org/https://onedio.com/ and https://eksisozluk.com/ about President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s wife Emine Erdoğan’s bag, are banned to access by Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No 8 on September 9, 2020.

It is learned that a news report on https://www.sozcu.com.tr/  website about Director of Cultural Affairs of Afyon Municipality who was appointed as worker at parks, is banned to access by Afyonkarahisar Penal Court of Peace No 1 on September 2, 2020.

(09/091) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 55 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,673 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on September 9, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 6,837 and total number of confirmed cases is 284,943 as of September 9, 2020.
