(06/062) Iranian Citizens Attacked in Rize…
It was learned from news reports on June 9, 2026, that 38 Iranian seasonal agricultural workers employed in tea harvesting in the Çayeli district of Rize were attacked by a group of 15 people, reportedly including their employer, after they demanded their wages, and that some of the workers were injured as a result of the attack. It was reported that treatment for a worker whose jaw was broken and who was transferred to Trabzon Karadeniz Technical University Hospital was not provided after a treatment fee of 130,000 TL was demanded.
It was learned that the employer, M.Y., who was detained in connection with the attack, was released on judicial supervision by the magistrate’s court to which he was referred.
(06/063) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Custody in Istanbul…
It was leaned from news reports on June 9, 2026, that Fatoş Pınar Türker, General Manager of Medya A.Ş., who was arrested as part of an investigation targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, was subjected to a strip search while in custody.
In her defense during the court hearing on June 9, 2026, regarding the case in which she was being tried, Fatoş Pınar Türker stated the following regarding the torture and other ill-treatment she endured: “A female officer came. She said, ‘We’re going to search you’ (…) and took me to a room that looked like an archive room. ‘Undress,’ she said (…) She put on gloves (…) ‘Take off your top,’ she said. I took off my top (…) ‘Okay, you can put your top back on,’ she said. ‘Okay, can I go?’ I asked. ‘No,’ she said. ‘Take off your tracksuit bottoms too.’ I took them off. ‘Your underwear too.’ ‘What do you mean?’ I asked. ‘You’ll take them off,’ she said. So I pulled both of them down to my ankles. ‘Now squat down,’ she said. Then she said (…) ‘Expose your genitals.’ ‘Spread your legs, turn around, bend over…’

The final hearing in the case filed at the Ankara Civil Court of First Instance No. 40 against Özgür Özel, the elected Chairman of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and Member of Parliament for Manisa, based on his social media posts and following a complaint by Süleyman Soylu, a Member of Parliament for Istanbul from the Justice and Development Party (AKP), was held on June 9, 2026. The court ordered Özgür Özel to pay Süleyman Soylu 20,000 TL in moral damages.

The trial, which was initiated at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 72 regarding the CHP Istanbul Provincial Congress held on October 8, 2023, and involves 10 individuals—including Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat, Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney, and CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Özgür Çelik—resumed on June 9, 2026. The indictment seeks the prosecution of the 10 individuals for the crime of “violating the Political Parties Law.” The court adjourned the hearing until November 17, 2026.

The trial of musician Haluk Tolga İlhan, initiated at the Istanbul Anatolia Criminal Court of First Instance No. 38 on the grounds of his social media posts regarding the arrest and detention of the Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor, began on June 9, 2026. After hearing the defenses, the court announced its decision, acquitting Haluk Tolga İlhan of the charge of “publicly inciting a crime.”

It was leaned from news reports on June 9, 2026, that an investigation was launched against İzmir Bar Association President Sefa Yılmaz and members of the board of directors, citing their statements and activities regarding human rights violations that occurred during protests against the arrest and detention of the Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor on March 19, 2025.
(06/068) Journalist Threatened in Çorum…
It was learned from news reports on June 9, 2026, that Elvan Yılmaz, the owner of the Rota Çorum News Site, was threatened by the AKP Çorum Central District Chairman following a news story she published, with the chairman stating, “Why are you reporting against me? If I’m removed from office, will I let you walk the streets?”
